RE: [Finale] two parts on one staff

2011-03-16 Thread Gary Griffiths
I love this, will make the full scores much easier to read. Just a few
questions/notes.

I needed to check stem directions in layers under document-layers options,
so that the stems in the parts went the right way. Check 'ignore layers
containing only hidden notes'.

If, say, on a flute part with both flutes on the same stave, but separate
parts, there is an extended passage for first flute only, that music all
shows up in the second flute part as well. Unless I add real whole rests in
layer two for the second flute part in the score. Unfortunately this means
no multimeasure rest in the second flute PART. Also, all dynamics, hairpins
etc. show up on the second flute part, even though there is no music. Any
way round this?

And one more, though not so important - using Garritan sounds is there any
way to get both flute parts to sound during playback of the full score.

Denis, try this:

Document Menu - Manage Parts - In the linked parts boxes you will have
needed to set up the 2 instruments that share the same stave in the left
hand box but assign the same stave to each in the centre box by clicking on
 add to Part

then select each of these instruments one at a time in Staves Groups Parts
(Centre box) and

Check Specify Voicing

Click on Edit Voicing then -

for layer 1 part check Selected Notes from one or more layer(s)

Rules for Selecting Notes from one or more layers check Top note

In Measures Containing Multiple layers, display layer 1

for layer 2 part check Selected Notes from one or more layer(s)

Rules for Selecting Notes from one or more layers check Bottom note

In Measures Containing Multiple layers, display layer 2

This way when every you have parts in separate layers 1 and 2 they will show
as such in each respective part, and if you have measures where both parts
move with the same rhythm, you can put in the notes as 2 note chords and it
will split accordingly, this saves a lot of space in the score with stems
etc.
(N.B. if the second parts rises higher than the 1st you will need to put
them in as layers 1 2.

Also, if there are unison passages the single line part will now appear in
both the parts.

Unfortunately Make Music don't set this up in their templates even though
they contain parts that share staves so it's not much use looking there for
an example set up.

Remember to adjust the displacement of rests for the layers in the Layers
dialogue under document options.

It's a fiddle, but once done it can save a huge amount of time. Try to get
your templates set up in this way and then you won't need to repeat all this
every time.

Hope this helps,

Jonathan

I have a piece where two instruments share a staff in the score. So I have
them each in a different layer. I would like the parts to only have one
instrument, so I edited the voicing accordingly, giving each layer a
separate part. Everything is fine, except that the parts, even with only one
layer, keep the layer options of the score (stems, rests, ties). Is there
any obvious way to get around this problem (Finale 2008)?

 Many thanks,

 Dennis

Re: [Finale] iPad as electronic music stand

2010-12-10 Thread Gary Griffiths
I am housebound at the moment with severe Sciatica and my iPad has been a life
saver. I can only either stand up or lie flat on my back so every afternoon I
have loaded up my iPad with scores (PDFs from http://imslp.org/wiki/Main_Page )
and lay down to listen to the afternoon concert on BBC radio 3. The PDFs mostly
work really well with iBooks. I've found that with the really large files you
have to give it a few minutes to load up and the page turns are sometimes a bit
slow, but on the whole it's been great for me.

Kenton recorded it. Are any of you familiar with it? Have any of you

hi, would appreciate it if anyone who can spare 2 minutes can have a look at

tobias can't seem to find anything wrong with his plugin (smart explosion /

anyone else can actually make it work, and if not, if they are getting the

also if anyone has successfully used the plugin in F2010, please let me
know. i am fully willing to admit the problem may be in my setup but am not
able to establish that for certain, since i know of at least a couple other
people who have had problems with this PI.

most frustrating is that the developer doesn't seem to want to admit there
is a problem as long as it works as expected on his own setup...

RE: [Finale] Save as Audion File

2005-08-09 Thread Gary Griffiths
Thank you Darcy and Hiro - Yes I have tried reducing that, no change. Also
tried reducing volume in instrument list window and Base Velocity in
Playback options (what is the difference in these two settings?) and volume
in Windows sound Properties. Shouldn't these all be overridden by dynamic
expressions anyway? I have fiddled around now quite a lot and still seems to
be no logic to when it distorts.

For what it is worth, this was my method for rehearsal CDs in WinFin2k5

Open Piano Vocal score (SATB and Piano)

Clear everything except notes (lyrics measure expressions, smart shapes etc.
etc. - the shortcuts have changed for this in 2k6 but that's another thread,
I don't like the new mass edit).

Add dynamics such - sop fff ATB ppp piano p

Save as special (*.wav)

Change sop to ppp Alto to fff

Save

Etc. - I'm sure you get the idea. (I do not need expression in these files,
they are purely for note-bashing, I put the expression in in rehearsals)

On a new file in 2k6 this does not produce consistent results. I can get the
first file (Sop) ok but then when I change the dynamics for the Alto file,
sometimes the LH of the Piano goes wild (distorted), sometimes the RH. I can
stop the distortion (sometimes!) by changing the channel in the Instrument
list window. But sometimes this doesn't work. I will try using the mixer
(ugh) rather than dynamics and see if that makes any sense.

and then next time it distorts. I can get rid of the distortion sometimes by
changing the channel in the instrument list window, but there does not seem to
be consistent reason. Saving as audio still works fine on WinFin2k5, so it isnt
my midi setup or soundcard. Im not using GPO (at the moment) so Im thinking
it must be something to do with the new studio/mixer stuff. Human Playback (on/off)
does not make a difference either.

Im up early (5.30) today to spend some
time on this so I dont waste another day.

Gary

Audion File

You have a choice Audion
file or AIFF -- Audion is for Audion only. Save the file to AIFF

I am trying to save as an audio file (wav), but when I play it back all I get
is really distorted playback, sounding like a very overdriven electric guitar,
when all I want is clarinet and piano.

This
is from files created in earlier versions, so I tried from scratch.

Setup
Wizard
SmartSynth
Sounds
Create
score with piano and clarinet
Add
simple notes to each part
No
dynamics or markings of any sort.
Save
Special as Audio File (wav) (This is for burning to CD)
Check
playback in I-Tunes and WMP.

Still
greatly distorted.

This
could be a real deal-maker for me. I make a lot of rehearsal CDs for my choirs.

Any
ideas

[Finale] OT - rehearsal veneus UK

2005-07-26 Thread Gary Griffiths
Does anyone on here know any good rehearsal venues in or near Nottingham,
UK? I need space for a choir of 200, a piano, disabled access preferably,
and parking. In other areas we have used churches and schools, but as we are
based in Leeds, we don't know the Nottingham area very well.

Many thanks

RE: [Finale] Vertical Spacing Algorithms

2005-07-06 Thread Gary Griffiths
When I ordered my Fin2k6 and filled in the questionnaire - that was the one
feature I asked for. I have also requested it before.

Am I the only one who wants vertical spacing handled automatically?

Definitely not the only one! It's not on the very top of my list, but it
would save considerable time -- and if it were part of an algorithmic
approach, could be modified nicely by the visual plugin maestros such as
Robert Patterson. (And vertical spacing was one of the really fine features
of Graphire.)

[Finale] Emergency Request for parts

2005-02-04 Thread Gary Griffiths
Dear All - is there anyone in the UK that has a set of parts for 'A Boy Like
That' and 'Maria' from West Side Story, and would be willing to rent them to
us. Boosey and Hawkes are trying to get hold of a set from the states for us
to hire, but they are not getting results.

And the concert is next week!

Many thanks
