RE: [Finale] Saving BUG?
It seems to be limited to the PC, as I haven't heard of any Mac users reporting it. But it looks like this is a serious and widespread problem on the PC version of F2006. It's great to be able to play back 128 channels, but if you try to save audio or midi output, you only get 16--each instance over-writing the previous one. The discussion on the Forum is getting a bit heated. [Finale] Saving BUG?
Hi folks, I’ve been playing back F2006 with full GPO with no problems (minimal anyhow). However, I got a shock when I tried to save as midi—everything is crammed into the first 16 channels. This also happens when using Softsynths and “save as audio” is selected. It’s as if the seven other “instances” of GPO, or Softsynth banks don’t exist as far as the saving algorithms are concerned. I'm sure you have also wishes and priorities. Why not share them? And why not, finally - ask Coda/MakeMusic to make them true? cheers Kurt --- One thing I have been asking for for years is improved handling of multiple time signatures. Right now the only option is that Finale "decides" to accept one staff as the main timekeeper, then adjusts all other staves so that the bar lines all line up. In other words, a 1/4 note in 3/4 time is longer than a 1/4 note in a simultaneous measure of 4/4 time. What I need: 1) an option to make 1/4 notes equal in length in all staves, regardless of the time signatures. (In other words, staggered bar lines). 2) An option to have measures equal in length, but I get to choose which staff will be the "master." (I have asked MM several times for this.) No problems with WinF2006, plus full GPO here. Works like a charm. I am very pleased with playback and the new features. RE: [Finale] Finale 2006 and Garritan Orchestra
No question is naïve, especially when it comes to F2006 and GPO. The only thing you'll need to do is download the latest version of Kontakt player (version 1.1.8.3). If you did this before July 25th, you'll have to do it again. That will put a Full GPO option in your startup wizard (if you're running Windows) and let you use full GPO without fuss or bother. If you have a Mac, then others can best advise you about the pitfalls there. [Finale] Finale, GPO, and Wizard
I’ve been reading all the posts about the fact that GPO is missing in the startup wizard of many people’s machines. Some are quite angry about it. I kept wondering what everyone is talking about, because it is there in my startup Wizard. I have three options in the wizard: 1. Full Garritan GPO, 2. Softsynths, 3. Finale’s version of GPO. So, my questions are: 1) Is it missing only on Mac’s? (I have a PC). 2) Have you installed the patch that was inserted into the Kontakt 1.1.8.3 upgrade early last week? Further on the wizard question, I find the wizard is handy for small groups, but if you’re going to create an orchestral score it’s best to do it “manually”. (So you can assign two voices to a single staff and have the channels in sequence, etc.) If I am wrong about the problem that people have been talking about, please forgive me. But I’ve been having very few minor problems with F2006 & GPO, but on the whole it works like a charm. Or if you are planning on sharing your file with someone whose computer resources are small enough that he/she is only using soundfont playback (yes I know that's midi output, but not to some uninitiated Finale users -- to them it's just another means of sound production). Thus the need for two different scores at least. Until or unless you know that the only people who will be hearing your Finale files will be using GPO playback only. -- David H. Bailey [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You're exactly right. Scores are for printing; MP3's and Waves for listening. I do post some Finale files, but those are small and it's no problem to assign channels to them. But for a large serious work, I am not going to be posting the Finale file. My reason for the comment was to let people know they do not have to mess with Channel 10 for percussion if it doesn't suit them. Maybe they already know that--but I didn't for a long time and kept shooting myself in the foot. I just finished setting up a symphonic score with 40 instruments, using Finale with the full version of GPO. I have each percussion instrument set to a different channel. So, yes, you can have Finale write to Channels 9-16, the have your second instance of Kontakt point to channels 9-16 for their input. But, why bother? I think (though again, I'm just playing with this myself) that the full version of Kontakt allows for 16 channels. In limiting it to 8 (for whatever reason), I suppose it was easier to let the player start every 16, where it usually does, and disable the top 8 rather than making it start every 8. Also, I think that this allows some compatibility between Finale GPO and full GPO -- if a file is set up for Finale it should play in full GPO no problem. But if the player used 1-8 and then 9-16 in Finale GPO, when you tried to load full GPO you'd be asking it to put channel 9 in the second player rather than in the first where full GPO expects it. I admit I was somewhat disappointed with the Finale/GPO instruments. To me they didn't sound much better than the Softsynths. But I just got the patch so I can use the full GPO and I've got all those wonderful sounds back. There is a huge difference between the "generic" solo violin that comes with Finale and the Gagliano (and Stradavari and Guameri) solo violins that come with full GPO. So far, to me, the marriage has been seamless. New files created using the setup wizard automatically use the full GPO patches and expressions trigger the KS instruments as they should (except they don't seem to want to let strings play their first note as pizz. Must be a new rule in music.) So far, I'm happy. Ron Ronald J Brown PO Box 138 Newboro ON K0G 1P0 (613) 272-3181 http://www.RonaldJBrown.com -Original Message- From: Dean M. RE: [Finale] 2006/GPO
