Try Feliway spray and Rescue Remedy. The cat is very puzzled as to where he is
and why. No one explained this to him. He may be used to staying up at night
and have his days and nights confused. If this is so a vet may be able to give
the adopter some sort of tranquiller to help the cat get turned around.

  Hi all,

I adopted out a cat on Thursday night. The adopter called me today and said
he has been crying all night every night and she hasn't been able to sleep at
all. He is fine during the day, very affectionate, likes to give her kisses,
but he will not let her sleep. I need suggestions, or else this adopter will
return this cat. As he's a black cat, he is not going to have too many
options. She is not petting him when he is crying. He is eating and using the
litterbox. I don't know how to get this adopter past this. She's willing to
try things for a few more days, but I don't think much longer than that.

2007-03-18 Thread Nina

Kelley,
Just by your brief explanation it sounds like this guy is confused and
scared. Since he's affectionate during the day, and you hinted that
she's not giving him attention at night, I'm guessing he's calling out
for reassurance. Do you remember me telling the list about Sophie
Matilda? I had her confined to a bathroom because she's cat
aggressive. She cried day and night, (but it was worse at night), and
would only settle down when I was with her. This went on for what
seemed like years, but was really only days. I got very little sleep,
(sleeping on a bathroom floor is not so great for my aching back
either). The scariest and most upsetting part for me was wondering if
she would ever stop. She actually cried herself hoarse. Well, she did
settle down and start to feel safe and at home.

Give us more details. Is this kitty free to sleep with his new mom or
is she locking him out of her room at night? See if you can get the
adopter to give him more time. You know, set a time limit to see if
once he acclimates to his new surroundings and knows that he's home for
good he'll stop crying. If she'll give him just one more week, he may
be just fine. What's one week without sleep compared to the rest of
their lives together? Poor little guy, he deserves to have his human
give him this consideration, I hope that she does.

Nina,

he can sleep whereever he wants. She says he gets in bed with her for 20-30
minutes, then gets tired of that and gets out of bed and starts pacing and
crying and does that until 5 am.. It almost broke my heart.

She says she can't live without sleep forever, and I see her point. He
apparently stops crying about 5 am, and she gets to sleep for 2 hours.
That's not a good schedule for a working person. She works half a day on
Friday and took a nap after getting home. He allowed her to sleep then.
She says this weekend she has been sleeping from 5 am to 11 am, but she
cant' do that during the week.

Everyone isn't us, Nina. I wish they were, it would be so much easier. I
can't keep all these cats either - if I do I can't do rescue. Though I am
frustrated and aggravated right now and not wanting to do rescue at the
moment.

Also of course, Rescue Remedy, as someone mentioned.

Maybe she should try petting him and comforting him, if this seems like a
really distressed crying sort of thing. Is there dry food and water down at
night, so he knows he isn't going to go hungry? A bedtime snack could help too
-- canned food, a little shredded chicken or canned tuna, some kind of treat to
settle him for the night. Might be worth wearing him out a little earlier in
the evening -- one of those trackball toys or a laser light, throw in some
catnip.

He needs a little adjustment time, and some spoiling to welcome him to his
new home. Maybe a few days, with ear plugs for the adopter?

I have scads of elavil here, for nonlitter box users (I have way too many of
those). She doesn't want to go that route though. I have pill form,
liquid, and transdermal. I am about ready to go take some myself. Sigh. I
don't know why this is stressing me out so much, other than that I feel very
sorry for him.

I have some senior kitties here that would LOVE to be by themselves, but she
took a ferret home from the rescue zoo where she used to work. Basically
she took him home so he'd have somewhere to die. He lived about a year and
a half after she brought him hiome, and she doesnt' want to go through that
again.

We all know there is just no telling how long they will live, but
statistically a 1 year old cat is going to live a lot longer than a 12 year
old.

Hi Kelley,

Is this cat neutered? If not, could it have something
to do with that? Also, does the cat have the run of
the house at night? If so, maybe he needs a smaller
space, like just the bedroom with the door closed and
with his food and litter box in there until he feels
safe, for a few days or so. Maybe a towel from your
home that smells familiar will help also. I really
hope this works out for him, her, and you.

I have scads of elavil here, for nonlitter box users (I have way too
many of those). She doesn't want to go that route though. I have
pill form, liquid, and transdermal. I am about ready to go take
some myself. Sigh. I don't know why this is stressing me out so
much, other than that I feel very sorry for him.

I have some senior kitties here that would LOVE to be by themselves,
but she took a ferret home from the rescue zoo where she used to
work. Basically she took him home so he'd have somewhere to
die. He lived about a year and a half after she brought him hiome,
and she doesnt' want to go through that again.

We all know there is just no telling how long they will live, but
statistically a 1 year old cat is going to live a lot longer than a
12 year old.

