Re: [Finale] Multiple Time Sigs]

2005-01-23 Thread Don Hart
Hi Scott,

Thanks for your help. That's the look I want but it would obviously be
better if it could be accomplished in a time signature w/out the help of an
expression. I experimented with using some other expressions instead of the
time signature plus sign, but as far as I can tell, any item used in that
slot simply moves the second signature over to the right.

For the time being I guess I'll be using your solution.

Re: [Finale] Multiple Time Sigs

2005-01-22 Thread Don Hart
Thanks, Scott - that's helpful to know. When I first tried it I didn't like
how close the two signatures were to each other (looked like a time sig. of
93/84), but I enlarged the font size of the space to make it look right.

Gardner Read refers to this and similar situations as combined meters (p.
166 of "Music Notation") and puts the second signature in parentheses, or in
the case of 6/8 and 3/4, for example, separates them with an equal sign.

So, is there a way to do this totally within Finale's time signature and not
resort to also using an expression? I tried briefly to do this and didn't
really come up with anything.

Thanks,

Don Hart

The easiest way to do it is to create a time signature of 9/8 + 3/4 and
then go in and change the + to a blank character. That will remove it
and also remove the space between the two time signatures and make it
look how you want it to be.

I thought of creating an expression for the second one (REALLY large
parentheses, and not in Maestro).
Good approach, specially if you're using Fin2005. Create the time sig
in the shape designer, put it in the score as a measure expression
(reference it horizontally from the beginning of the music, for
example) and in the measure attributes for that measure, add the extra
space needed at the start of measure.

If you do this properly, you never have to worry about spacing or
other side-effects.

Or, after inserting your double time sig, you can then define the following
measures as 3/4 or 9/8, as appropriate, and then use the Measure Tool to
hide all time sigs in those measures. So the 9/8 bars will actually *be*
9/8 bars, not 3/4 bars with triplets with hidden numbers. This has the
advantage of making it slightly easier to enter notes, since you don't need
to worry about entering the triplets as triplets.

I thought of creating an expression for the second one (REALLY large
parentheses, and not in Maestro). It would also be necessary, I think,
to do the 9/8 bars with triplets with none of the markings showing. No
brackets, little 3's, etc.
How say you, colleagues?

I was going to post some alternate suggestions, but as I was typing them
into this message, I realized that what you have come up with is
probably the best way of doing things to get proper appearance and
proper playback.

I would only add that you can configure the default appearance of
triplets before you begin to enter the notes and set things so that no
bracket and no number shows up, to make life easier.
