I met George at a famous Third Stream concert at Brandies in June of
1957 and worked with his sextet in New York and on tour in 1960 after
a couple of weeks of rehearsals at the Lenox School of Jazz. Who knew
then that those would turn out to have been the good old days. Sorry
to hear of his passing.

[Finale] jazz articulations

2009-07-28 Thread toronado455
I need help with choosing two articulations (this is using the Jazz
font) for a trumpet solo transcription.

The first is a slight bend down. I don't want it to look like a fall
off. I chose symbol #71, but I'm not sure if that's the best choice.

The second is a quick bend down and back up on a quarter note. I'm
guessing that is what symbol #38 is for. But not quite sure where to
place the articulation. If I place it after the note, it looks too much
like a tie. So I'm thinking maybe it should be placed centered directly
over the notehead.

Sorry, I know these are more notation questions than Finale questions. :-)

[Finale] staff list doesn't work

2009-07-28 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr .
This happens all the time, and I could never figure out what is wrong. I have a
score for 4 instruments: cavaquinho, guitar, bass and piano, in that order. I
want the S (segno) and coda signs to appear only at the top instrument and top
piano staff, in the score, and in all parts. So I mark, in the staff list:
Cavaquinho and top piano staff under score; and all but the lower piano staff
under parts. I get an unexpected result. The signs appear on every staff of
the score. Am I forgeting something?

[Finale] Separating layers for printing

2009-07-28 Thread Michael Greensill
How do you guys deal with printing parts that are in layers e.g. Horn
1 and 2 are on the same stave in the score, Horn 1 in layer 1 and Horn
2 in layer 2, but I want separate parts for each.

I understand the use of show current layer only in actually
separating them for printing, but the problem comes with naming the
part. It still says Horn 1 and 2 and I want it to just say Horn 1.

If one renames it on the part the whole damned score becomes Horn 1.

Is there a plug-in for this that I'm missing somewhere?

Hide the actual part name on the part and put a text block
which you can edit to show the correct part name for whether
it's Horn 1 or Horn 2. Then be sure to set things so that
the text block is hidden in the score.

Dear Darcy

I think, after an amazing amount of fruitless searching, that I've
found the passage you're pointing me to. It comes under the heading,
Voicing for Staff in Part, not easy to find when you think that your
searching for something along the lines of...dividing/separating
voices into two staves.

The only problem is that it seems to have been written in some strange
language :)

Anyway, I can't seem to understand what they're trying to get me to
do, here's the passage that has me stumped

To divide a multi-part score staff into two or more parts, first add
the staff to different parts. Once the multi-part staff appears in two
(or more) parts, use this dialog box to specify which notes to show
for each part.

What does it mean when it says, add the staff to different parts.
What different parts?

I don't mean to be facetious but they don't make this easy.

[Finale] Possible to scan Real Book to transpose chart to new key?

2009-07-28 Thread Lylex Ryan
Hello all,

I've been quietly paying maintenance fees on Finale for years, without having
found the time to get over the learning curve.  One of these days

Is it possible to use Finale to scan a chart out of the Real Book, then
generate a new chart in a different key?

I'd expect to do some touch-up of the scanned chart, so not expecting it to be
perfect.  And I'm guessing the different fonts used in the different fake books
would contribute to the scanning success.  I suppose I could just learn Finale
(finally) and re-enter the chart by hand, then transpose, but I was looking for
an easy way out.  The singer in our group is asking for other keys on Standards.

And by the way, is there a way to search the archive for this list?

ThanksLyle

Mike,

In re your question

How do you guys deal with printing parts that are in layers e.g. Horn
1 and 2 are on the same stave in the score, Horn 1 in layer 1 and Horn
2 in layer 2, but I want separate parts for each.

I understand the use of show current layer only in actually
separating them for printing, but the problem comes with naming the
part. It still says Horn 1 and 2 and I want it to just say Horn 1.

If one renames it on the part the whole damned score becomes Horn 1.

What I'd do is select show active layer, and rename the part the way I
wanted it (Horn 1), print the part, change the name to the name for the
other part (Horn 2), and change the active layer and print the other
part, and then, depending upon whether there were other changes I wanted
to save or not, I'd either revert the name changes, or close the score
without saving the file.

Re: [Finale] staff list doesn't work

2009-07-28 Thread Florence + Michael
Strange: I don't know what's causing this. My S and Coda signs only
appear on the staves I've defined in the staff list. A handle shows
up on each staff, but only the handles on the chosen staves have a
sign attached to them.

Stupid things to check:

1: In the Text Repeat Assignment dialog, is the sign set to use the
correct staff list?
2: Is the staff list correctly defined? There should be an X (for
show) or an F (for force, to force the sign to appear even on
staves which have been set not to show text repeats) by the staves
where the sign should appear, and nothing at all by the staves where
it should not appear.

I can't think of anything else for the moment.

Yes, I have only Xs. Under parts I put X for all instruments. Under score I
put an X only for the 2 staves I wanted, but the signs show on all 5 staves
when looking at the score. This is how I had it set the last time I opened the
score. HOWEVER, I just tried to open the score now, and got this message from
the finder: While attempting to open the file Nação.mus the File Manager
reported an error. -39 Restarted the computer, no use...

The file won't open. It may be corrupted. Now I'm afraid, since this problem
has happened before, with other files, to loose those also. These are probably
files from older versions that I've saved as something else in newer versions.

Thanks