Hi all,
I adopted out a cat on Thursday night. The adopter called me today
and said he has been crying all night every night and she hasn't
been able to sleep at all. He is fine during the day, very
affectionate, likes to give her kisses, but he will not let her
sleep. I need suggestions, or else this adopter will return this
cat. As he's a black cat, he is not going to have too many
options. She is not petting him when he is crying. He is eating
and using the litterbox. I don't know how to get this adopter past
this. She's willing to try things for a few more days, but I don't
think much longer than that.

Have her spray the bed with the Feliway spray. This is a very difficult time.
I've been there several times myself. Have her try giving him something
special to eat when it is sleeping time. I worked shifts that rotated every 28
days for a while. Ebony Thomas Katt--a 3 + year old feral--learned that when I
said goodnight he could jump on the bed, get something special, and was
supposed to nap until I got up. It is doable. Getting the patience to do it
is the trick.

  Nina,

he can sleep whereever he wants.

That's
not a good schedule for a working person. She works half a day on Friday and
took a nap after getting home. He allowed her to sleep then. She says this
weekend she has been sleeping from 5 am to 11 am, but she cant' do that during
the week.

Everyone isn't us, Nina. I wish they were, it would be so much easier. I
can't keep all these cats either - if I do I can't do rescue. Though I am
frustrated and aggravated right now and not wanting to do rescue at the moment.

settle down and start to feel safe and at home.

Re: OT - HELP, Cat crying all night long.

2007-03-18 Thread Susan Hoffman
When I first brought Scooter in a few years ago -- he was at that time around
10 months old, still a little on the feral side with most people, and FIV+ --
he drove me nuts for the first couple of nights. Around 3 or 4 am he would
start running from window to window crying and looking for a way out. I
eventually figured it out -- I always fed him and a few other stray and feral
cats on the front porch in the morning around 5:30 a.m. He knew it was almost
breakfast time and was trying to find a way to get out there so he wouldn't
miss a meal. Once he figured out that the real action was in the kitchen
around 5:15 a.m. he stopped worrying so much about the front porch.

You need to figure out what this cat is talking about, who he is calling or
what he thinks he's going to have to do without. He obviously likes the woman
who adopted him. If the food is better and more plentiful, the accomodations
comfy and the company good, he should be quite happy. So what does he think is
lost?

the light? Is he with her on the bed? Napping? Dozing? What happens
when she turns out the light? When she turns off her light, at that
point are ALL the lights in the house off?

But does he lie in bed with her while the light is on & she is still
basically up? When does he start pacing relative to her turning off the
light & going to sleep, or trying to?

He's suffering from separation anxiety. Even tho his person is there...when
she sleeps...she "leaves" him. Its not uncommon for animals who have suffered
a tramatic event (house burgler...fireabandonment) to go through
this..(sometimes just moving from one home to another can do it).

Has she tried the felaway (or the generic brand of it)? Spray it once a day
(at night) around the house to give a sense of well being.

She could also try a "Catnip" video...put in the tv and push play...kitty
might be destracted.

Worse case senerio...ask vet for a mild sediative until cat gets used to new
surroundings.

She is going to buy Feliway. I also found a local source of Rescue Remedy.
She is not willing to medicate him. I guess I can understand that (well,
not really, I have all kinds of cats on all kinds of meds) but it isn't a
physical problem, and I guess some people do not believe in medicating cats
to solve emotional problems.

She has not called me back. I have no idea what that means. Maybe he is
fine now. Maybe it was so bad she had to call in sick to work and she'll be
on my doorstep when I get home.

if she has to, for her own health and safety, she can always get earplugs
and shut him out of her room til he gets the message. not the best
option, perhaps, but sleep-deprivation isn't a good way to begin a
relationship, either.

Some people are just not good adopters. Anyone who adopts a new
cat, completely uproots it's routine, puts it in a new and unknown
environment, and takes it away from all it's known for the past however many
months it was with you, and then EXPECTS it to NOT cry at night isn't a good
adopter, IMO. Try finding a an adopter with a bit of a HEART and who might
actually CARE about the CAT'S feelings!

Geez... some people!

Now that I have read more of the topics... Whitey did this his first week
here... when I had him quarantined in the bathroom. As soon as he was able
to come into our room at night, he was happy. Of course, since then, we've
discovered he's a toe attacker, so he's now been booted out at night... it
hurts to wake up with bloody toes in the middle of the night! I think the
nighttime howling is a fairly common thing for cats that are totally in a
new place, it is their way of comforting themselves, I suppose. I realize
that sleep is essential, but I'm still of the opinion that it's not nice to
want to surrender the cat just because of the lack of sleep. God forbid this
person ever became a parent of a HUMAN baby, LOL! She'd kill herself, LOL!

yeah, that's me--keen powers of the obvious

seriously tho, i've always suspected that crying behavior in a new
environment is sort of like a sonar-thing, too the cat is trying to
locate themselves in time and space, and listening to hear where he is by
how his own voice bounces back defining their new boundaries, maybe?

and it makes sense in terms of older cats who get "lost" in their own houses
and cry and cry, too. (well, it makes sense to me.)

