[Fink-users] X11 and 8-bit color

2003-02-20 Thread R R
Hi everyone,

I have some old X11 apps which need 8-bit color. Is it possible to do
so using Apples X11. I looked under preferences for X11 and the only
options are 1000s and millions. I also tried setting the Aqua color
depth to 256 colors but then X11 would not open any terminals.

Thanks - Ram

I don't think so. But you'd probably be better off asking such questions
on Apple's x11-users mailing list. There are a couple of Apple guys

[Fink-users] Installing KDE apps from tar files.

2003-02-20 Thread Rich Warren
I've downloaded the source code to several non-fink KDE applications, and
tried to compile them by hand.

I've already installed KDE 3.1 from fink unstable. So I should have the QT
libraries. However, on every file I try to compile I am getting the
following errors...

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.2) (headers and
libraries) not found. Please check your installation!

Do I need to set an environment variable so that other files can find the
fink-installed library?

Re: [Fink-users] proftpd 1.8rc2

2003-02-20 Thread Justin Hallett
well I don't know what to say but there is something wrong with your
configuration finle if you can run the daemon.

watch if it's set for inetd this is what should happen.

justin@bkhs18sky11va [~]$ sudo proftpd
Password:
bkhs18sky11va.ab.hsia.telus.net - fatal: Socket operation on non-socket
bkhs18sky11va.ab.hsia.telus.net - (Running from command line? Use
`ServerType standalone' in config file!)

so there is a problem in your config.

also if you have this file

ls /sw/var/proftpd/proftpd.scoreboard

try erasing it, if you don't have it try a sudo touch, if the dir doesn't
exist just sudo mkdir it. other then that try the proftpd list, cause it's
in your config.

Re: [Fink-users] doxygen failure install kivio (koffice) packages

2003-02-20 Thread David R. Morrison
Hi Martin. I eventually realized that doxygen had its own internal libpng,
and I asked one of the folks who is having trouble to generate a session
log of fink trying to build doxygen on his system and send it to me...
Unfortunately, it is identical to my own session log until the failure
occurs.

The only thing I can think of is that somehow ld is implicitly searching
someplace like /usr/local/lib and these folks have a /usr/local/lib/libpng.dylib
Moreover, they have a broken one, which doesn't properly link libz.

The solutions I've thought of involve modifying the Makefile, so that
either ../libs/libpng.a is linked in explicitly, or we add -L/sw/lib
and let it link to the fink-installed libpng.dylib.

For most KDE apps, you will usually need to:

1. untar the kde-admindir tarball into your app's source directory (if
you've built kde from 3.1 in unstable, it should be
/sw/src/kde-admindir-20030209.tar.bz2)

2. run "make -f admin/Makefile.common cvs"

3. run configure with the options "--with-qt-dir=/sw
--with-qt-includes=/sw/include/qt"

I actually use the following script when I'm doing a new KDE port by
hand:

That's right. Instructions for switching with are available at

One thing to keep in mind is that Apple's X11 is still in beta, so there
are still bugs to be worked out. XDarwin is much more mature and
stable.

This sounds like a good idea. We had this in other contexts that -lfoo
is not the best way of linking to a static archive, because the linker
always prefers dylibs if it can find one.

or we add -L/sw/lib
and let it link to the fink-installed libpng.dylib.

But you never know if /usr/local/lib comes before or after /sw/lib.

Of course, it would be good to know if /usr/local/lib was (once again)
the culprit here.

Actually, I asked because there was a problem that afflicted an earlier
version of doxygen, but now there's a different problem for
doxygen-1.3-1 which doesn't affect everybody.

If it's any help I was able to build doxygen-1.3-1 with no problems, and
I do have /usr/local/lib on my system, but all that's in it are symlinks
for libdl (to keep OpenOffice from installing its own version of
dlcompat there).

Re: [Fink-users] doxygen failure install kivio (koffice) packages

2003-02-20 Thread David R. Morrison
Here's why I suspect /usr/local/lib/libpng.dylib :

The collection of X11-related packages on OpenDarwin which was posted
just after the first beta release of X11.app included a package for
libpng (we'd call it libpng3 in fink) which installs in /usr/local.

That package compiles libpng-1.2.5 exactly as in the old Fink packages,
and in particular, is broken in the same way they were (because of a
missing -lz on the link line). I fixed this in Fink when it came to
my attention a few weeks back; I'm just about to file a bug against
the Darwinports package and see if we can get it fixed there as well.

But the damage is done, if users already installed the broken package
in /usr/local/lib and it's being found by the linker.

More or less: people have problems not infrequently when /usr/local/lib

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Doxygen-1.3-2 should fix this problem (it makes doxygen compile against
the fink-installed libpng, rather than the libpng built during the
doxygen compile).

