When my Grace's eye's were unevenly dilated I panicked. Many people told me, (including a trusted vet), that it is something that occurs in felv kitties and doesn't seem to cause any problems. Knocking himself silly is another story though. I'd be very interested to hear what else you come up with for the head shaking thing, (Spence is still shaking his head occasionally). i don't have real answers, but i know that one of my older girls had an eye-dilation problem that was gone by the time the vet got here--she had no signs or symptoms of anything else, and there hasn't been a recurrence. arh. I have him back on commerical CF. He seems really normal but his eye has been normal since that one day. When he eye was dilated, he did a lot of head shaking but I thought he as having trouble focusing. my vet said toxo but he was guessing said he didn't think doing blood work was worth it to put him down its one of those mistakes you make when your new I don't use that vet anymore

A head tilt and eye dilation means there's some kind of neurological problem, usually, though it CAN happen with severe untreated ear infections as well (more common in dogs than cats), and a few very rare conditions I'd have to do a search for. You'd want to do a full neurological exam to figure out the extent of the problem, and determine if it's affecting quality of life. Many times there's no quality of life lost, so I don't know why your vet would automatically euth on just that alone, maybe there was more you were not aware of at the time. Is he holding his head to the side, or falling over, or walking in any circles? It could be several things, or nothing. I've had two feleuk babies with this problem. Scared me to death the first time I saw it! I wouldn't be overly worried about it, FeLV+ kitties will sometimes have very strange pupillary behavior for no definitive reason. I think it's a good idea to have his ocular pressure checked at his next appointment because uveitis can cause high pressure. My Ninja had strange and uneven dilations of her pupils for a number of years and her ocular pressure was actually low.
