RE: [Finale] WinFin 2010a Crash
And now I tried to open a file that I am pretty sure was created with 2010 that worked fine but contained no falls. Just adding one fall to an arbitrary note caused the playback to hang and Finale to crash...oh happy day :-( /D -Original Message- From: finale-boun...@shsu.edu [mailto:finale-boun...@shsu.edu] On Behalf Of Dan Tillberg Sent: den 25 november 2009 21:57 To: finale@shsu.edu Subject: RE: [Finale] WinFin 2010a Crash OK, but you need to add 2 falls (by using the glissando tool) in the file to trigger the bug. AND SOMETHING ELSE: I now feel even more certain that this bug is introduced in Finale 2010a (or perhaps 2010). I just opened a file that was created in Finale 2007 (also containing falls), let Finale do the conversion to 2010a, and now that file shows exactly the same behaviour. Can't be listened to. I know this file was fine when publishing that version - for sure. RE: [Finale] WinFin 2010a Crash
OK, spent some hours nailing down the error. I tried the Data check utility, but that didn't change anything. Turning off the HP did it. But why? After some experimenting I found that the problem seems to be related to falls/trills, but not in a way that seems logic. After having removed more and more in the original file, I came down to an example which works for me to play. Adding a fall anywhere with the glissando tool is OK, BUT adding a second fall anywhere hangs the playback which is exactly the original problem. So I guess that this small file is corrupt in some way. I know this is not firsthand a bug reporting forum, but I would like to learn any tricks to "clean" a file so that it can be used. To create a new file does not seem to be very attractive since the full version of the original file had final-edited parts, and that work took about 6 hours...so I am not keen of redoing the whole thing. Better to turn off HP for the next version in that case. Also I have been working with both Finale 2007 and Finale 2010, using trills and falls quite extensively; so I am a bit curious whether this behaviour is caused by a bug introduced in Finale 2010a. But any contribution is welcome, so anyone who likes to solve mysteries...please :-) The test file can be downloaded here: http://www.tillberg.org/download/Finale/Test6.mus Make sure you have other work saved, because testing the file the way described here might case Finale to hang. Another thing you could try, although I can't recall if I ever heard it saving a file in your situation, is to run the Data Check and let Finale try to find and fix the problems. You could also experiment with turning off Human Playback and seeing if the raw data plays fine without the HP turned on. If that's the case, then there may be some expression defined for playback which is causing the problem. Perhaps one which you "created" by duplicating an existing one which had playback defined and then editing the text and forgetting about the playback aspect and it might be in conflict with some other nearby command. -- David H.
