It's there in the Drums section -- Bongo Drums.  It shows up if you
select "Common" or "All" or "World" in the left-hand column and then
select "Drums" in the middle column.

At least that's what happens on Fin25/Windows.

The export has those stray "3" characters at the bottom of page 2. I can't
locate them in the Finale file. They appear to be slightly larger versions of
the "3" that I use for tuplets.

I've zoomed out in both page and scroll view to see if they were scattered
somewhere way out of view. No luck.

Any clues on how to find them? And why they might only appear in a Finale
export-to-PDF and not the print-to-PDF? They don't appear on other files that
use the same template.

NEUEWEISE -- FONTS FOR NEW MUSIC AND TRADITIONAL NOTATION

Designed to respond to the diverse needs of New
Music notation, the neueweise font family
enhances the look of any score. The Notes,
Articulations and Pitches fonts can also add a
modern touch of elegance to your Classical music
score.

Character charts and examples using neueweise fonts can be found on this page:
http://newmusicnotation.com/fonts.html

The Fonts

Notes -- Noteheads common to New Music, as well
as rests, and straight and angled flags.

Articulations -- A range of articulations, bow
markings, fermati, tremolos with 1-5 bars,
fingernail, guitar pick, slap tongue, Bartók
pizz. and more.

Pitches -- Standard accidentals and quarter tones
(flats and sharps), as well as inflected versions
(arrows up/down) and smaller versions with
brackets; also round and square brackets for use
with notes and accidentals.

Use and Design

Although neueweise fonts were designed
specifically for New Music, they work perfectly
for traditional notation as well. Some notable
features of the font set:

- Accidentals contains quarter tones and
inflected (arrow up/down) quarter tones;
- Inflected accidentals are legible even in reduced size scores;
- Narrower width of some characters saves
horizontal "real estate" in the score;
- Unified width of many noteheads ensures
consistent appearance using alternate noteheads;
- A bold and stylish design will make your work
stand out, musicians love your scores.

Finale Users

Font Annotation files (FANs) are included for
each font. A stem connection library is included
with Notes; an articulation library is included
with Articulations.

I still haven't figured how to mute or solo all of them at once. I think they

Re: [Finale] latin percussion

2014-05-24 Thread Michael Mathew
I have worked the percussion tutorial several times over a period of several
years. I have also used the 3rd edition of the easy guide to music notation
from the berklee press. I have been successful a few times. Also, there is a
plethora of outstanding tutorials on various latin percussion instruments by
all kinds of incredibly talented percussionists scattered all over the internet
with lots of information and tips. I have had to resort to all of this, as well
as what the online finale manual has to offer in a desperate attempt to learn
how to use this aspect of finale and some success!!

I hope this helps! It can be done, I know, I am sure? Good luck and have
patience with yourself as well as with everything finale!

Hi Gerald,
I've done this when, for one reason or another, HP frustrates me, or controls

a non-vibrato piccolo.

The easiest way to do it is to set up the different sounds you want on
different tracks. You can put an invisible expression in (either blank, or with
a name that you hide). When you make the expression, under playback, you set it
change the channel. Finale/Garritan can have four banks of 16 channels each,
numbered (under playback channels in the the expression playback section) 1-16,
17-32, 33-48, 49-60. So you set up the Aria player with exactly the sound you
want on separate channels, then create the channel-changing expressions, then
pop them in. And don't forget to create an expression to change back to the
primary sound!

2013-11-06 Thread Michael Mathew
I purchased the Berklee Press 3rd edition of their book Finale, an easy guide
to music notation, and went through each chapter from the beginning of the book
to the end and found many sections illustrating the many ways of using the
score manager in real situations. I use this manual as a reference work for the
many parts of Finale.

Take a look at it in a book store and see if it might help.

I learned a lot and am grateful for them making it available to the rest of us.
I began with Finale 3.2 and found this to be the next best book beside the
regular manuals. I also find the online help to be very useful.

Hi Scott,

I'd be happy to talk about this with you, but I'm afraid I can't be all that
helpful, since I don't often write for percussion (and no, I don't do much
sophisticated stuff bypassing Finale playback).

What I have done is, on the percussion track, play up and down my midi keyboard
until I hear the sound I want, and then enter that.  It often creates a bad
notation, but the sound is fine.  A few years ago, the last time I used
percussion, I did wade into a combination of maps and, I think, staff styles
(for Finale 2011 -- I didn't upgrade to 2012, which handles some of this
differently). I don't remember what I did -- maybe it was simply to convince
Finale to display almost everything as the equivalent of treble-clef-middle-B?

Beyond this, I think your best bet is to write to finale@shsu.edu (the
non-finale-sponsored email list), and ask for help there.  There are some
really good finale people there, some of whom have figured out the percussion
(though they do complain about it). If you can't post as a non-member, or can
post but not see responses, let me know, and I'll forward you things.  You may
also find someone there who will be willing to talk you through this.

The last-ditch option is to have two files, one for playback and one for
printout.  You could work almost exclusively in the playback file until you are
ready to print, and then go back and fix the percussion so it looks good.  I
have done this also.

Hope you are well.  I saw your name pop up in a summary of the Met commissions
so far. I was sorry to see that they aren't going further with your project (at
least that's what the article seemed to suggest), but I'm guessing you must
have other folks lined up, either committed or soon to be?

All best,
David

Dear Craig Parmerlee,

In the score manager each instrument has a triangle to the left in Fin2011 and
in Fin2012 under the name column which you click. There you find the separate
layers, chords, and expression playbeci that can be turned off and on.

