Ya know, Hal is right. But I've tried this as well, and while it does work,
and it is quick and easy, I've had files that something had gone very wrong
further on down in the measures that cost me countless hours of editing
since I didn't notice it until much later. It could have been operator
error, but I could never track it. And this hasn't been an isolated
incident with only one file. That option is the 'too many beats' dialog box
makes me nervous. That being said, the same could happen even when you use
my suggestion. Be careful out there.

BTW, speaking of the 'too many beats' dialog box, how many other users out
there truly miss the Cancel button in this dialog. I curse Finale virtually
every day on this one.

I trust the "Keep moving ..." option much more more than any thing
involving "partial measures," although the latter seem to be
considerably improved in 2004 and 2005. Selecting "Partial Measures"
was a sure bet to unknowingly mess up the end of your score a few
versions back. This question came from a user with 2000c, so I would
not suggest partial measures at all. I use "Keep moving ... " often and
have no problems.

[Finale] ties

2004-09-18 Thread Bob Florence
Hi All:
How do I put a tie end at the beginning of a line when the key

I know that you can put a tie end in place by clicking on a note with

What happens if you work on those notes in scroll view, with a tie
between the final note of the previous system and the note in question?
Seems to me it should tie just fine across systems.

Bob,

There may be a way to do this that someone else knows, but I have not had success using the tie tool when something like a key change gets in the way. Instead, when the tie tool does not work for a backwards tie end, I simply draw one with the slur tool. It's not the most elegant solution but, if you draw carefully, you cannot tell much difference.

One other possibility: you may have too small a setting for Document Options/Ties - system break start. If this is too small, the tie end will not extend far enough backwards over the preceding bar line. I use at least a -48 setting here.

Perhaps this needs to be sent to Finale Support, as it appears in the

Hi Bob,
You have to go to the measure tool, select all measures in the
document (command A) and then double click on the staff with all
measures selected (you can also go to the measure drop down menu and
select edit measure attributes). Make sure that in the window that

You should make sure that your template is set this way too. I think
for some reason in your template the left barline setting is set to

Hope this helps and that you are having a good weekend!

[Finale] OT: Printer question

2004-09-18 Thread Michael L. Meyer
Title: OT: Printer question

Hello all --

I’ve read some of the printer discussions in the past, and thought I might run this question by you all.  Does anyone have/what do you think of the HP Deskjet 9650?  I’m looking for a printer that gives as close to laser-quality output as possible (but I by no means do anything that requires archival-quality or publishable stuff) and will print on large-size paper (at least 11x17, although the 9650 brochure says it goes up to 13x19).  At the same time, this printer is for use in our home, and my wife and I would like to be able to print out digital photos on it as well.

The HP Deskjet 9650 seems to fulfill both of those needs, and I usually see it on sale for $250 or $300 at the local OfficeMax or Staples.  Are there any alarms I should know about, for those of you who have used it?  Does anyone have a better product in mind in a similar price range ($350 at the absolute upper-most limit)?

Thanks in advance for anyone’s suggestions.

Re: [Finale] Public Domain Music

2004-09-18 Thread Andrew Stiller
On Sep 17, 2004, at 3:00 PM, John Howell wrote:
I wonder how hard it would have been to win a court case based on
English common-law traditions. I do know that the Library of Congress
has a very interesting list of publications that DID lose their
copyright protection instrantly and permanently because they were
published without the copyright notice required by the 1909 law. One
of those publications was the 1928 edition of the Oxford Book of
Carols.

Common-law copyright was admittedly mostly of value for unpublished
works, but the protection it offered was very real. Under the 1909
law, a work was not statutorily protected unless it not only bore a
properly formulated copyright notice, but had been formally registered
with the Library of Congress. Composers, especially young ones, being
as impecunious as they are, the required fee presented a real
disincentive to register, and beginners were routinely advised that
they need not do so as long as all MS copies remained under their
control and were clearly labeled as to their ownership. The common-law
basis of this was that the physical MS was the composer's property,
just like a chair or a table, and copying from the MS w.o permission
constituted a form of theft--rather like joyriding in someone's car.
For the absolute top level of protection in this form, one was advised
to mail a copy of the piece to oneself, leaving the envelope unopened
upon its arrival; the postmark would constitute proof positive that the
work was in your possession on that date, and anyone claiming later
ownership would have no case.

When the 1978 law did away with common-law copyright protection, the
principle that a work need not be registered in order to be protected
was incorporated into the new statute.

I was thinking last night that under the old common-law protections, a
song need not even have an author credit under certain circumstances:

"This song was made
By Billy Gashade
As soon as the news did arrive.
He said there was no man
With the law in his hand
Who could take Jesse James when alive."
Pretty clear evidence of both authorship and date of composition, I'd
say!

I recently picked one up at Office Despot, mostly for use doing maps,
but have found it very nice for music. Went to Kelly Paper and picked
up some 12x18 28# stock, and the parts have come out very nice at
default resolution. I haven't played any gigs with those parts in a
moist environment, though, and so can't guarantee results there. But
the parts are very clean and crisp, and they print out very quickly.

I do recall, though, seeing a review in PC World saying the ink price
per page was a bit high - but for printers that handle paper that large
that's pretty much a given.

I’ve always had difficulty cutting measures out of a score. But a quick and easy workaround I use is to in scroll view, make a new staff at the bottom (I usually leave it in treble clef, since I’m going to delete it in about two minutes anyway,) copy the notes I need with select partial measures enabled, copy them down to the new staff, clear the measures out of the original staff, move the notes from the new staff to where they should be in the original staff, and then delete the new staff. It sounds like a lot more than it really is.
But that’s just me, I’ve never been able to successfully cut measures out of a score.

Re: [Finale] OT: Printer question

2004-09-18 Thread Richard Walsh
The trade-offs are as follows:

The output on the inkjet is slower than toner based systems. but is capable of looking really good, depending on the paper you use. Glossy paper works best, but may not be firm enough to support its own weight on a conductor stand so you have to experiment a bit.

The output is somewhat water soluble (keep it away from the trombone players)

The product is more expensive per page IF you amortize it over the period of thousands of pages. Maybe you need less than this. If the answer is yes, then it is a good deal. It is all relative to your personal requirements.

When the cost of the printer is about a tenth of the cost of toner based printers, all these factors must be considered. I have several large format inkjet printers as well as an HP 5100 and I use whatever is better suited.
