Hi Darcy, This worked for a while. Then the problem returned and would not respond to this solution. I am having serious navigation problems with 2014. It seems awfully buggy to me. Re: [Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
Hi Darcy, No, I thought this was an issue related to Finale not being thefront app, so I clicked on the Finale icon in the dock - the usual solution for the runaway playback problem. I will try this - but perhaps others have found similar horizontal navigation problems with 2014 (nothing like this ever occurred in 2012) where clicking in the horizontal scroll bar on either side of the location indicator (don't know what to call that gray thing) results in an uncontrollable jump beyond one window's worth of territory and then clicking on the other side results in the same erratic behavior in the other direction, making it maddeningly difficult to get to any location one window on either side of the location on which you are working. Similar behavior also sometimes happens using the SmartScroll app (a handy app that allows horizontal scrolling one measure at a time using Command/Option or Command/Control). In this case, Finale 2014 jumps two or more measures instead of one. If I am remembering this correctly, it happens only after Finale has been open for a while. I am working on transcribing and arranging music that requires that both Preview and Transcribe apps are open at the same time as Finale. I don't remember whether I have encountered this when only Finale is open. Anyway, your ideas are always helpful, so any light you can shed will be appreciated. Meanwhile, I'll try the white space menu bar click to see if that works. Thank you, Darcy. Hi Darcy, Just looked for this: From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. Choose Accessibility. Click the Mouse Options button. Hi Darcy, Not sure if iKey does all that QuicKeys can do (and I have inherited many well constructed shortcuts from my engraver friend, Greg Hamilton in Vancouver) even though QuicKeys has (theoretically, at least) not been supported for OSX… for years. The shortcuts and macros seem to still work, and I am pretty dependent on them. If iKey will really do all that QuiKeys can do, it would be worth building all those things again. Meanwhile, SmartScroll and clicking in the scroll bar on either side of the cursor (couldn't remember that word in our earlier correspondence - that's what aging will do to your brain!) works just fine, as long as Finale is behaving itself. If I simply have to quit and restart Finale more often, I guess that will have to do until this bug is killed. Good to be in contact with you again. We will be in NY when I am judging the Essentially Ellington competition next month (5/7-10 and then staying a few days). Maybe we will have a chance to visit. Re: [Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
In my case, I think the hairpins went to beat 4 (not literally to the edge of the measure), but maybe that is what you mean. And it doesn't screw up on all of them -- just some of them. But it makes such a mess that you can't really use the tool. I cannot recall whether this was broken at the base 2014 level of whether the A patch broke it. Does anybody have a recollection of that? Is there an easy way to back off the A patch, short of wiping out the installation and reinstalling again? It surely seems that 3 months ought to be enough time for the company to fix some of these bugs. On 4/5/2014 12:45 PM, Chuck Israels wrote: Yes, there are bugs. Re: [Finale] Any idea if/when there will be a patch B for 2014?
It really is a shame because 2014 is a good release in many respects. The Windows version has caused me relatively few problems, but this smart copy one is enough to drive one batty. I had hoped they had turned the corner after taking so much time to get 2014 out. I compare Finale with Cakewalk. I am a regular Sonar user. There are many similarities between the companies. Both have been around decades and have a large, loyal, extremely forgiving user base. Both companies got into financial difficulties and went through massive ownership changes. In Cakewalk's case, they were acquired by Roland for a number of years. During that time, they tried to advance the state of the art with their X1 and X2 platforms. Those packages were impressive, but so loaded with bugs they lost many users and couldn't attract new users. Their ownership thought the path forward was to keep developing new stuff and not attend to the bugs. It really came almost to riot proportions among the user base. There were many good people at Cakewalk, just as I am sure the same is true of Finale. And I'm sure none of them felt good about having such a poor quality product on the market. That didn't really change until Gibson bought Cakewalk. That was about the time that they released X3. While X3 continued strong technology leadership, there was clearly a huge effort put into cleaning up long-standing bugs. Most notably, in the 6 months that X3 has been out, there have been 5 major patch levels. There are still a few bugs, of course, but the user base is wildly enthusiastic now and actively recommending the product to colleagues. I'm not saying that a product must have one big patch release every 30 days, but a product with as many issues as Finale really deserves more than one patch release in 5 months.
