[Finale] FinWin 2k3 - problem in 2nd ending creation

2005-01-26 Thread themark
I have a problem creating 2nd endings on bars that have the first note tied
to the last note of the bar before the first ending. Using ctrl++ on the
keyboard I should be able to create a tie that goes backward but the most
of times this does not work and I have to create a tie manually.
What is the exact order of actions in making this 2nd ending?
I mean:
1) I put notes in the bar that will start 2md ending then create the second
ending then do the ctrl+ action
2) I create the 2nd ending then put notes in the bar then ctrl+

or other?
Both of these actions don't work.
Thanks for hints.

Hi Gary,
I saw this today:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/01/21/native/index.php
Also announced was Kontakt 2, Native Instruments' latest-generation
sampler software. Kontakt 2 features a new sampling engine with
unlimited polyphony and 64-part multi-timbrality; support for
multiprocessor configurations and optimizations for G4 and G5
processors;
Just what we've been asking for! Will there be a Kontakt 2-based
player for GPO?
Cheers,

PS I got my mini today, and after some fiddling, got my 1 GB of RAM
installed. It gets an Xbench score of 123.29 (where 100.00 is a dual
800 Ghz G4). My old beige FrankenMac got a score of 58.16. I haven't
installed GPO on it yet, but I'm certain the results will be much
improved. (Perhaps, with the G4 optimizations in Kontakt 2, the
results will be even better!)

Yes, I can see that. Obviously I am more used to thinking in terms

[Finale] OT: GPO alternatives

2005-01-26 Thread Randolph Peters
Many Finale users seem to be interested in Garrison Personal
Orchestra. The Mac version does not perform as well as one might
hope, at least for the time being. Here is another alternative to
consider. This is from two Namm press releases put out by MOTU.

-Randolph Peters
*
MOTU Symphonic Instrument unveiled at NAMM 2005
Tuesday, January 25, 2005 @ 8:45pm
MOTU has launched its Symphonic Instrument, a $300 cross-platform
instrument plug-in that gives users quick and easy access to a 8GB
library of quality orchestra sounds for composing, sequencing and
rendering realistic orchestral performances. It can be used with any
compatible host application (VST, Audio Units, DXi, MAS and RTAS),
where users can load up to sixteen different instruments per instance
of the plug-in. Built-in convolution reverb allows users to place
their ensemble in authentic acoustic spaces, from orchestra sound
stages to renowned concert halls to majestic cathedrals. It offers
easy-to-use controls to allow further adjustment of each instrument;
sounds can also be directly loaded into MOTU's MachFive universal
sampler plug-in for more advanced layering and programming.
**

MOTU debuts major upgrades to MachFive, MX4 at NAMM
Wednesday, January 26, 2005 @ 8:55am
MOTU last week unveiled version 2.0 of its instrument plug-ins,
MachFive and MX4. MachFive Version 2, MOTU's universal sampler
plug-in, will include unlimited parts per instance, a full-screen
preset browser, a new modular synthesis architecture, keygroup
layering with rule-based switching, larger sample and keygroup
editors, a complete built-in mixer, LoopLab groove slice engine,
sample time-stretching, and many other new features. Meanwhile, MX4
Version 2, MOTU's hybrid synth plug-in, will add more effects, more
presets, a built-in pattern gate, a built-in arpeggiator and numerous
additional modulation sources and shapers. MachFive v2 will ship in
the second quarter for $400 (upgrade cost not announced), while MX4
v2 will ship the first quarter of 2005 as a free upgrade to version 1
or for $300 (full license).

The company offered a peak at some of the new features of MachFive
Version 2, but said that more features would be revealed at a later
date:

* Stand-alone operation- In addition to supporting all major
plug-in formats on Mac and Windows, MachFive Version 2 operates as a
stand-alone application, allowing it to be used with popular music
applications such as Finale that don't host audio plug-ins. Users can
also build Mac- or PC-based systems designed solely for large-scale
sample playback via MachFive as the software front end for the system.

* Unlimited parts- Currently, MachFive Version 1 provides 16
parts. Each part can be loaded with a different instrument (preset)
for independent sequencing on up to 16 different MIDI channels per
instance of the plug-in. In Version 2, MachFive lets users add
unlimited parts to one instance of MachFive, eliminating the need to
open multiple instances when more than 16 parts are needed. The
stand-alone version of MachFive can receive on an unlimited number of
MIDI channels, while the plug-in version supports up to 128 separate
MIDI channels per instance.

* Full-screen preset browser- As just one example of its entirely
new graphics engine, MachFive Version 2's new preset browser fills
the entire window with a semi-transparent, multi-column list for
browsing soundbanks, preset categories and presets, making it much
easier for users to find sounds.

* Unlimited keygroup layers - In MachFive Version 1, samples can
be conveniently and flexibly mapped as keygroups across the entire
128 MIDI note range and 0-127 velocity depth. MachFive Version 2 adds
a third dimension, allowing users to stack unlimited layers of
keygroups in one preset. Think of Version 1 as providing only one
layer per preset. Now users can build multiple layers per preset and
use sophisticated rules for switching between layers in real-time.
For example, a user could load various articulations of an instrument
into several layers and use key switches to instantly change
articulations (layers). Or they could use a modulation wheel to
smoothly crossfade among several articulations (layers).