Here's the list of strings that I took directly from MaekMusic!'s site. With Finale: Viola Solo Viola: Player 1 Viola: Player 2 Viola: : Player 3 Cello: : Modern Solo Cello: : Player 1 Cello: : Player 2 Cello: : Player 3 Bass: : Solo Bass: Player 1 Solo Bass: Player 2 Bass: Player 2 Full Strings: Arco Full Strings: Pizzicato Full Strings: Tremolo Violin 1 Section: Arco Violin 1 Section: Pizzicato Violin 1 Section: Tremolo Viola Section: Arco Viola Section: Pizzicato Viola Section: Tremolo Cello Section: Arco Cello Section: Pizzicato Cello Section: Tremolo Bass Section: Arco Bass Section: Pizzicato Bass Section: Tremolo Violin: Solo Violin: Player 1 Violin: Player 2 Violin: Player 3 Here's what MakeMusic! says comes with full GPO: 1st Violin Section (12 Players) 2nd Violin Section (10 Players) Double Bass Section (7 Players) Solo Double Bass 3 Solo Gagliano Violin 3 Double Basses for Sections Solo Gofriller Cello Solo Guarneri Violin Solo Montagnana Cello Solo Pierray Cello Solo Stradivari Violin 9 Cellos for Ensembles Solo Viola 9 Violins for Ensembles Cello Section (8 Players) Viola Section (10 Players) The GPO list looks shorter, but it's not really. Solo instruments and ensembles have a "key switch" for pizz, tremolo, short bows, long bows, etc. Frankly, I would miss the Gagliano violin if I didn't have it. We will have to see what the quality of MakeMusic!'s more generic soloists are when F2006 arrives. RE: [Finale] 2006/GPO
Hi Lee, I am currently using the full GPO with Finale 2004--and I can't wait for Finale 2006. As I understand it, about 100 GPO instruments are included with F2006--and that means, to me, that they can be loaded directly from Finale. It seems that the GPO instruments missing from the cut down version for Finale are the solo instruments. Because there is not a direct link between Finale2004 and GPO, the way I proceed is to use Human Playback in Finale to record a midi, then import the midi in Cubasis VST where I can link it to GPO. The human playback expressions are carried over. I understand that will not be able to use the full GPO with Finale2006 immediately. But Gary has promised a free patch will be out soon. In other words, how much do you depend on the patches not included with the partial version for decent results? Also, does getting good results from GPO depend in some degree on using Human Playback? I tried it when it first came out and decided I could get better results doing my own "humanizing", without the performance hit (or maybe I've just spent too much time with Finale's MIDI tool over the years). RE: [Finale] midi chanels assignment
I own Finale 2004 (about to be 2006) and it supports 64 channels. Check the "midi option" settings. But 10 and 26 are drums, so 30 pitched channels are available. So 39 channels may be a pipe dream. Maybe one of the many so preoddupied with the non-Finale threads would care to coment? RE: [Finale] Is this a Finale or Sibelius list?
Okay, I seem to have started a tempest in a teapot here. I joined this list serve a week ago. There were days when all I saw where lists of Sibelius this and Sibelius that. As a newcomer I was beginning to believe this was a Sibelius list and that I had joined the wrong one. I thought, okay, this is a general music software discussion site. Then Michael Lawler and Ken Folwer complained and I realized what was wrong. I seem to have offended a great many people with my endorsement of Michael Lawler and Ken Folwer's opinions. Is this how it works here? Only well-known names are allowed to publish complaints? If anyone else does, they are "lurkers" and "thread cops"? Anyhow, let's drop the whole thing. In peace. The same people who contribute most of the Finale-related content seem to be the ones who were generating all the Sibelius-related content. Why is it, then, that people whose names I don't recognize (i.e., they don't post often, if at all) feel they have some grounds for criticizing what the people who *are* posting have chosen to discuss? If you don't like the current topics, then START A FINALE-RELATED THREAD. This even leaves aside the fact that all of that content was associated with the very relevant issue of "how does Sibelius stack up to Finale?" I am quite glad that we have Sibelius users on the list who were kind enough to respond to those of us who had specific questions about how Sibelius works. It helps us make a much more objective evaluation when we have the explanations of people who have a deep understanding of the competitor program. -- David W. RE: [Finale] Is this a Finale or Sibelius list?
Cool down, Man! I have as much right to voice my opinion as any other member of the list. I have been very active in other forums for the past several years, taking part in discussions and helping novices with their problems. Just because I'm new to this list serve does not classify me as a "lurker". But whether I have a long and honorable record as an active Finale supporter still does not give you the right to judge me. And what's the "thread cop" nonsense you're spouting? That's nonsense. If I want to read about Sibelius there are lots of places I can go to find out about the latest and greatest of that product. But this list is labeled "Finale", not "Finale and any other competing product people care to promote." The Sibelius discussion was directly related to the future of Finale and the kind of features and approach we'd like to see Finale emulate. If that's not an appropriate topic for discussion, then what is? And why is it always the lurkers who never contribute solutions to Finale problems (or contribute to the discussion in any way whatsoever) who feel entitled to come out of the woodwork to complain about allegedly off-topic discussions? RE: [Finale] Is this a Finale or Sibelius list?
I must admit, I was surprised to see all the Sibelius notes on a Finale site. It's sort of like having a site for Windows users and having it taken over by Mac users. Or GM taken over by Ford owners. I'm glad Sibelius users like their product and want to talk about it, but I am not interested in reading them either. Ron Ronald J Brown -Original Message- From: D.