I am looking at Fin2011 and Fin 2012.

Does that help?

Re: [Finale] adding drum set staff

2013-02-14 Thread Michael Mathew
Toro,

I would like to know this secret also.

I have tried all sorts of tutorials and reading the manual and all I can
discover is that, if everything else is OK, then the stars must be aligned
properly to be successful!

I have had little to no success for years!

iMac 24 inch, fin 2012c, 4g memory, etc.

If you come upon the secret for a successful drum part, let the world know;
starting with this group!

Re: [Finale] Page layout behaviour

2013-02-08 Thread Michael Mathew
Stephen,

1. what shows when you've checked margins is not the same thing.

2. view menu; grid/guide; check, show guides

3. view menu; show; rulers

4. with cursor in rule, double click and the blue line with a heart shaped
arrow head, will appear on the page under all tools, including page layout.

My first attempt was with the margins showing. It took Jef's reply to help me
make the connection.

Re: [Finale] erratic cautionary accidental plugin

2012-09-22 Thread Michael Mathew
Dear Patrick,

On a more positive note, I have seen many published scores of music written in
the last hundred years wherein the particular notation conventions that are in
play are displayed on separate first pages of the published music that leave
little to speculation. This is a more useful approach, I believe?

Re: [Finale] erratic cautionary accidental plugin

2012-09-22 Thread Michael Mathew
Patrick,

Your lackadaisical attitude towards cautionary accidentals will lead to many
misinterpretations of your music.

I find that the cautionary accidentals leave little to speculation as to
whether a note continues to be a flat , natural, or sharp and eliminates major
confusion for the interpreter. I have found a major offender in the published
music of Hal Leonard. There are many areas in their music where no clear
solution is evident including a reading of the vertical instance. I believe
that the non-use of cautionary accidentals will leave a lot of musical texts
unreadable in the future.

The notational reading and realization of early music is an excellent example
of trying for years to decide which of the interpretations of a squiggle is
correct. Is this not true in this case?

Cautionary accidentals are necessary to avoid any confusion about the pitch of
a note, thank you very much! Don't be lazy!

Hi, Dr. Weinstangel

Have you tried the document options time signature dialogue? I believe that is
where you can create various configurations for the time signature.
Dr. Hal Owen, http://pages.uoregon.edu/hjowen/, has several Final tutorials

Re: [Finale] Distance between lines in a TAB staff

2012-08-26 Thread Michael Mathew
Greetings, Klaus!

I had some experience with this when I assisted Bruce Eisenbeil, an outstanding
guitarist from the list. The dialogue for this has been transferred from the
edit staff menu to the scoremanager window on the instrument list page. In the
lower right section of the window is a drop down menu for various staff layout
options wherein you are able to increase or decrease the distances between
various staff layouts as well as add or subtract lines.

This might help you solve the problem.

Re: [Finale] Joining files.

2012-08-24 Thread Michael Mathew
I tried to attach to the frame attributes and wound up with a problem I had to
solve the other way. I probably missed something?

I usually have to use the expressions and add them to the parts after breaking
the link to the score for that particular expression. I just had to go through
this process for a brass trio by Alan Pierce and this seemed to be the easiest
solution for me at the time.

Thanks,

Re: [Finale] FinMac2012b - kernel_task going crazy

2012-08-11 Thread Michael Mathew
Darcy,

I don't know if this is relative or not because I am not good at computer
programming, etc.

I'm wondering if DiskWarrior is supposed to help with slow downs and so forth?

I have tried it on general principles once in a while and it seems to help
sometimes.

I also use David Pogues early MAC OS X suggestion to
restart, hold down command s until it boots into the shell, and then at the
command line run fsck (hyphen)-fy and hit return.

Then type reboot and hit return/enter.

Re: [Finale] MakeMusic tip of the day

2012-06-22 Thread Michael Mathew
I have used the toggle up until now. I can now see the immediate effect having
the new window open and the two tiled and am able to make adjustments more
easily and precisely.

As with anything, I suppose, each person's mileage will differ?

Re: [Finale] text blocks with inserts disappear when edited

2012-05-21 Thread Michael Mathew
I have an iMac from 2007 with 4 gigs memory
I set up a file with no libraries and the insert text process worked as you
described in your original email.

open new doc from default; or create "new doc with no libraries" and
create a text block with "Part/Score Name" insert

I can make the text disappear within the file or edit text dialogue box.
Is it because there are no libraries?

Let me know if you need more information.

Re: [Finale] ADDING STAVE after formatting parts

2012-04-30 Thread Michael Mathew
Greetings Kim,

I have recently been working with score manager as well, and have successfully
added parts in this manner to a score that is already formatted. It helps to
work with a copy of the file until you determine how well it is going to work.

(I am working on an 24" iMac with the most recent version of Lion and Fin2012a)

Re: [Finale] Awkward key signature menu

2012-04-18 Thread Michael Mathew
Bill,

I, too, have had a confusing time with the major and minor transpositions, etc.
until I encountered an instructor whose rule of thumb is to ignore the minor
key signatures and work with the major as though they are simply numbers of
sharps or numbers of flats which seems to avoid the awkwardness of major or
minor.

I am glad your problem is solved in time to complete your project! Whew!

Would you share the steps your friend used to solve the problem with a
description of what caused the initial problem?

Thanks,

Re: [Finale] Patterson Plugins V4

2012-03-06 Thread Michael Mathew
Thanks for the new version and considered yourself indulged!

I just sent payment via PayPal and saw no optional information section to write
in my registration number. How did you send the registration number? All I can
see is that I registered for version 3.10.

Thank you,
