Probably the safest bet.

Though wouldn't it be easier to rename the OFarticulations font to
Articulations? Doesnt font utility support that?

Dear Eric,

Thanks, but this is daunting to me. I have not used these things before, and I
do get the concern over the renaming issue. I think I will call MM tomorrow
and ask advice from their support people.

2011-11-09 Thread Eric Dannewitz
You'd have to have a script run from finder that gets all the file
names you want to process, opens them, runs the data check, and then
saves them.

The first part is pretty easy to do in AppleScript. The second
part:I dunno. And then how do you override a new version of finale
bringing up the wanting to save a new file since and old file is
opened as untitled #1?

I think if there is a way to trigger a finale script from AppleScript,
then it should be possible. I DO see a swap font command in
finalescriptso that part would work. I'd just be concerned how to
override the default behavior of finale asking what file name to save

[Finale] Finale scripts etc.

2011-11-09 Thread Chuck Israels
Question for the computer literate: Is there a way to process all the files in
a folder at once - to change fonts? I have a font conflict (or two) that has
cropped up since updating my Bill Duncan articulations to Open Type fonts (they
are now called FPArticulations). The older font - simply called
"Articulations" shows up incorrectly, and a data check/font utility will solve
the problem on any given file, but I have hundreds of files with the problem,
and I dread the thought of having to process each one in turn. Is this the
kind of thing that can be done with a Finale Script and applied to a folder's
worth of files? If so, has anyone had experience with this and can you offer
some step by step instructions to someone who is a little afraid of this?

Thanks,

Just because he has died, which is very sad, there's no need to beat
about the bush -- he could be downright insulting if he thought a
person's reply was beneath contempt. Of course, he was always right. :-)

I'm saddened by his loss because he was a good contributor to this list
until he decided not to keep up with the newest upgrades, and then he
wasn't so much a positive contributor of assistance as he was a pretty
solid questioner of concepts and practices.

He definitely knew his music, though, insulting or not. The musical
world has lost an excellent musician and scholar.

This list's Dave Fenton lived in New York City, played viol in a
consort, was working on recording a CD recently, and hasn't posted
anything to the contrary on this list, which makes me think that the one
who has died is the David Fenton from this list. Everything written
about him in that article on the viol consort supports my knowledge of
what David Fenton did for a living besides his musical involvement.

He would be the first one to call anybody an idiot for falsely posting
about his death. But he hasn't done that.

It IS our David, by the way. Just look at his own signature from letters to
this list:

The first link shows his picture with his viol consort.

Eric, research is a good thing in cases such as this.

It's not funny at all, Eric. I was honestly apologizing if my original
report was incorrect, but I don't think it is. I seldom post on this
list, but I've been lurking for several years and what David has posted
about his work (playing the viol, working on a dissertation on 18th
century music, , working as a computer consultant, etc.) matches the
biographical material I found. And at least one of the other regular
posters on this list seems to agree with me.

In the recent thread about sales tax, our David Fenton asked specifically about
New York, not California.
  I'm pretty sure he
lives in New York.

Assuming this is indeed the David Fenton we know, I join others in mourning his
passing. Notwithstanding his frequent crankiness, he was a valuable member of
our community and I learned a lot from him.

2011-11-09 Thread Eric Dannewitz
That is funny as it was you that posted about him dying in the first
place. I mean, if I happened to see a wade kotter who sounded similar
but lived in Atlanta Georgia..would I assume it was you?

I stand by my assertion that this is a different David Fenton.

I thought he was in NYC.
The pictures of him with the viol group are NYC. NYU is in NYC (or I was in an
extended state of altered consciousness in Washington Square in the late 60s).

2011-11-09 Thread Robert Patterson
Actually, I am fairly sure it is the same David Fenton. (I am sure if I am
wrong he will let us know!) I had a number of offline conversations with
him over the years, and his bio in the obituaries I have found match what
he told me about himself.

