[Finale] Staff Styles wishlist

2007-12-17 Thread Randolph Peters
It would be great if there could be a Staff Style that would
automatically place tuplets above the music. This would take care of
the majority of tuplets in vocal parts. I know you can change the
tuplets in one pass using what used to be called Mass Mover, but
still, this would be useful.

And while we are at it, why not another Staff Style option that would
take auto-positioned dynamics (usually below the staff) and give them
an override setting so that the dynamics could automatically go above
the staff? This would save having to make duplicate sets of dynamics.

Re: [Finale] O.T. Violin d'amore or violin d'amore

2007-12-17 Thread John Howell

list know more about them?

The New Grove article on "viola d'amore" points out that the tuning
was a variable, and it's possible that someone may have tuned it with
the top string on e'' (which would be only a step higher than the
more standard d''). There is no article under "violin d'amore." And
it's a fact that most of the 18th century instruments "d'amore" were
pitched below their treble counterparts, a minor third below for the
flute d'amore and oboe d'amore.

However, within the limits of the fingerboard of a specific
instrument, there is no physical reason why a viola d'amore in a
slightly lower tuning could not be used in the upper positions on the
top string. What is the actual range of the part?

The article also mentions that both Bach and Graupner usually notated
the music at sounding pitch, rather than in the scordatura used by
other composers (which was actually a kind of tablature telling the
player where to finger in the specified tuning, but not what note
would sound). It mentions that Graupner used the instrument in 9
concertos, 12 overtures, one sinfonia, 6 trio sonatas, and 14
cantatas. He certainly knew the instrument's capabilities, as well
as those of his player(s).

I know that you have come across other works in which Graupner seems
to switch octaves rather freely in the scores, but I don't know
whether that explanation would work in this case. If you could
provide the range called for (and the key of the movements in which
it is used) off list, I'd be happy to pass the question on to the
ViolaList, where there is at least one viola d'amore expert and
player.

Assuming you've used the Setup Wizard's drumset, then do this.

In Layer Options, set Layer 3 to always stems up, always ties
flipped, shift rests by 6 steps, and for these options to apply even
if there is nothing in other layers.

In Layer 3 enter the cues as G treble clef above the staff.

Once everything is in, choose Show Active Layer Only (so that this
next step won't affect notes in other layers), select the entire drum
staff in Mass Edit by clicking the drum clef, and Change... Note
Size... to 75% to make them cue sized.

You may have to edit Slash Notation staff style so that items in
other layers and items ATTACHED to other layers show. If you don't do
this, then your cues in layer 3 will disappear when you apply slash
notation to Layer 1.

Done.

The only drawback is that the G is mapped to the open cuica sound by
default, so unless you change this to a crash cymbal or something
manually, you will get playback that sounds like a seal barking.

I use Layer 3 because I might be using Layer 2 for choir or piano
parts, and Layer 4 I use for cues under the staff (D in treble clef)
so that they don't interfere with chord symbols in piano/guitar
parts, set to stems down etc.

On Jari Williamson's site there is a method for quickly changing a
trumpet melody into a drum cue, but I use Layer 3, not layer 2.

Re: [Finale] cues in drum parts

2007-12-17 Thread Darcy James Argue
1) Layer options -- Layer 4 -- stems & ties up, rests up 6 steps,
playback off.

2) Select the line you want to cue -- say, the lead trumpet line --
and move it to Layer 4.

3) Go Document -> Show Active Layer Only and switch to Layer 4.

4) Copy the notes to the drum part. Use a filter to exclude whatever
you want excluded from the drum part (e.g., slurs, hairpins, etc).

5) Select the passage that you have copied to the drum staff, and go
Plugins -> Note, Beam and Rest Editing -> Single Pitch. Choose G5 as
your pitch.

6) if the selected notes don't appear on the top staff space, you're
probably using a percussion map. You will need to edit the perc. map
so that the pitch G5 shows up on the top staff space. (Consult the
documentation for details on this.)

7) Turn off "Show Active Layer Only.

8) Create a new Staff Style called "Slash Notation (Show Notes)." Its
settings should be identical to regular slash notation except you also
want to turn on "Show Notes in Other Layers."

9) Apply this new staff style to the drum part. You now have slashes
with ens. kicks above the staff.

10) Move the notes of the lead trumpet line (or whatever your source
staff was) back to Layer 1.

10) Write to MakeMusic and tell them that they need to make this
process easier.

Cheers,

[Finale] 2003->05 MM fonts not showing onscreen (PC)

2007-12-17 Thread shirling & neueweise

hi, was helping a client on PC with an update and all MM fonts cannot
be "read" by his system anymore, or rather they cannot be seen
onscreen. i think it was 2003 where the font names were changed and
imagine this may have something to do with it, but i remember on mac
the old fonts were just dumped to the trash (and not deleted
entirely) and you could recover them if you needed to. on the PC
they are goone.

when we first installed there was a problem installing Maestro, but
clicking on "give 'er another go, mate" we were able to continue.

doing a data check check system-programme fonts didn't solve
anything, maestro, engraver et al came up in the list, but the fonts
were not greyed out in the list, so they seem to be there. tried to
edit the FAN file, although i couldn't see what that would change...
but now i know: nothing.

re-installed only the fonts from the 2005 CD, still the same problem;
de-installed 2005, nothing changed; de-installled and re-installed
2003 and ops, problem is still there! music fonts from other
sources appear fine (eg. sib's inkpen and opus) when i change the
notehead font or other.

i don't know PC much, so if someone can give me instructions about
what has to be installed in which folder/place to resolve this, i
would be grateful.

the client doesn't know much about computers more than clicking on
the setup .exe file installs the programme, so can't really help.

cheers,
jef

Re: [Finale] L.V. with Smart Shape

2007-12-17 Thread Robert Patterson
Controlling the shape of smart shape slurs in the various spacing
contexts of score/part and scroll/page views has always been a great
deal of trouble for me. Instead, for L.V. I use shape expressions that
are set not to expand or contract with spacing. You have the same
level of control as will Smart Shapes, but they never change shape no
matter which view you are in.

When I want L.V., I like to use Smart Shape Slur so I have full control
how it looks. The shape can be very psychological to me. As the nature
of L.V., the following object is a rest, which seems to cause a problem.

However, it must be a bug that the slur becomes lng flat line when
you flip it, is it not? I am on Mac 2008a but it has been like this for
a long time. I assume there must be a better?
