I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PERPHERIAL T CELL CANCER IN 2000, HAD 10 CATS, 4 WITH LEUKEMIA. TREATMENTS DID NOT WORK, BUT WENT INTO REMISSION 1 YEAR LATER. NEITHER THE CATS OR I SUFFERED. THE FELV CATS DIED OF OLD AGE AND AT 77 I AM STILL AROUND DESPITE DIABETES AND AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT. SO I WOULD SAY NEITHER DISEASE HURTS THE OTHER. Hi Bob - I use the BENE-BAC with a syringe - but you are probably correct with getting it under control with corticosteroids. I had a Japanese Bobtail MX, who had special problems and I had to do that with him off and on - before I knew about the pre/probiotics. Best of luck - I know you won't stop trying to give a quality of life to the best of your ability. Lots of cats - Sandy
Hi Sandy, You struck a cord with your story of dog-person to cat-person. I was a dog-person too, until a very special cat entered my life. I always tell people that say they don't like cats, that they just haven't had the opportunity to be loved by the right cat! Someone on another list just posted about how cats are associated more with energy and dogs more with the physical. That hadn't really occurred to me before. When I thought back to when cats began entering my life, it did coincide with the point in my life when satisfying my physical desires, (I used to be quite the party animal!), became less important to me than pursuing more spiritual quests. In answer to you question about cats being territorial, they are, but they are also very social. Much more social than most people who don't truly observe them give them credit for. It's amazing how dependent on each other they can become. It's especially true of feral colony interaction. I remember reading somewhere how cats get along better in large groups, (as long as they have enough personal space and their survival needs are being met). That there can be more friction in a household with two to four cats than in one with five or more. I don't know why five seems to be the magic number. There's generally a bit of hissing and posturing that goes on while they work out their status and hierarchy, but it does seem like they get to the point that they become more accommodating of new arrivals, when they just keep coming! Nina Dudes wrote: I'm always amazed when people say that they have lots of cats. I would probably have a lot more if my husband didn't stop me. I have always had dogs my entire life, until we were adopted by our first cat, Miss, some years ago. I remember the exact moment that I knew I loved her. I looked into her eyes as she sat in the crook of my arm purring, just staring at me with half closed eyes in contentment. I was amazed at how calming and peaceful a cat is. But on the other hand, I have 4 who are all indoors, and they barely get along. I can't imagine what would happen if we added more. Aren't cats notoriously territorial? I consider myself a cat novice, so I wonder what those of you with lots of cats observe about yours. Sandy
Re: To Sandy
Hey Sandy, Glad to hear that Cotton's diarrhea has cleared up. Sounds like he's doing well, thank goodness. I use Miticide (I think that's the name of it) on my kitties' ears if they get mites. You can get it at Walmart. It's really gooey and smothers the mites. I don't know if the mites will go away on their own or not. I am always very serious when I name my animals. I think that names are important. I watched Cricket as he was a kitten for several weeks before he got his name. He jumped on everything, and it dawned on me one day that he looked like a Cricket. He was black like your Cricket and had a beautiful, shiny medium length coat with a fluffy tail. His fur was so soft. I will miss petting him. He had gold eyes too, and around his pupils, he had a really lime green color. I've never seen a cat with eyes that green color before. It kind of was the color on the Christmas Cricket picture. Thank you for your condolences on Cricket. We buried him last night and it was a nice little service. I read a little thing I had written. We buried him with a copy of it and with his feather toy and with a little thing my nephew wrote on. We put a little marker on his grave. I wish I could remember where I've seen those kits where you can make stuff out of some type of clay. I'd like to make him a little headstone. I enjoyed reading about your baby Cricket. Maybe since you are in Houston, and I got my Cricket in Houston, Cricket and Cricket have the same father. You never know. I didn't know who the dad was; just the mom. These poor kitties. All of them fatherless. lol. Good luck with the new vet. If you talked with them on the phone and got a good feeling for them, you probably aren't far off the mark. Let us know how the visit goes. :) Wendy __ Start your day with Yahoo! - Make it your home page! http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

Re: To Sandy
Hi Wendy: First, I'm so sorry about you losing Cricket. I am also glad that you got to be there with him for the end. I have always loved the name Cricket, and meant to ask you why you named him that. I named my little sweet pea Cricket because she is so shiny and black, yet, in the bright sunlight, you can see very faint stripes of almost blue/black. Her eyes are huge pools of gold. She was so tiny when she was a kitten. And she has a tiny little chirp for a meow. She's still petite, but she jumps unexpectedly far when she pounces, and always has. It just seemed to fit her perfectly. Thank you so much for asking about my fuzzies. All are well. Cotton goes to the new vet on Saturday. His diarrhea has cleared up, as well as his ears. Do earmites just go away? I have been rereading the list and am trying to organize my thoughts to get the most out of this visit with the new vet. I have been anticipating it with ambivalence. I hope this is a good vet who will work with me. Additionally, the positive results you've just received could be positive simply because they were recently exposed. Many times a cat will test positive after exposure, but then clear the virus after a period of time. Especially this is true for healthy adult cats. Don't give up! tonya