Re: [Finale] Custom arrowheads no longer cause failure in EPS creation in FinMac2012?

2011-11-09 Thread Chuck Israels
Hi Christopher,

Can't confirm the resolution of this bug, but I have found one other small one
that seems to have appeared in 2012, and I'd like to know if others have found
it before reporting it to MM. If you have configured your piano "group" to
hide empty staves normally, when you create your score, the linked part does
not maintain that setting but reverts to "Hide only if all staves empty", and
this must be reset by editing the group before you can hide a staff. Is there
something I am missing in the use of the score manager, or am I right about
this?

Thanks,

Chuck

[Finale] Custom arrowheads no longer cause failure in EPS creation in FinMac2012?

2011-11-09 Thread Christopher Smith
Hi all,

I am presently testing my depressingly long list of previously existing bugs in
Finale, to see which ones are still there in 2012, so I can send it in to
MakeMusic.

For a long time, using a Smart Line with a custom arrowhead caused EPS creation
to fail on Mac (sorry Windows users, I know EPS creation has been broken for a
long time for you.) I can't get that bug to appear with the supplied custom
arrowheads, nor with custom arrowheads I made myself. I would love to call this
bug exterminated. Can anyone using FinMac 2012 confirm?

Thanks in advance.

I am so sorry to hear this. David was my very favorite cranky poster on this
list. I never saw his face & never heard his voice, but I did know the music
he played and composed, and his ability to pull issues apart in incredible
detail. Such a loss.

[Finale] Changing instruments in Fin2012, staff name font weirdness

2011-11-09 Thread Christopher Smith
For those who might be struggling with this, I discovered this by accident.

When you change an instrument using the new Score Manager (say, from Alto Sax
to Flute), the staff takes on the name of the new instrument. However, the font
it uses is taken from the setting in Document Options>Fonts>Text>Staff Name
(FULL) instead of Staff Name (Abbreviated), even though on the score you would
only see the abbreviated name.

You can edit this after the fact, but it would get rather long and tedious if
you have many instruments changing frequently, like in a percussion staff. I
would suggest changing the default Staff Name (full) setting in Doc Options to
what you want, then you can change it back if you have new staves to create.

In a related bug, if you ever change from a pitched percussion instrument like
vibraphone to an unpitched instrument like drumset, the key signature changes
to C with naturals at the start of the drumset notation. This is wrong, as the
key signature should NOT be cancelled or shown, but rather simply ignored. You
can't change this with Measure Attributes because it will change for ALL the
other instruments in the score, but you should create a staff style to hide the
key signature and apply it to the first bar of the drumset instrument. This
will also hide the cautionary key change, if the drumset notation starts a new
system.

I would also prefer to be able to see where the new instrument notation shows
up in the score, but you can't always get what you want.

Here's a tribute from the NYU Department of Music:

And here's some information on the viol consort David belonged to:

Ironically, I ordered their new CD for our collection just a few days
ago.

[Finale] Fwd: [MLA-L] David Fenton

2011-11-09 Thread Wade KOTTER
I believe this is the David Fenton who often posted to this list. I know
he was often difficult to deal with, but I still think he should be
remembered with appreciation for his various contributions as a musician
and a musicologist.

The plug-in makes the tremolo marking in the form of altered beams. You can
adjust them with the beams special tool. You may also need to tweak the
spacing to create a little more room between the notes.

On Nov 8, 2011, at 8:19 PM, Raymond Horton wrote:

My default plan would be:

1. Check "use a different time signature for display".

2. Pick "composite" for the display time sig, and set it up as 6/8 + 3/4.

3. Under Document Options > Time Signature change the plus character to a fixed
space. (I use opt-space on Mac, gives better spacing than an ordinary space; it
shows as 202 on Finale's character chart.)

4. Then set up the parentheses as a text expression.

This work in most cases, though it can cause spacing difficulties if one falls
at the end of the system. It's also a problem if you need a real composite
time signature with a plus elsewhere in the piece.