Give us more details. Is this kitty free to sleep with his new mom or
is she locking him out of her room at night? See if you can get the

once he acclimates to his new surroundings and knows that he's home for

be just fine. What's one week without sleep compared to the rest of

"Condition of her house"? Definitely get the cat back. Hope she never has a
child, or a husband or live-in boyfriend, or a houseguest who stays more than
two days. (If I was concerned about the condition of my house, I wouldn't let
myself live in it. Just rope everything off and look at it from afar.)

She says she can't live without sleep forever, and I see her point. He

not a good schedule for a working person. She works half a day on Friday and

Matilda? I had her confined to a bathroom because she's cat
aggressive. She cried day and night, (but it was worse at night), and
would only settle down when I was with her. This went on for what
seemed like years, but was really only days. I got very little sleep,
(sleeping on a bathroom floor is not so great for my aching back

she would ever stop. She actually cried herself hoarse. Well, she did
settle down and start to feel safe and at home.

Give us more details. Is this kitty free to sleep with his new mom or
is she locking him out of her room at night? See if you can get the
adopter to give him more time. You know, set a time limit to see if
once he acclimates to his new surroundings and knows that he's home for

be just fine. What's one week without sleep compared to the rest of
their lives together? Poor little guy, he deserves to have his human

i would MUCH rather have an adopter who recognized her limitations,
early on, and returned the cat that to NOT do so, and have the cat
stuck there, unloved and resented.

i gather this is a young woman, and this was her first critter on her
own--next time she'll have a much better idea of what's involved, and
be better able to decide whether she's cut out to be a cat parent. at
least obsidian will be returned to a safe place, and not tossed out
onto the street or into a kill shelter.

I don't think it has been a terrible experience. We have learned something
about Obsidian - he dislikes covered litter boxes and would probably be
better placed with a kitty friend. It was a week and a half, so should be
no more traumatic than being boarded.

The adopter has learned something about herself - and yes, she is a young
woman. She did have an elderly ferret previously who died after a long
illness. I've never had a ferret - perhaps they are less messy - I
certainly think they are smellier, cute though they are.

that's right, i'd forgotten about the ferret she'd lost--part of her

oh yeah... for sure! "Too concerned for the condition of her house" sounds
really bad. Perhaps you would like to consider using my home visit form and
doing pre-adoptive home visits? I have found that I can completely eliminate
those types of adopters by a good home visit with lots of questions (it
takes about 45 minutes to complete it when done right). I'd be happy to send
you a copy of the form if you want it.

MC is right of course, we should give the shallow woman some credit, at least
she is
responsibly returning the cat to the rescue and not just tossing him out on the

I have never had a cat that liked a covered box or scented litter. Mine also
use the 18 gallon or larger Rubbermaid (or knock off) boxes to give them more
kicking/scratching room. Obsidian may have the same preferences. I wish him
all the best luck in finding a new home--a forever home this time.

don't forget, too, that too many people buy the "cats are neat and
tidy" public-relations campaign line.. they may be neat and tidy
in their own personal hygiene, but can wreak total havoc on the
human's surroundings. as most of us have learned to our chagrin
and amazement. (who knew a cat could get UP that high, with no
climbing points)

Thanks, but I'm trying to get away from home visits altogether, although I
generally end up doing one informally anyway - I took Sapphire over to his
new mom's house for a "trial visit" to make sure he didn't freak out around
the kid or the (cat-friendly) dogs.

I'm practicing, as well as I can with the restrictions that are placed upon
me by the local animal control, what are known as "open adoptions."

More info about open adoptions can be found here:

No need to pray for them, they assure me they are much happier this way than
they would be being killed.

You know I always liked this list because it was a place to share freely
without being attacked.I value that and I'd hope it would continue.

Hi Kelley,
I was surprised at how forgiving and positive you sounded when this adoption
didn't work out. I just read your link to the Boulder Humane Society's open
adoption program and now
I understand. What a great approach! I know of many pet-worthy people in
our area who
have really been turned off by one of the local shelters. Wonder if it
would do any good
if I forwarded this link to them? H...

Matilda? I had her confined to a bathroom because she's cat

would only settle down when I was with her. This went on for what
seemed like years, but was really only days. I got very little sleep,

Give us more details. Is this kitty free to sleep with his new mom or
is she locking him out of her room at night? See if you can get the
adopter to give him more time. You know, set a time limit to see if
once he acclimates to his new surroundings and knows that he's home
for
good he'll stop crying. If she'll give him just one more week, he may
be just fine. What's one week without sleep compared to the rest of
their lives together? Poor little guy, he deserves to have his human
give him this consideration, I hope that she does.
