Re: [Fink-devel] "WARNING: Unable to parse ..." after upgrade

2003-11-20 Thread Rob Braun
You're right, it probably should. What is currently
in 0.17.1 should work with virtually all versions of rsync
(as long as 'rsync' is really rsync). But, an explicit path
is more reliable.

Yes, we found a solution which uses /usr/bin/rsync, and that's the one
which was put into fink-0.17.1.

Really fink should not be calling 'rsync'. It should be using
/usr/bin/rsync in any case, just like every single other external call
in fink does. I see no reason to deviate and trust whatever program a
user has that might be called rsync.

Hi Max. Yes, we found the same thing this afternoon, and the fix is in
CVS (both HEAD and branch_0_17).

So it does not delete anything although it should. It seems the syntax
of selfupdate-rsync does not work with older versions of rsync (older
than the one in Panther). Even killing the fink rsync package will not
be sufficient on 10.2.8. The selfupdate-rsync command itself has to be
fixed.

If that is the case, indeed the selfupdate-rsync code should be fixed.
While we can provide an updated rsync package, I wouldn't want to turn
it into an essential package, unless we absolutely have to.

I'd recommend against doing that simply because the rsync folks tend
to release a burst of new versions that will take some time before
they show up in OS X.

And on 10.2.8, Apple shipped rsync 2.5.2. I very much would prefer if

Weird. The only explanation I have is that you are doing
selfupdate-rsync with only the stable tree enabled, so that the old
cruft in unstable is not updated. What are your Distribution and
Trees lines in /sw/etc/fink.conf?

For example, xplanet-0.95-12 has disappeared from all the unstable
trees on cvs and on rsync on 11/08/03. The parse bugs in the same
file in the stable trees have been fixed on the same day.

Boom... VERY different. Deleted many things.

No errors either, now.

OK... that's the problem. The "rsync" package in fink is broken.
Please make a note of that.

If you want to test this, you could move this remporarily out of the way
so that /usr/bin/rsync is used and look if the selfupdate works
differently then.

Otherwise I will have to leave this problem to the rsync buffs
(bbraun?), because the syntax of the selfupdate-rsync command has become
so complicated that I don't know whether the --delete-after can still do
what it is supposed to do.
