[Finale] Expression organization

2010-08-01 Thread Don Hart
Hi all,

If you don't mind sharing, I would like to know the various ways list
members organize expressions into categories. Have any of you added
new categories to the ones Finale provided? I like the flexibility in
this area but don't think I've hit my stride as far as efficiency
goes. I'm setting up a new template so now would be a great time to
hear what's working well for others.

A couple of related questions about category staff lists (some have
'em, some don't): Is there a way to get a new expression category
with (or without) staff list capabilities besides through duplication?
Is there a way to turn on/off the staff list feature for a given
category?

I'm currently using '09 on a mac but please let me know if 2011
changes anything along these lines.

Thanks much,

Don Hart

It also depends on what register it's in...but overall it should be somewhat
feasible.

Subject: [Finale] Cl question

Are repeated 16th notes (five in a row), tongued stacatto, feasible
for B-flat Cl. players at a quarter note = about 124? This in medium
to upper medium range ...

Thanks for your wisdom in advance ...

Re: [Finale] Expression organization

2010-08-01 Thread Mark D Lew
I did a big upgrade from v04 to v10 earlier this year, so adapting to
the new expressions is pretty fresh in my memory.

Caveat: I doubt I'm a typical user. I've found that in general I'm
more detail-oriented than most here, and I tend to be a bit of a
control freak.

If you don't mind sharing, I would like to know the various ways list
members organize expressions into categories. Have any of you added
new categories to the ones Finale provided?

ALL of the expressions I used are in new categories. I didn't like
Finale's definitions in their default categories*, and I was having
difficulty editing them. At the time it seemed like there were some
things that were hard-coded and couldn't be changed. I'm not sure if
that's actually true or I just couldn't find the right dialog box.

(*Is it just me or do Finale defaults have an awful lot of
definitions that are, um, eccentric? In general, MakeMusic's template
style choices always seem so weird to me.)

In any case, I only wanted to use expressions that I myself had
explicitly defined, but I also found it useful at first to keep
Finale's default ones around for reference, so I made my own
categories for my own expressions and I only use those.

I have four categories: tempos, dynamics, generic expressions, and
rehearsal numbers. For me category are purely typographic
definitions, regardless of musical meaning, so for example "dynamics"
is anything I'd put in the music font at that size, like a pedal mark
or luftpause. Expressions default to the usual italic, but I use that
as a catch-all for anything that doesn't fall into another category
and I'll define the specific expression as needed.

I don't put many expressions in my template. Except for dynamics, my
categories start out nearly empty, with just a couple of really basic
ones. They exist primarily for the category definition, then I'll add
expressions as needed in each document. I haven't found it valuable
to have a zillion expressions pre-made. If I need, say, "molto
allargando", it's easier to just type it fresh than hunt through a
list of 50 phrases looking for it.

A couple of related questions about category staff lists (some have
'em, some don't): Is there a way to get a new expression category

I remember wondering the same thing. After looking around a bit I
just gave up and used duplication. I also couldn't figure out how to
delete categories I don't want. I'm not sure that's possible either.

Thank you, Mark. Sounds as if we're going down similar paths, though
I probably want a few more pre-defined expressions at my disposal than
you. FYI, there is a button at the bottom of the "Category Designer"
window that allows you to delete a category.

Re: [Finale] Expression organization

2010-08-01 Thread Mark D Lew
I had mixed feelings about the new expressions scheme. On the one
hand I was delighted that the positioning had been expanded with
multiple levels of definition instead of the simple X,Y for each
expression; but on the other hand I felt it fell far short of what it
might have in terms of making things easier for my own use.

In particular, I was disappointed with the UI. It's hard to tell how
much of it is due to unfamiliarity with the new, and how much is just
the design, but I felt like I spent an awful lot of time clicking
around between windows to put things where I wanted them, as opposed
to the old system where I could just type the Y position directly and
be done with it. As with so many things in Finale, I get the
impression that they're trying to shove all this "under the hood",
devoting a great deal of effort to trying to make it so that ordinary
users would rarely or never visit the definition dialogs at all, but
very little effort to making it more efficient for those who do visit
them regularly.

I think I had an unrealistic expectation that once I got all my
definitions in how I wanted them, I'd be able to just place
expressions and have them land where I want >75% of the time, but it
never worked out that way for me. The main thing is that every
expression just has a single definition for default Y positioning.
That's fine for an orchestra part, but nearly all of my work is piano
vocal. In general, I'm going to want to put most markings in the
voice part above the staff, whereas in the piano part most markings
are going to go between the staves, at a Y position that will vary
depending on what's going on in each hand. The new system just can't
handle that.

I experimented for a while with two separate definitions for all my
expressions, one above the staff and one below, but that proved more
trouble than it was worth. I like using metatools for my dynamics and
having two keystrokes for each one was taxing both my memory and the
supply of available characters on the keyboard. Ultimately I went
back to just one definition for each, defined for the voice part
(which I could define to be correct ~90% of the time), accepting that
I'll just have to specify Y position for anything in the piano part.

That means that placing expressions in the piano part is now slower
for me than it were before. In the old system clicking took me
straight to the X Y positions and since I usually knew exactly where
I wanted it, I just entered the numbers and was done. Now I have to
place the expression by default, then shift-click to change the
positioning. Also, the math is harder now because my default Y is
based on staffline or entry, so if the entry is bumping it up, I have
to work that in and net the offsets in my head to know what number to
enter as Y. I could avoid that by defining the Y just to the staff,
but for my voice part I do want staff-and-entry so that would bring
me back to the problem of having multiple definitions for
expressions, which again is more trouble than it's worth.

But after a while I've started to get used to the extra clicks and
extra math, and I'm OK with it. It's still a significant improvement
over all. I really like having much more levels at which to define
things; I am completely satisfied with horizontal position, which is
wonderful and much more powerful than it was before; and I like
having what amounts to multiple typographic and positioning defaults
for a new expression by way of the categories.

On the whole, even with its flaws, I think it's still my favorite
improvement between v04 and v10. Perhaps I'm forgetting something, I
can't think of any other change between the two that I much care
about. It seems like the big things were part extraction and
playback, neither of which I ever use.

wrong? How could that be?

[Finale] ITunes?

Have any of you tried this? Any hints?

Are you trying to actually SHARE a library between two computers or having a
library on ONE computer and have another one access it (Read only)? Two
different things.

Darcy's solution accomplishes the second one.

Exactly. My first Finale was v1.0. I paid $1k! I read Finale manuals every
night in my bed, and I memorized pretty much everything. I can't do that
anymore with PDF manual. Once I bought the printout. MM charged me $35 or

Back then, these three spiral bound manuals were perfect for bedtime reading.
I was the Finale master back then. Not so anymore ever since they went to PDF
