Re: [Finale] Lyrics entry [was: Re: Part prints at 1/16 size of page]

2015-08-07 Thread Jim Gray
On Macs in the Finale lyric tool, while typing directly into the score, if the
shift key is held while the space bar is pressed, the curser is sent backwards.
My suspicions are that Mr. Parmerlee, while having to press the shift key to
create the capital I, may inadvertently still have the shift key pressed when
he hits the space bar. I know it has happened to me a few times, forcing me to
consider my typing coordination skills, which are already pretty low.

 Are you using a Mac?

Because I just ran a test on the Windows version of Finale2014:
 1) Started a brand new document, using the default template
 2) entered two measures: 4 quarter notes and a whole note in 4/4 time
 3) entered directly into the score: Some-one should I call (they didn't
need to make sense, just had to include several syllables before the
word I which you say is a problem) -- there was no jumping of the
cursor. The word I stayed right where I entered it.
 4) opened the Lyrics window and created verse 2 with the words What
 should I do now?
 5) click-assigned verse 2 beneath my directly entered lyrics -- again,
there was no problem at all.
 6) went back into verse 1 and highlighted the word call and typed I
and again there was no problem.

So if you're on Mac, it's a Mac issue. If you're on Windows, it's not a
problem with Finale but rather with whatever file or files you've tried
to use the word I in the lyrics tool.

Once you get your list of bugs typed, you should post it here before
submitting it to Finale so that we can all test them to see if they
really are bugs or are somehow only bugs on your system or when using
 your templates.

according to my AutoSave schedule. So it would appear to have been saved and
somehow kept in such a way that reopening the file accesses the AutoSave
version. It’s mysterious to me how this is done, but things seem to be
working this way for me, and since the AutoSave function no longer seems to
result in a momentary delay, as it used to in 2012, I have it set to save
every 5 minutes, so I hardly lose much work when there is a crash.

 Anyone else confirm this impression?

Re: [Finale] orchestra show of power? or justified deadline?

2015-06-03 Thread Jim Gray
Hi Jef,

I would think this is a reasonable request to get the string parts to the
concertmaster and principles before their vacation starts for bowings and part
assignments (for wind played and percussionists, etc.). I have had to deal with
this for shows that are early in the season, so that the principles could truly
enjoy their vacation without any work load.

This is just my opinion and experience though, since I don’t know about your
exact situation. Has the librarian or admin. staff offered any explanation?

this is not the first time i have seen such deadlines. is it that
the librarians don't go on vacation and prepare the parts for the

this request, and as we know, few composers have any real power to
stand up to the orchestral monster.

the original deadline was 15 august for an early october performance.
now they are demanding to have the parts before their vacation period
starts, whcih would mean materials lying on someone's desk as of 31
 july.

 yeah.

Re: [Finale] Upgrading to Finale Mac 2014

2014-07-16 Thread Jim Gray
The only problem I had after the Mavericks upgrade was printing 2 sides up on
12x18 landscape. Seems to be a compatibility problem with Mavericks and HP.
The only way I can make it work is to save as a PDF and configure each PDF part
separately to 12X18 landscape. If anyone has a work around, I'd appreciate
hearing about it.

Re: [Finale] Upgrading to Finale Mac 2014

2014-07-16 Thread Jim Gray
Scott,

What size paper are you printing on? I can print on 8½ x 11 11 x 17 both
landscape and portrait, and 9 x 12 portrait with no problem. But when I try to
print on 12 x 18 landscape I am not able. As I have researched this it seems to
apply across the board outside of Finale. I noticed a few complaints from
architects trying to print oversized blueprints on 12 x 18.

I use an HP 5500.
