[Finale] Bizarre playback

2010-12-22 Thread Michael Lawlor
[Finale 2009]
I am encountering a range of unexpected results from playback. I have tried
VST instruments (with and without human playback) and normal MIDI, but all
suffer from the same problems.

1) If I play from the beginning I hear all the parts, but if I start playback
elsewhere, some parts do not sound.

2) Although dynamics are specified, some parts play more quietly than others
(of the same kind: 6 oboes 6 bassoons) and some get quieter. There has been
a dim. a few bars earlier, but it should have been completed and a forte should
be in effect.

3) A tempo change (crotchet = 60 becomes crotchet = 90) only lasts about 1/2
bar before reverting to the previous tempo.

Any help would be appreciated.

When this happens to me, I use Jari Williamsson's JW Tempo plugin to
force it to manually override the unpredictable vagaries.

As far as I know there is a corruption in MIDI data, I encountered that
problem now and then in some files created with version 2006 (Windows).

I had to re-create the interested measures to get rid of the problem.

One thing you could try if you haven't already:

Click on the speaker icon button on the Playback Controls toolbar, then on
the
Playback/Record Options button near the bottom of the panel. Check that you
have
Selected Chase from First Measure in the Dynamics and markings box.

Hope it helps

Re: [Finale] finale script batch print to PDF

2010-12-22 Thread Fiskum, Steve
Hello Jef,

Selecting the Adobe PDF printer to print a PDF no longer works in 10.6. If
you are on 10.6 using Adobe Acrobat Distiller, FinaleScript will not help
you. If you have QuicKeys write a sequence to bring up the print dbx, select
Save As Postscript under the PDF pull-down menu, and send the PS file to a
watched folder then Distiller creates your PDF. Next, set the sequence to
batch. It's a weird workaround but I receive specific job optioned PDFs due
to the fact that you can set different watched folders that will use
specific job options. I don't have to worry about using an incorrect job
option for a project.

Another option is to select Save as Adobe PDF under the PDF pull-down menu
(within the Print dbx) but it takes too long to run and is not predictable
enough to script.

Frankly, I would say that if you have an old 10.4 machine around, use that
as a PDF creator.

Hope that helps,
Steve

Michael,

About your playback problem, if you have Human Playback activated, you
might try a different playback type (or none). I found out last July
that at least one of the Human Playback modes (Jazz) has a feature

Re: [Finale] Bizarre playback

2010-12-22 Thread Christopher Smith
It's a longstanding bug that most expressions chase from measure one, but
keyswitches don't (say, arco to pizz, mutes, and for all I know maybe softer
versions of some instruments.)

Balance is a tricky issue, because one can't expect a p trumpet to be balanced
with a p flute in its bottom octave, for example. Most issues related to
balance, unless the same dynamic gives a different volume to the SAME
instrument, can probably be traced to simply Finale doesn't really know what
correct balance is. You have the Studio view to sort out all that.

I don't know what to say about the tempo problem, except is it possible that
you have an expression partway through the bar that has playback associated
with tempo? Even if you didn't set it yourself? Sometimes I have taken an
expression that I liked the look of, changed the text, but didn't check the
playback, and then it had unexpected results.

That's my experience as well. The Romantic setting does some nice things
with dynamic and tempo shape, but also produces some degraded results.

nope, as steve mentioned earlier, using Adobe to print does NOT work.
you are talking about the built-in OS method of PDF generation, which
cannot be automated via finalescript in 10.6.

Re: [Finale] finale script batch print to PDF

2010-12-22 Thread Fiskum, Steve
Here is the reason I go straight to Postscript to a watched folder. I don't
want my PDFs mucked up with Apple's PDF engine and then Distilled.

From: Leonard Rosenthol

What we do is let Apple do the original creation of the PDF using their
Quartz technology and then we ³transcode² their PDF into one of ³Adobe
quality² based on your job options settings. So while it starts out as
Apple, it ends up as Adobe (using our PDFLibrary, etc.)
