Re: [Finale] placing a natural sign in microsoft word file

2010-03-22 Thread Noel Stoutenburg

Martin,

Though you don't specify what you're using to produce the prefatory
material, if you're using a word processor, you may well find that there
is a mechanism within the word processor for generating a symbol. In
Wordperfect, three of the available symbols which can be inserted into a
document are a flat, a sharp, and a natural.

If you are producing the prefatory material as a Finale text block,
since Finale 2000, there has been at least one manner of shifting the
baseline so as to move the baseline of a character up or down without
moving the size of the item. If you want to do it as you go, highlight
the natural sign, select the "text" option in the menu bar, and from the
drop down menu select "baseline shift". If you want to make all the
adjustments at once after you've finished completed the editing, you can
also find the "baseline shift" menu item subsidiary to the "text item"
in the "edit text" dialog box.

In Word I went to Insert--> symbol and found it. That slot says that
Alt+0206 also places that character but when I do that a slightly different
natural sign is inserted. I don't know why that is. In Word, Font-->
Character Spacing can adjust up or down, also.

For future reference, there's an easy font called MusiQwik.

I use this font for short classroom-style examples that don't require chords.
It's not especially handsome, but it works easily in Word.

In my version of Word (2000), I can use Format/Character... and there's
a tab there where I can set how high/low I want the selected character.

In Word, or in layout programs, you should be able to tweak the size and
position of that character to get it exactly where you want it. You say
"superscript", for example, but in Word, in addition to the defined
Superscript character attribute, I can specify exactly how many points I
want the character raised above the normal baseline. I can do the same
in something like InDesign.

Another option would be using the EngraverTextT or EngraverTextH fonts
that come with Finale. These are intended for mixing text and musical
signs, so that the symbols are sized closer to text at the same point
size. So a 12-point n in one of these fonts gives you a natural sign
that fits pretty well with 12-point text. (EngraverTextT has numerals
from Times, while H has numerals from Helvetica. I think there's also an
NCS with numerals from New Century Schoolbook. The musical symbols,
taken from Engraver rather than Maestro, look the same in all of them.)

In either case, you're probably going to have to play with line spacing.
Either of these solutions will likely make your application want to
allot more vertical space to the line with a music character. If you've
got a 1-line bit of text that you're placing somewhere, this won't
matter, but in a paragraph you'll need to apply manual spacing to get
all the lines the same height.