* Enhanced Giga and EXS24 library support- The just-mentioned
layering feature allows MachFive Version 2 to provide much better
support for the use of sample libraries in the Giga and EXS24 sample
formats.

* Expanded modular synth engine- Under the hood, MachFive has a
newly expanded, modularized synthesis engine that provides a host of
new features. Two aggressive filters are supplied per keygroup, as
are more LFO waveforms, pitch processing, time stretching, tempo
synced multi-stage envelopes with unlimited stages and streamlined
performance. Every synth

[Finale] Dual display on Mac mini

2005-01-26 Thread Darcy James Argue
I'm sorry to say that this cable, from Pacific Cable:
http://www.pacificcable.com/Picture_Page.asp?DataName=DVIIY-1
... doesn't do the trick at all.
First off, it only seems to feed one display at a time. Second, image
quality on the VGA end is *horrible*, with an insane amount of ghosting
and distortion.

I was told disabling Pin #12 on my VGA extension cable might help, so I
clipped it off, but that didn't make any difference at all.

After much tweaking, etc., I did figure out how to switch between one
monitor and the other using the Displays preference pane -- bizarrely,
setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz activates the DVI display, and
setting it to 75 Hz switches to the VGA display. I might even have
kept the cable just for that functionality (better than constantly
plugging and unplugging), if the VGA image quality weren't so screwed
up.

Keep in mind, I was only trying to get *mirrored* displays -- not even
extended desktop -- but even that doesn't seem possible, at least not
with this particular cable. It looks for the time being like I'll be
resorting to plugging whichever monitor I happen to need at the moment
-- the one at my desk or the one above my keyboard.

You would, I guarantee it. And not only for writing, but
for

it's a

John

And don't forget the extra benefit of gaining fluency in all the

clefs -- transposition at sight becomes a breeze. IMO, this should

still be a part of every musician's training.
Yes, and Boulenger was still teaching them, according to one of her

students. And don't forget, we're not talking just about orchestral

clefs, but the full system of 9 movable clefs: G clef on the 1st or

2nd line; C clef on the first, second, third, or 4th line; F clefs on

the 3rd, 4th or 5th line. You need to know the whole system to use

it for instant transposition. I write for horn seldom enough that
it
really helps to think of it as being in mezzo-soprano clef, concert C

on the second line.
John
I can't remember not knowing how to read the grand staff, but C clefs
still give me more trouble than they should. I remember, from
scoring my symphony for brass, that a tenor clef trombone and a Bb
trumpet playing an octave higher use the same lines and spaces.
There are other tricks too, I bet.
Is the Morris and Ferguson book Preparatory Exercises in Score

master different clefs. Hope I'm not showing my age...

How he handled the tenor clef places I didn't even ask!! It was a

make the tie go backwards. Try alt-T, which should be the same.

I have a problem creating 2nd endings on bars that have the first note

ctrl++ on the keyboard I should be able to create a tie that goes
backward but the most of times this does not work and I have to
create a tie manually.
What is the exact order of actions in making this 2nd ending?
I mean:
1) I put notes in the bar that will start 2md ending then create the
second ending then do the ctrl+ action
2) I create the 2nd ending then put notes in the bar then ctrl+

or other?
Both of these actions don't work.
Thanks for hints.

I enter the notes, create the ending, then go back using the Speedy Tool
to put in the backwards tie, and everything works, but I am in FinMac

Christopher
On Windows machines it is ctrl and = to create a backward tie.

Thanks for replies

At least one made it through and by now you should have read Christopher
Smith's reply to you, as well as my clarification of his post.

Well, I don't want to put any pressure to the admin, but Mailman2 does
give you search API on the archive interface. It's not a built-in option
so you need Python. I couldn't do it myself so I asked someone to do it
for Mobile I/O user list I admin.

Re: [Finale] Old Finale files

2005-01-26 Thread Jerry W. Kortge
Dig out your old 68k based Mac, network it to your OX9 based machine. Read
the files on the 68k based machine and transfer the files via the network
to the new machine. Don't know once there in the OS9 machine if your
current version of Finale can open them but it's worth a try. That's my
$.02 worth. Good luck.
Regards.Jerry

Well, I am finally am getting around to updating all my old music
files. Most seem to be fine but I have a few that won't read at all.
I dug up all my old Finale program disks -- all the way back to Finale
1.2! Remember the Holiday Disk? I even have that. Unfortunately they
are unreadable in System 9. Anybody have any suggestions on what I
could do?

Thanks in advance

Jerry

But I find this constant tracking and publishing of all our words

I gather you don't spend much time on the Usenet then? To me, having
all our messages on file archived and tallied somewhere just seems
normal, whether I like it or not.

For what it's worth, I guess my preference would be that the Finale
List archives remain google-able, but it's only a slight preference.
It's not something that I care about enough to lobby for.
