Indeed -- it is amazing that they can spend time on importing audio and allowing us to work with video but they can't institute this simple beaming rule. And as you say it is cut-and-dried. How hard would it be for Finale to incorporate an additional dialog into the time signature dialog, something reachable by an OPTIONS button, which would have a couple of places where we could specify beaming patterns for 8ths and for 16ths and for 32nds? Of course, you can't market that since it would be an admission of a previous shortcoming, so it has to take a back seat to the more marketable phrases such as The ONLY notation program that allows you to import audio data to incorporate in your scores! -- David H. Or just a check box in the Beaming Options, as they do for 4 eighths in 4/4. Christopher ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Finale's beaming feels neglected to me. It does a lot, but there's still some very basic things it misses. I've forgotten the details, but I remember there's a situation with secondary beams going over a rest where there's no way to get it right without elaborate kludges. That one has bit me several times. mdl ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Beaming 6 8th notes
How do you beam together 6 eighth notes in ¾ meter in a continuous left hand pattern? I can do it manually, but wonder if there is a way to do it automatically. If I beam the six 8th notes copy the measure, it breaks the beams into quarter note values. (I do know how to beam 4 8th notes in common time, but I need to beam 6 8th notes in ¾ time.) Depending on which version of Finale you are using, you can set beam edits to copy along with the notes and preserve your manual beam edits. This will not work at all if you are copying partial measures, though. Another way to do it (though I wouldn't do it this way) is to set the time signature to be 1 dotted half instead of 3/4, and use the Display As to make it show as 3/4 anyway. Then the eighths will all beam to the bar instead of to the beat. This will also make slash notation show up as one slash per bar, too, but if you aren't using slash notation then this won't bother you. Well, that isn't a great choice, as it will cause 16th notes to be beamed incorrectly. Better is to select the measures with the pattern and choose BEAM TO TIME SIGNATURE, and then select 1 dotted half per measure as the time signature. I still am annoyed that Finale is not smart enough to beam correctly, as the rules are pretty cut-and-dried (beam 3/4 in 6 8ths, but break 16ths and all smaller values on the quarter). -- David W.
