That's great. Thanks for the good news Tony. Sam Sam A. McCandless wrote: in case the list is gone when I get back. It won't be gone. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I found the 8 vs. 16 interesting and educational. Usually you can tell in the first three lines whether anyone has any actual information or not. Unlike most other forums, here even the arrogant flamers usually have some valid information to add. And there IS new ground to cover--recent new hardware like the Minolta 5400 and Epson 3200 give us a shot at a level of quality previously beyond most of our budgets, so there may well be new issues to discuss. I'll second this. It's clear that any adjustment to 8-bit data _must_ introduce quantization errors, and we haven't dealt with that as such yet. Inversely, my scans on my 14-bit scanner are a noisy mess, even slide film, so I'm willing to listen to arguments that 8-bits is more than enough (and that scanner Dmax claims are completely and totally insaneg). [snip] I can now see no way to rescue this list from terminal decline except moderated posting, or at least zero-tolerance moderation. I simply don't have the time or energy for either, even if I did want to play policeman, which I don't. It's been tedious lately, but I think it's worth keeping. All I can suggest is ignoring/deleting posts you can't be bothered with, or killfiling contributors. Unfortunately that won't leave much useful content, for all the reasons given. There are times I don't need much useful content! I am considering closing the list entirely, as filmscanning is now just another tool in the box. As such, the Prodig list, or various other lists or forums, may support better-balanced debate. I'm not sure how large a fraction of the subscribers value the debate function. I sometimes enjoy it, at least when the participants are in lecture mode and I learn something. When insults start to be traded, I start deleting the thread. Regards Tony Sleep - http://www.halftone.co.uk And mine to you, Tony. I have to go away for ten days or two weeks and wanted to say thanks now, both to you and to others on the list who've helped me, in case the list is gone when I get back. -- Sam Unsubscribe by mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED], with 'unsubscribe filmscanners' or 'unsubscribe filmscanners_digest' (as appropriate) in the message title or body

Tony Sleep wrote: [about complaints, adverse signal/noise ratio, members running away screaming, gene pool shrinking, incest setting in...] I suspect the the original motivation for the list, the exploration of what was new territory 5yrs ago, is now obsolete. Film scanning is now sufficiently familiar, current hardware and software is now competent enough to have run out of big questions. All that's left is nit-picking angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin stuff, interspersed by axe-grinding. I agree the subject has lost its piquancy, and for those reasons. This is undoubtedly my lazy-arsed fault, or at least my responsibility. I no longer provide the stimulus of review material since the effort was wrecking my precarious freelance livelihood. I seldom contribute, since I'm bored with answering questions that have come up 20 times before and usually progress to a spiral of nit-picking vituperation. I haven't even shot any film for 6months. Scanning old film is something I am going to be doing for some years yet, but new material is easier and better produced on digital camera. E6 is already ebbing. Apart from a dwindling pool of film diehards and archivists, this is how it is going to be for most. Hey Tony, don't carry that guilt! You don't owe anything to the list, we all owe you! [moderation, ignoring, killfiling...] I am considering closing the list entirely, as filmscanning is now just another tool in the box. As such, the Prodig list, or various other lists or forums, may support better-balanced debate. If you do shut down the list I won't blame you. What you've done for me -- through your scanner reviews and this list -- has been terrific. Thanks for doing it! Tony, With all the respect for all the positions , I couldn't pass without a comment on your post: 1) Tony, you did and are still doing an extraordinary work. 2) I completely aggree with your analysis (except, of course, that it is your fault). 3) The fault is from all the list members (me included) and it is not a fault -- all we are humans and I never met a person (including me in the mirror, MY mirror :-)) without qualities and defects. 4) I much appeciate your no policeman attitude. 5) I couldn't pass without stressing that the big, big part of what I know about filmscanning and related and sometimes not so related but very useful aspects came from your site (the first I studied) and from this list, that helped me to choose my scanner, to overcome the initial problems and here and there during the last years. It was there that I learned what to search and study in other sites and books. 6) It is a fact that there is less to say about filmscanning, as it happens with the evolution of all the technologies (CD-R, for instance). 7) I will respect and understand whatever you will decide. Speaking for me, I still search everyday the posts, I read some and don't read the others. 8) Even if you decide to close the list (and I hope that you do not do it yet), the list and you will remain in our hearts, I am sure. Finally, my first purpose is to put a very loud interference in the signal-to-noise ratio :-)that makes you feel VERY VERY PROUD for all you have done (and you are still doing, and I hope you will go on doing) for the list and for all of us. Warmest regards for all the list menbers and specially to you. Well said, Mario. I am sure you speak for the grateful majority. Whether just lurkers and learners or active participants we are all in Tony's debt for his time and patience in keeping this list going for so long.
