takes me back to the choose your data connection dialog box.

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] RFC: Installation

2008-03-06 Thread Marvin Cook
Jiri,

While I agree that most developers have the capability to unpack and add the
elements to the correct place, it is an area that prone to error. One of
the things a computer is good at is doing tedious things correctly once it
has been trained (programmed). To me, it makes more sense to train the
computer once and let it do the work than make all the users master the
tedious stuff -- again.

Dean,

I'll bet you are right, but what does this mean as more and more folks
move to VISTA, will all my users have to have admin rights to run any
software that accesses Firebird embedded? As more and more businesses
are locking down admin rights, our software opportunities will be more
and more limited :(

[Firebird-net-provider] VISTA Embedded Problem

2007-08-04 Thread Marvin Cook
Hi all,

I am developing a program using the embedded DB. When I run it on
VISTA as a user who has admin rights, it runs OK. When I run it as a
standard user, it fails to connect to the embedded DB. If I point it
to a server which is running Firebird, it works for either user. My
assumption is that the standard user is not able to load the
embeddeded dll. Any thoughts on how to solve this problem?

TIA
Marv

Bob,

 TLoadEmbeded embedded;

 embedded = new TLoadEmbeded();
  //  other stuff ...
  }
  private void Main_FormClosing(object sender, FormClosingEventArgs e)

Bob,

I have written a class that loads the FBClient.dll and its required
sister dll's.

You can download the C# code at:

Jiri,

I am using DDEXProvider-2.0.1 and can not find the path parameter in

I also downloaded the EBEmbeddedExamples and got an error that

Not much help on your problem, except that I have the identical setup

Make sure the registry paths point to where the firebird client

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] Problem creating a DataGridView

2007-04-05 Thread Marvin Cook
Carlos,

I, too, retested it and also got correct results. I am not sure what
happened, you can see from the screen capture that there was a
problem. Somehow whatever was wrong has corrected itself -- the worst
kind of problem to find.

I plan to re-install Visual Studio. I think that the problem is a
Visual Studio problem and not in the provider.

Thank you for looking into this problem. Your efforts and support are
appreciated.

Please forgive the pseudo code, but how would I modify this code to

  DataSetTableAdapters.LOCATIONSTableAdapter lota =

DataSet.LOCATIONSDataTable lodt = lota.GetDataByRID(RID);

lota.Dispose();
lodt.Dispose();

 DataSetTableAdapters.LOCATION_RIDERSTableAdapter lrta =
  new  DataSetTableAdapters.LOCATION_RIDERSTableAdapter();
DataSet.LOCATION_RIDERSDataTable lrdt = lrta.GetDataByLocation(RID);
DataSet.LOCATION_RIDERSRow row;
foreach (DataSet.LOCATION_RIDERSRow n in lrdt.Rows)

}
lrta.Update(lrdt);

In DataGridView's SmartTag isn't any table (by default). You can add
here data source (default BindingSource) and then it's all generated.

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] Problem creating a DataGridView

2007-03-31 Thread Marvin Cook
Jiri,

When I link it as you suggest, the LOCATIONS table does not show up in
the DataMember list of the bindingsource. If I try to add it
manually, I get a "Property value is not valid" dialog box.

I can add it at run time.

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] Problem creating a DataGridView

2007-03-31 Thread Marvin Cook
Jiri,

If I put the following code in the OnLoad event, I get a working DataGridView

private void LocationList_Load( object sender, EventArgs e )
{
// TODO: This line of code loads data into the
'_PTS_Fairfield_fdbDataSet.LOCATIONS' table. You can move, or remove
it, as needed.
_PTS_Fairfield_fdbDataSetTableAdapters.LOCATIONSTableAdapter
lta = new
PTS_Fairfield._PTS_Fairfield_fdbDataSetTableAdapters.LOCATIONSTableAdapter();
_PTS_Fairfield_fdbDataSet.LOCATIONSDataTable ldt = lta.GetData();
LocationsDG.DataSource = ldt;
  }
This work around will allow me to continue, but I still wonder what
the problem is.

Thanks for your help.

[Firebird-net-provider] Problem creating a DataGridView

2007-03-31 Thread Marvin Cook
Hi all,

I have a table defined by:
CREATE TABLE LOCATIONS(
  RID Integer NOT NULL,
  ACCOUNT_NUMBER TEXT50,
  ADDRESS TEXT50,
  RATE_CODE Varchar(10),
  DESCRIPTION TEXT50,
  METER_NUMBER Integer,
  CONSTRAINT PK_LOCATIONS PRIMARY KEY (RID)
);
(TEXT50 is a domain = varchar(50))

When I drag the the table from the Data Sources window to a blank form
I get the binding navigator and a "lOCATIONSDataGridView" which has no
columns defined and when I go to edit columns the table is not shown.
I can drag another table in my db to the same form and the resulting
DataGridView is OK. Where should I look for a solution to this
problem?

