[Finale] Document Styles

2009-01-22 Thread Johannes Gebauer
I have only just had a brief look at Fin2k9. I jumped from 2k7, so there
are a few new things to learn.

Is it true that Document Styles can only be applied to New Documents? Or
is there a way to apply an existing style to an existing document?

Otherwise I can't really see the point of it, all it really does is use
different documents as Default Docs, no? I was hoping to get something
like house styles in Sibelius. Oh well.

considered having them as separate docs (several page sizes and score
styles will be used throughout the work). was hoping to be able to
set up a doc style and as i change / update it, have it update all

2012-09-17 Thread Neal Gittleman
Greetings…

I think I know the answer to this question, but…

FinMac 2012b.r1 running Mountain Lion 10.8.1

I'm working on a project putting an orchestral accompaniment around a
pre-existing big band arrangement. One of the big band members created their
parts and sent me the file, and I'm added the orchestra parts around it. His
stuff is in the Handwritten Style and I usually do the orchestral parts in
Engraved Style.

So…

Is it possible to mix those styles -- putting the band's stuff in the
Handwritten Style they're used to and the orchestra's in the Engraved Style
they're used to? I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is "no", but I figure
just because I can't find a way to do it doesn't necessarily mean it can't be
done…

Any sage advice would be appreciated!

Johannes,

You are correct. You can use different docs as default docs. That's
the only new thing.

But you can save ONE library that has a whole crapload of settings
and import it into an existing document. Some things won't change
(like fonts of text blocks, characters in articulations, etc.) but
it's a start.

You can also copy the old document INTO a new document, thus using
the settings of the new doc. I find this useful for preserving my
metatool assignments, though I have to reformat the parts completely,
and I still have to swap out articulations and expressions manually
(WHY isn't this easier? I would LOVE to be able to select ALL of the
old articulations, delete them with one keystroke, and when Finale
tells me that this articulation is in use and would I like to replace
it, IT ACTUALLY TELLS ME WHAT ARTICULATION IT IS! Sheesh! Would that
be so hard to code?)

Another new thing that simplifies my life immensely is replacing
articulations in specific passages. If you select several
articulations at once across several notes or staves, then double-tap
the metatool key for the new articulation, they switch! Like I want
to change the staccato to a tenuto, I select all the staccatos, hit E
twice, and they are all magically tenutos now!

There ARE libraries of things that can be loaded, and Patterson's

yeah, in the end i'm just going to try and keep them all in one doc
ordered by page format. there are many advantages, like the
expression categories etc.; and not having to export / import. pain
in the arse to have to set the page size manually several times to
print, but this will be easier to manage the notational issues
perhaps.

Your problem appears to be similar to an oddity in my installations of FM2011
on my 2 OS10.6.4 Macs.

Only the very application Finale 2011 goes to the applications’s folder.

The Finale 2011 folder sits in a Library folder in what is called
klaussmedgaardbjerre’s personal computer, where it cannot be searched by
Finder’s search function.

FM2011 works for me but for the fact that I cannot create new documents with
the set-up wizard. My work-around is working from a template, which I can
expand by means of the set-up wizard.

As I see it this is bug in FM2011.

Re: [Finale] document styles?

2010-07-25 Thread Florence + Michael
This is a recognised bug in Finale 2011. The configuration files have a new
location in Finale 2011. Finale should copy all the necessary files to
~user/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/Finale 2011/ but in some cases this
doesn't work correctly. To make things worse, there are several pages in the
manual that still give the old location (I've alerted MakeMusic about this).

The solution is to be found here:

http://makemusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4085/

Download the "copyFinale2011files.tool" from the link on that page and run it.

All the best,

Re: [Finale] Document Styles

2012-09-17 Thread Christopher Smith
Yes, it's possible, but I can tell you I sure wouldn't want to do it!

You can set staves to have an independent notehead font, you can import another
set of articulations (and re-assign all the metatools for them), you can set
different regions for bar numbers, you can set different staff lists for
different rehearsal letters, you might have to hide time and key sigs and then
add them in as expressions, oy, the list goes on!

What might be a better idea is for you to do the score in the Handwritten
Style, then copy everything to a new Engraved Style document to create the
parts. Many things will change automatically (key and time sigs, noteheads,
measure numbers, etc.) and you can convert any expressions to the engraved
style fonts using the Font Utilities. YOu might have some surgery to do on
Smart Shapes as well.

Only the conductor will see the score as all handwritten, while the orchestra
musicians would get the parts from the new file.

[Finale] Document styles vs. templates

2012-06-27 Thread Lee Actor
I'm trying to assess the relative merits of using document styles for
starting new projects in Fin2012b as opposed to templates.

I used the Setup Wizard to create a new orchestral score (also a customized
Ensemble), imported all my settings, artics, expressions, etc., then
painstakingly edited all the staff and group names and positions as I prefer
and saved the whole thing as a new document style. But if I try to create a
new score using this document style and the setup wizard, all the staff and
group editing is gone. Of course, if I create the new score directly from a
template, all the staff and group changes are there.

It seems to me that going the template route will save a lot more time, even
if I have to add or remove some instruments and redo the scaling. Am I
missing something with document styles?
