[Finale] 2012 Feature Request
I've just submitted a feature request regarding two issues. I'd be interested if anyone else is also having problems with these. They're both playback related: Score Manager 1.The disappearance of the Mute All/Mute None/Solo None buttons from the score manager (formerly in the instrument list) is a definite step back in terms of efficiency. It takes a lot more time to un-mute or un-solo particular instruments. Is there any way to re-introduce these? I notice that the 'M' and 'S' at the top of the window seem to be clickable, but have no effect. Could these become the Global Solo/Mute Buttons? Sliders in VST Window and Mixer 2. In the VST Banks and Effects window, it would be extremely helpful if the value display to the right of each of the volume sliders actively reflected the adjustment as it was being made, rather than when one releases the slider. Currently there is no way to know how much of an adjustment has been made, and this is particularly true since the sliders seem to be non-linear (the same adjustement towards the right end has more of an effect than at the left). Alternatively, or ideally in addition, the option to type a value in might help. To give an example, in the VST Banks and Effects Window, I just moved the Master Volume from its default of 100 down and then tried to get it back to 100 (or to almost any specific value). No matter how much I tried I have been unable to return it to its original value. This seems a fairly fundamental problem in the usability of the sliders. This seems to be the same situation with all sliders, including those in studio view and the faders in the general mixer (the one that CTRL+SHIFT+M brings up). I find there's a lot of trial and error that needs to go on to get the right adjustment. Most adjustments are taking several moves of the slider/pan pot, since there's no way of moving it immediately to the correct value in a single move of the controller. Every tweak takes twice to three times as long as a result. I was hoping they might have been fixed in 2012b, but unfortunately not. Re: [Finale] 2012 Feature Request
Also playback related - the pause button now seems to serve exactly the same function as the stop button - it stops playback and on restarting either goes back to the start of the piece or to the designated starting place. In older versions, pause did exactly what it said, it paused playback and re-started at the place it paused whilst stop took you back to the start. I know that you can change the start point in the playback options box but this used to only effect the stop and play buttons. Re: [Finale] Trouble with 2012b Mac installer?
Successful resolution: Just to warn anyone else who might be succumbing to old habits, I had done something that turns out to be unnecessary for versions since 2010 - I had created a Finale 2012 folder inside my Applications folder and put the Finale 2012 app inside it along with the Finale 2012 Preferences file. I've been doing that for years, because that used to be the only way to keep multiple versions of Finale on your hard disk and still keep them from trying to use each other's Preferences files. I'm told that's no longer necessary, and in fact by creating a new Finale 2012 folder in my Applications folder, the 2012b updater didn't find the original app and instead created a new (non-functioning) one outside my Finale 2012 folder, leaving the original one alone. Once I dragged the 2012 app out of its own folder and reran the installer, it found it and successfully updated it. I'm especially interested in using the new version to see if it will in fact generate new FAN files for the Bill Duncan chord symbol fonts so I don't have to search for the proper version of the FAN file if I'm using a document that can't find it for some reason. What keeps happening is that ties, etc. don't position correctly in Rhythmic Notation if you don't have the correct FAN file installed, so I'm hopeful this will smooth things out in that department. Re: [Finale] Trouble with 2012b Mac installer?
Dear Doug, I am out of town for a week but would be interested to hear if the Bill Duncan FAN issue has been resolved, so that I will know what to do when I get home. There were issues with some symbols showing up in slot positions in the editing matrix that were literally off the grid and therefore next to impossible to access in order edit the FAN files. [Finale] Document styles vs. templates
I'm trying to assess the relative merits of using document styles for starting new projects in Fin2012b as opposed to templates. I used the Setup Wizard to create a new orchestral score (also a customized Ensemble), imported all my settings, artics, expressions, etc., then painstakingly edited all the staff and group names and positions as I prefer and saved the whole thing as a new document style. But if I try to create a new score using this document style and the setup wizard, all the staff and group editing is gone. Of course, if I create the new score directly from a template, all the staff and group changes are there. It seems to me that going the template route will save a lot more time, even if I have to add or remove some instruments and redo the scaling. Am I missing something with document styles? -Lee Lee Actor Composer-in-Residence and Assistant Conductor, Palo Alto Philharmonic http://www.leeactor.com ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
