Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
Thanks Mark, Problems now solved. The main problem was my stupidity in taking on a short notice job and trying to do it in a program I had had for only a couple of hours. The job was done on time and, after a few initial frustrations, worked well. Thanks to all who helped me on that stressful evening. Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
Hi Darcy, Yes, I know that and I really don't mind being told to RTFM - that's the advice I would give anyone, but given that I need to get these things done for tomorrow (it's 1.00am here now) I was hoping that someone could give me a quick fix on this particular point. As I said, I'm sure that in a couple of week's time when I've done a bit more reading and a bit more experimenting, I'll wonder what my problem was. Certainly the new programme (to me) seems quite exciting, especially so having come to it directly from Fin2006 without the intervening upgrades. So much of it is new to me. I'm off to bed now - I'll do the others tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help. Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
Actually you can add "in C" to a text box that is set to be hidden in all part(s) except the one(s) you specify. You can also add staves that are linked to additional parts, but are not visible in the score, then just copy everything over from e.g., the "in C" staff to the "in Bb" staff. Lawrence, I know no one likes to be told to R(ead) T(he) F(inale) M(anual), but seeing as you're new to linked parts, you are definitely going to be extremely frustrated unless you read the Linked Parts section of the documentation, which is actually quite clear and helpful. Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
Hi, Yes, I tried making the text block wider and that didn't work either. I've just made another new file (a little more complicated) in 2012 and it's perfectly ok, everything works. It's only in the files made in Fin2006 that have the problem. I think that's where my answer lies. -- Lawrenceyates.co.uk ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Just for reference, they look the same because they /are/ the same. Even if you choose not to use linked parts, when you extract parts Finale creates linked parts behind the scenes and then saves the linked part as a separate file. No - you can specify the part label as you you want it (and different from the Staff Name) from the Mange Parts window. Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
I just tried extracting a part in Fin (Mac) 2012. It looks exactly the same as the linked part, so yes, you must be doing something wrong. Can't say what it might be. Are the parts displayed correctly in the Score Manager? Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
Hi, that's exactly what I'm trying to do. The cursor is after the text block. I can put what I like after the title, but not after the part name. It's also sticking the composer/arranger name somewhere off the page and I have to move it manually to where it should be. I appreciate that all this is almost certainly my fault, not Finale's and that in a couple of weeks I'll wonder what the problem was. Unfortunately, I have to have all this done for tomorrow. :-) I'll finish the one I'm doing now then go back to Fin2006 for the rest and drag them through Fin2012 to generate pdf's from the parts. I hope the people I'm doing this for understand the old rule - "good; quick; cheap - choose any two" Thanks for you suggestions, Cheers, Lawrence On 14 December 2011 23:44, Aaron Sherber wrote: > On 12/14/2011 6:37 PM, Lawrence Yates wrote: > > Just done that but when I try to add "in Bb" or "in C" after it, it > > disappears and I have to start again. > > Well, like any text insert, if you're adding text you have to make sure > your cursor is after the insert -- otherwise you're going to overwrite > it. Well, like any text insert, if you're adding text you have to make sure your cursor is after the insert -- otherwise you're going to overwrite it. Also, this is going to cause problems with linked parts, because the parts are all sharing the same text box -- they can't have different text. The only way this will work is if you have the text box with just the insert, then you extract parts, then add the 'in C' to the extracted parts. thanks Aron, Just done that but when I try to add "in Bb" or "in C" after it, it disappears and I have to start again. I must be honest, I'm about to throw the computer at the wall. I'm going to have one more go, then I'm off back to Finale 2006 which worked perfectly. You need to create a text box on your score, and in the text box use the text insert which says "Score/Part Name". Now if you look at your parts, they will automatically have the correct name. Re: [Finale] Beginner's woes
Hi Jari, Thanks, but I need to save separate files from which I will both print parts and save to pdf. I also need to produce three copies of each part for instruments in C, Bb and Eb. There are 17 parts for each piece and there are 12 pieces. I am working through them writing the instrument name on every part individually and I am going to be all night doing it at this rate. I cannot believe that Finale would produce parts without the part name on them. Surely I am doing something wrong?
