[Fink-devel] Webpage languages
Hi all, The translated versions of the Fink webpage are outdated. For example, the last news on the French version: http://www.finkproject.org/index.php?phpLang=fr is more than three years old 2012-04-09. In addition, the « Status » sections does not mention 10.8, nor 10.9. Both the news and the status section are in english anyway. Users who have set their system in French land automatically on the French version of the page. From what they see on the webpage they may think that the project is dead. Since nobody seems to translate the pages anymore, I wonder if we should continue having versions in languages other than english. [Fink-devel] Download statistics on a package
Dear all, The upstream developers of one my package would like to have some statistics on their users (number, country, etc...). They have a tracker on their download site so they can in principle know how many Fink user are using it (providing that Fink declares itself as a download agent when downloading the source, which I think it does). However, since the source is copied to our mirrors and since Fink uses this mirror by default, this only gives a lower limit on the number of users. Is there another way to get some statistics on a package usage? Cheers, Sébastien -- Everyone hates slow websites. So do we. [Fink-devel] How to make Fink more user friendly?
Hi all, I spent most of this morning trying to install Fink on one of my colleague computer. This made me realize how complicated it is for the end-user. Pretty much everything that could get wrong actually got wrong: 1 - It took us a while to get the correct XCode version for 10.6 on Apple developer website 2 - When we finally got the correct version, it failed to install because of this bug: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/45841/xcode-4-2-snow-leopard-doesnt-install 3 - Once we finally got Xcode installed, we installed Fink and we had to fight with proxy settings to get through my institute firewall. The default selfupdate (through rsync) would not work, and we had to switch to selfupdate-cvs. 4 - We tried to build a software package (gildas) that depends on many others (gtk+2, gcc4.6) and this failed because of libraries in /usr/local 5 - Now with /usr/local out of the way the compilation goes on but it will probably take a few more hours. A regular user would probably had given up before having Fink working. Therefore I think need to think about ways to make this easier for the end user. We've been discussing for a long time about distributing pre-compiled packages; we use to have a binary distribution but it has not been updated since 10.5. I understand that it is a lot of work for a single person to build all the packages to make a binary distribution. Another option would be that each package maintainer builds the package he/she maintains, signs it, and upload it on a server somewhere (that's what Debian is doing, I think). How difficult would it be to have something similar for Fink ? [Fink-devel] "Status" on Fink webpage
Dear all, I found the "Status" section on the Fink webpage a bit confusing. It says that Fink 0.9.0 was released on 25 June 2008, and that this version is intended for 10.5 users. New users don't know that Fink 0.9.0 is a binary release, and that there are much more recent source releases. At a first sight, they may think that Fink development has ceased, which of course is not the case. I would suggest to mention the source release before the binary release in this section. In fact, since we hadn't had any binary release in more than three years and that the binary version works on 10.5 only (which makes the source install the de-facto standard method for fink installation), I wonder if we should mention the binary release in this section at all. Hello, For about 6 months at the end of 2005, the numpy package was called scipy core. That's the name we picked up for the fink package when numpy/scipy-core was first packaged. In order to avoid confusing users any longer, I'd like to rename the scipy-core-py package to numpy-py. For this I propose the following path: 1 - Revise scipy-core-py (1.3.0-4) so that its depends on fink- obsolete-packages and that it conflicts/replaces numpy-py (>= 1.3.0-4) 2 - Create a numpy-py package (1.3.0-4) based on scipy-core-py and that conflicts/replaces scipy-core-py 3 - Modify all packages that depends on scipy-core-py that they depend on numpy-py (>= 1.3.0-4) and bump all revision numbers. All the packages will need to be modified at the same time to avoid breakages. [Fink-devel] Atlas bug on 10.4/PPC ?
The programs bellow fails to link against lapack library from the atlas package: % gfortran -L/sw/lib -llapack -lcblas -lf77blas -latlas test_dgesv.f /usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols: ___powisf2 referenced from liblapack expected to be defined in libgcc ___powidf2 referenced from liblapack expected to be defined in libgcc collect2: ld returned 1 exit status This is with gcc43 4.3.3-1000 and atlas 3.8.2-2 on MacOS 10.4.11 PPC. The powisf2 and powidf2 symbol are defined in /sw/lib/gcc4.3/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib. Indeed the program links fine if one add -lgcc_s.1 to the link command: % gfortran -L/sw/lib -llapack -lcblas -lf77blas -latlas -lgcc_s.1 test_dgesv.f Why does this library need to be added by hand? [Fink-devel] Python documentation
Hi, I have noticed that currently no documentation is installed with python23 package. The Doc/ directory of the python distribution is simply copied to /sw/share/doc/python, one can build it using the Makefile in this directory. It is not straightforward however, since one of the include file is missing, and some additional packages are needed to build the documentation (e.g. perl, tetex, latex2html, etc.) I was thinking of providing a package which build and install the python documentation. This may come as a splitoff of python23 package, or as a different package. I see a difficulty: python documentation is available in many formats: html, ps, pdf, info, and for the paper versions in a4 and letter format. How can this be handled ? Of course we could build and install the documentation in all formats, but this would use quite a lot of space. We could also provide splitoffs or variants of the packages for the different formats or provide only some of them. As an example, Debian provides a python-doc package containing the html and info documentations. Please let me know what you think. yorick already has a fink maintainer, david munro.. it wasn't moved to the 10.3 tree since it didn't work. Since it does now, it can just be updated. See: http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/yorick David Munroe stopped to maintain this package for some time. I submitted one month ago a new version for 10.3, which is still under validation. There is no such thing as libm on any OS X. libm is just a symlink to libSystem, the standard system library. What bug are you referring to? From the REAME file of Yorick, the package I'm working on: Apple shipped MacOS X 10.3 (Panther) with a bug in the system math library libm (part of /usr/lib/LibSystem.dylib) which can cause the functions sqrt, sinh, tanh, asinh, acosh, and atanh to malfunction, when floating point exceptions are unmasked. Yorick is one of the few (perhaps the only) code which unmasks SIGFPE, so that the CPU will actually generate SIGFPE signals. Yorick does not use asinh, acosh, or atanh. For tanh, the buggy system library causes SIGFPE for any argument, e.g.- tanh(2). For sqrt, the situation is more complicated: The system library calls the hardware fsqrt instruction for CPUs which have it, which gives correct results, but for CPUs which do not have the fsqrt instruction, the system library calls a buggy software sqrt, which causes SIGFPE for any argument, e.g.- sqrt(2). Thus, yorick's sqrt works on G5 machines, but fails on G4 machines and earlier architectures. (In fact, yorick will not even start on a G4 under MacOS 10.3, since there are a couple of sqrt calls in the startup code.) Apple introduced the bug with 10.3.0, and it is present in 10.3.1 and 10.3.2, and likely will be present in 10.3.3. Darwin developers know of this problem, and agree that it is a bug in Libm-47. There is a chance it will be corrected by 10.3.4. It seems to be corrected in 10.3.4. This alternate version contains non-functional stubs for the file compression and uncompression routines used by CFITSIO.
