Turlock Show, Misc.
This message is from: Margaret Strachan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Barry and I are glad others had as much fun as we did at the Turlock Show. It was nice to see everyone, and for those who we didn't have the chance to talk to, we were the ones with the red dun mare. Barry was delighted to win or ribbon in all his classes (English, Western, and Driving) with a green, home trained horse at her second show. We are relatively recovered from the 14 hour round trip drive to Turlock. We were pleased to see a family who had visited our farm last Spring at Turlock. They had driven up from Palos Verdes in So. California and were commuting to the show from a grandmother's in Fresno--better than an hour's drive each way--just to see the Fjords. They had ridden and driven my horses and talked to Karen McCarthy and others about theirs and are smitten with the Fjords. It is good to see such nice people interested in the breed. They have other horses, but they saw the difference right away. I have not seen the stallion Gromar, but have a yearling by him out of an imported mare. The yearling, Gromarson is a very handsome, correct horse who moves like a dream. He is very kind, quiet, and willing to handle, and the other horses enjoy him too. His dam also has a very good temperament and good conformation and movement, but I think many good traits also came from his sire. We were pleased to be able to purchase him. We have a busy week next weekend as well--Bjuti, one of the other mares goes to the Riverside County Farmer's Fair for exhibit. She was requested by the fair management because she had been so popular at the Orange Show in San Bernardino--she had as much of a crowd as the Budweiser Clydesdales. The horse exhibit manager just loves her and now they want Fjords. It is good promotion for the breed as the attendance at the Orange Show was 60,000+ and the Farmer's Fair should go over 100,000 during the 9 day run. I hope all had an uneventful trip home from Turlock and that we see even more people and horses next year. Sonny
This message is from: Knutsen Fjord Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List - I want to thank all of you who have responded to support Rustenson [Sonny] and us. He seems to be doing OK, but looks so droopy and listless it breaks my heart. Whenever we're near, he trudges over and puts his head against us for loving. So I'm passing along some of the hugs and kisses that have been sent our way. It's so great to have this community to turn to! It's also wonderful to hear of everyone's driving and riding exploits. Many congrats to all of you who have put [or are putting] in the time and effort to get there. I'm eagerly awaiting completion of our facilities so that training will be so much easier. On another note, we're remodeling our house [stil] and were about to get a bid for the kitchen island/cabinets to hold our new gas stovetop. Then we were going to add an eating/conversation bar behind. Well, we had just bought an old stained glass window for a bathroom, when we encountered in the store the antique piece of our dreams - a chicken incubator! It's refinished, exactly the right dimensions, has a built-in bar behind, and just fits our stovetop. Why on earth is she telling us this, you ask? Because it has the original brass label on the front which reads, Good Luck, built by Charters, TurlockCalif. - Pat. Pending. Is that cool, or what? Thanks again for all the support. I have to go now - I'll be delighted when my greatest skill levels are no longer at mane cutting and manure picking! Peg

This first-timer enjoyed the whole weekend; horses, events and especially the people. I I just wanted to add my thanks and what a great time! to everyone else's who wrote in. I thought the event was perfect - a fun combination of horses, meeting new people, and the diversions of the festival. Thanks to the organizers and volunteers who worked so hard. It was also a great way to show off the Fjord Horses. I had lots of people come up to ask about them when I was walking Salomon around. I didn't see a single 'bad actor' the whole weekend - some high spirits a couple of times but that was it. I've never been to a horse show that could say that about the breed being shown. Our sweet weanling colt, Rustenson, has pneumonia. Peg, you sure have our supportive prayer and good wishes for Rustenson.. he looked to be a strapping boy and will undoubtedly lick this! It's frightening to think about any health threat to these fuzzy darlings; his cousin, Dutchman (sort of, same Daddy anyhow) has so enamored himself to me I feel like bringing him in the house for safekeeping at night. One of these days he'll probably run me down or step on my foot and we can then get down to a normal relationship =) Fjords sure develop fast don't they Ruthie, NW MT

Re: streams, wormers, bears and thoseother horses
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Denise, Last summer, I started all 4 of my horses on the daily wormer thinking this would work better. One of my horses -- the older one--- didn't do well with it, so I took all of them off and went back to the pasteing. The vet told me that the daily wormer bombards their system constantly and some horses don't handle this well. I figured why take a chance Susan in MN
Re: cantering, and cantering, and cantering
This message is from: Jean Gayle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hey Brigid, great cantering. I gave up the big C at one time, deciding I was too old. Actually chicken. Then a great instructor started coming here to give lessons so when I rode for her I explained that I no longer do the canter! She did have a certain look on her face when I said it. So we worked at leg yields and getting my boy into correct balance and then as we trotted in admirable fashion she said and now CANTOR Canter? Oh no thought I. CANTOR was repeated and canter we did. Find a good farrier that can cut the toe off the hoof and correct the rotation via XRays and trims every four weeks, new XRays, new trim until the hoof is grown back. ~~~Jan~~~ in Michigan _ My 15 year old Annie was just diagnosed with a 7 degree rotation of her coffin bone. My vet has been wonderful and we are in the process of treatment, one step at a time.

(Food Poison) Sorry to hear that! It's easy to get carried away with junk foods while traveling, I know! It was so nice to meet you and see you ride your Fjords. Sami Nelson should be congratulated on another good show. However, a few people were upset with Sunday and the confusing movement between the arenas and the green horse classes. Yes, I loved the show. Next year I will definitely bring my boys. I'm no pro, but I can walk and trot around cones with the other beginners : ) Brigid