TIA,

Marv

1. Make sure that all your entries have the correct version number.
ie 2.0.1.0. This is easy to miss and will mess up the installation.

2. Make sure that the path to the client dll is correct ( and double slashed)

I got this error too.  I recommend that you go to the registry entries and make sure that the paths to the client are correct.  Other than that, if you are using XP, you can use a restore point to go back.  At one point, I re-installed/repaired VS.

For using classic (full)

You can also use packageless "script" to work without VS SDK.

[Firebird-net-provider] Installation FirebirdClient-2.0.1-RC1.exe

2006-09-23 Thread Marvin Cook
Hi all,I tried to upgrade to 2.0.1 and failed.  I tried everything I could think of. Process:Un-installed Firebird ClientInstalled DDEXinstalled Firebird Client 2.0.1 RC1
Changed the paths in DDEX .reg filechanged the machine.config filere-booted the machineWhen I fire up VS2005(prof), I get problem with Firebird provider.  When I try to add a new data source it errors out, I can not even add a non firebird data provider.
Fortunately, I set up a retore point before I started this trek and was able to restore back to a working version.Any ideas?MarvWindowsXP : Firebird-2.0.0.12724-0

Re: [Firebird-net-provider] Embedded server is much slower than classic/superserver

2006-09-06 Thread Marvin Cook
I am processing a dataset with 100,000 + records (around 70MB) which I select 26,000+ into a datagrid.  Works very fast.  I recomment that you read the records into a datatable and then process that table.  The reader may be buffering the data which causes more DB hits.

embedded server it became maybe 10 times slower - it takes almost 1 minuteto process 23 000 records whereas with classic version it needs a couple ofseconds. Slow is while loop.I tried different versions of server (dll lib) and of .NET provider
available on the web (including the latest ones). I tried setting FetchSizeand PacketSize in connection string that probably has no effect.My machine is quite fast - 2 processors 3.2GHz each, 3.5 GB RAM, Windows XP
Pro Sp2 fully patched.I spent hours on googling for the solution, but the only thing that I foundis the fact that embedded server fetches each row separately and classicone takes more so it doesn't waste time for communication.
I am not sure if I can do anything with this.Any ideas?TIAJarek-Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?

Carlos,I think I found the problem.  If you have a view specified in a a DataSource and try to update a record in a table referenced by that view, the update will fail with the "Update requires a valid UpdateCommand when passed DataRow collection with modified rows."
exception.  If you remove the view, the update works with the exact same code and exact same data.  If you define a new DataSource just for the view, using the same data connection, every thing seems to work OK.

the provider is not going to do so for 2 reasons:1. That didn't work with mono on linux2. The provider uses PInvoke to access the fbembeded.dll and shouldfollow the PInvoke rules.( OF course that are my personal opinions as well ;) )

@="Firebird Data Package""InprocServer32"="mscoree.dll""Class"="FirebirdSql.VisualStudio.DataTools.DataPackage""CodeBase"="C:\\Program Files\\FirebirdClient\\FirebirdSql.VisualStudio.DataTools.dll"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\Packages\{8d9358ba-ccc9-4169-9fd6-a52b8aee2d50}\SatelliteDll]"DllName"="FirebirdSql.VisualStudio.DataToolsUI.dll""Path"="C:\\Program Files\\FirebirdClient\\"
The work path had been left in the path statements.Thanks for all your hard work.MarvOn 4/13/06, Marvin Cook <

Edited the Machine.config file as directedRan the FirebirdDDEXProvider.reg (could not find the %path% but installed all in default locationI must be in the 1% because it still gets the "Failure has occurred while loading a type" error.

Hello:I have some questions for people using/testing v2.0 to answer, ifpossible, when having a little amount of free time :)
1. Do you know of any ADO.NET 2.0 feature that is missing in the provider??2. Are you having any error that is not fixed yet ??
3. Are you having performance problems ??
4. Are you using the DDEX provider to integrate it into Visual Studio2005 ??5. If you are using provider integration into Visual Studio 2005,   are you having problems with it ??6. If you are using provider integration into Visual Studio 2005,
   Are you using it with the new .NET Data Components   ( BindingSource,  BindingNavigator, ... ) ??7. Are you using the old Design-Time features ( for FbConnection,FbCommand and FbDataAdaptercomponents ) ?? ( i 'm thinking on
remove that design time support in future releases of the  v2.X)Thanks very much for your help !!!--Carlos Guzmán ÁlvarezVigo-Spain