If selfupdate-cvs doesn't give you 1.3-2 yet, get it from the package
submission tracker on SourceForge.

(I'd been struggling with this for weeks, but was able to help the
package maintainer narrow down the problem.)

Start it from the command line as "texmacs", so that it doesn't run in
the background and you can stop it with ctrl-C. I confirm Alexander's
observation. Two ctrl-C's make the image insert and texmacs continue.
Weird. Some gs-8.0 bug, most likely.

[Fink-users] Mac OSX Authoring Opportunity

2003-02-20 Thread Cunningham Andy
Greetings, Fink users.

I ran across an interesting opportunity that I thought that someone one this
list may find intriguing. A local publishing company is seeking an
individual to write a book on OSX. This book would focus on the more
technical aspects of the OS. He would like for this to be geared toward
power users or administrators. The book would be part of a series of
existing volumes known as the "Power Pack" series.

I have no idea of what the compensation/payment schedule for this project
may be. I am only relaying what I have been told thus far. If you are
interested in such an opportunity, the representative's contact information
is as follows:

Steve Hayes
Sr. Acquisitions Editor -- Wiley Publishing

I hope that someone finds this to be useful! Now, carry on with your
Finking!

Andrew Cunningham

P.S.-- I apologize if this message is too off-topic for this list. Please
don't ban me! :)

[Fink-users] horde+imp or other webmail packages?

2003-02-20 Thread Robert Bruce Findler
Hi all,

I would like to be able to set up a webmail server on my mac. I
didn't see hode+imp from my search of dselect and the fink web pages
and I was wondering if there is anything that might help me. I'm hoping
for something relatively simple: I just want to be able to point it at
my imap server and not have to do much else.

tia,
Robby

PS: Thanks for all of the time and energy that's been spent on fink; it
certainly makes my mac work much better to have all these tools easily
available!

[Fink-users] orbit2 problem

2003-02-20 Thread Roy Mendelssohn
I have posted this before. Orbit2 fails to compile. The error is

checking alignment of CORBA_octet... 0
configure: error: Failed to find alignment. Check config.log for details.
### execution of ./configure failed, exit code 1
Failed: compiling orbit2-2.4.4-1 failed

I have posted before the config.log which is quite long, but these
are conflicts in how things are defined in some .h files. If any
one has any suggestions, much appreciated.

What version of tetex do you have installed? If you have version 2.0-x,
then pdflatex should have been installed by tetex-base.

Re: [Fink-users] doxygen

2003-02-20 Thread Mothra
Well im still getting the following errors trying to update my few
remaining out of date packages (doxygen is the first thing fink hits for
any of them):

make[1]: pdflatex: Command not found
make[1]: *** [doxygen_manual.pdf] Error 127
make: *** [install_docs] Error 2
### execution of make failed, exit code 2
Failed: installing doxygen-1.3-2 failed.

This is with either libpng 1.0.12.6 (from Fink) or libpng3 1.2.5-3
installed.
And I do have the Tetex 2.0-5 packages installed as well.

Everything is up to date except for doxygen and my KDE install, and this
doxygen does not want to play fair!

Dan Ridley wrote:

Doxygen-1.3-2 should fix this problem (it makes doxygen compile against
the fink-installed libpng, rather than the libpng built during the
doxygen compile).

If selfupdate-cvs doesn't give you 1.3-2 yet, get it from the package
submission tracker on SourceForge.

(I'd been struggling with this for weeks, but was able to help the
package maintainer narrow down the problem.)

Try fink reinstall tetex-base. I had the same problem with doxygen,
except that I was getting epstopdf: Command not found. After updating
to tetex 2.0 I had removed the now obsolete epstopdf package, but that
had also deleted the epstopdf file installed by tetex. Actually, I'd
recommend removing all the packages with (Obsolete) in the description,
then reinstalling tetex to avoid future problems. This seems to be a
small hiccup in the tetex 1.0 -> 2.0 upgrade procedure.

[Fink-users] openssl failed

2003-02-20 Thread Philip Mötteli
Hi

I'm sorry to already show up again with the next problem. But fink
doesn't seem to like me at the moment.
I try to compile openssl. The following errors occur:

cc -o bntest -I../include -fPIC -DTHREADS -D_REENTRANT -O3 -D_DARWIN
-DB_ENDIAN -fno-common bntest.o -L.. -lcrypto
ld: Undefined symbols:
_BN_mod
make[1]: *** [bntest] Error 1
make: *** [sub_all] Error 1
### execution of failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling openssl-0.9.6h-1 failed

I assumed, that the missing symbol comes from crypto. But there's no
error, when it compiles crypto. So this is probably a wrong assumption.
Can anybody help me?

Thanks!
Phil

It looks like there's a missing dependency in gnucash for
libghttp--install libghttp and you should be good to go.
