RE: Pippin tested negative on her IFA test--- plusquestionsaboutSpaying
I am so sorry that you had to lose so many babies so close in time, Belinda -- it's sort of similar to a long term impact of vaccines, the vet would never never admit or believe that our kitties got sicker due to the reaction of vaccine unless it give them an acute reaction. Similary, they would never even suggest that our cats got sicker due to the stress caused by vet visit or stay or neutering/spaying surgery unless they really KNOW cats how stressed they get by change of environment.. The idea of taking cats in right before the surgery of spaying and wait there and bring them home right after was actually personally suggested to me by Dr. Addie from University of Glasgow in Scotland as you know,, FIP is induced by stress- she is also the one who told me to wait spay/neuter as long as I can in animals who are less then 2 years old for the same reason.. I think Michelle on the list also does something similar when her kitty has to be anesthetized for whatever reason. I neutered Peter who I rescued in Fe right after I trapped him, and 6 months later he died of FIP -- and I know it's was from double stress from being a new environment and from neutering surgery -- I so regret that I did not wait to neuter him until he got more used to me and use to the new environment -- he was a perfectly healthy cat when I trapped him, I did all the blood work and nothing was wrong at all...and I feel responsible that I did not think more carefully about neutering surgery - -unfortunately,, unless something bad happens to your kitty, you really don't realize the impact of stress caused by spaying/neutering surgery also stay at the clinic..and underestimated the consequences. One way to tell sometimes how stressed a cat is is their glucose level goes up much higher than normal when they are at the vet as well as their BP -- but not always. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Belinda Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 8:46 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Pippin tested negative on her IFA test--- plusquestionsaboutSpaying I can only add that in January of 1993 I had to fly to Boston because my Dad was in the hospital dying, I had to board all 5 (4 positives, Teenye later turned negative and remained so for the rest of her life) of my guys at the vets because I was on a plane in 4 hours and didn't have time to make other arrangements. RE: Pippin tested negative on her IFA test --- plusquestionsaboutSpaying
I think lots of vets underestimate the impact of the stress to their bodies by them staying at the clinic -- I am not going to try to convince you all -- I just have to do what it has worked for my cats - being home makes them feel a lot faster, again you don't really know that impact of the stress from the surgery until later as any serious underlying disease will not start showing symptoms right away. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 4:22 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Pippin tested negative on her IFA test --- plusquestionsaboutSpaying My vet has a completely different procedure. When a cat goes in to be spayed or neutered (even dentals, anything they have to knock them out for), they stay for THREE days. Day one, you drop them off in the morning. They do not do anything to the cat except let it settle in and stop freaking out from being there. Morning of day two, they spay/neuter/dental the cat, and then the cat goes to ICU where it's closely monitored the rest of the day. Day three, the cat is fully awake, they recheck the cat, do another post surgery exam, check the incisions, etc, and then you can pick it up in the afternoon. The cost of the surgery includes the 3 days of hospital care, and pain meds. So, it's expensive, but I think they do an excellent job. Every cat I've had done there came out looking like a million bucks and bounced right back instantly. Tang had extremely invasive dental work done, and even he came home looking pretty good (I think he was in more pain before than after).
