But - my friends are, and they get downright disgusted at some of the behaivor at local pennings, too much yee-haw and not enough finesse. For that we go to the annual Reno Ranch Rodeo. Now there is teamwork. I am sure that the cream also rises in the penning ranks, and you gotta be darn good to make some of those times! On the culinary front I am throwing a thai chicken casserole in to the oven. I'll let ya know what its like. Re: Glory Bits
This message is from: "SUSAN L GIARGIARI" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello List, To Janne, so sorry to hear about your loss and hope that Heidi is well on the mend now. It is a fear that touches your inner consciousness at the beginning of every foaling season. Know that you are in all out thoughts and prayers. To people inquiring about the Glory Bit, I was able to purchase one from a place in PA from the Amish, the sides do not slide, they are of a very good quality with the joint at the check that does not pinch. The one I bought by mail, had to measure when we got home, was $39 plus shipping. I have never seen one in any tack shop on the east coast for less than $70. Let me know if you need to have the info and I will post it to the list. We are leaving for PA Thursday nite, Richard's practice drive for the GA trip! Amish Auction we attend every year. Lots of neat stuff! To Philis A., we just had a Forest Fire in Pelham, NH today that burnt 10 acres. It was a backyard burn that rekindled. Our snow cover is almost gone and firefighters were surprised to have such a fire so soon in the season. We have been having up in the 50's and that's sweater weather! Richard is doing chores again, Yay! and able to help me with two 4 yr. old geldings we have in for training in draft and driving. There actually are dry spots here, so you know the mud season won't be bad, if we don't get more snow. Enjoy the spring, if it has arrived even for only a little while! Sue g.

Re: Spring Training ..
This message is from: "Cheryl Beillard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Just thought I'd let the list know that there will be another Parellic ground clinic in E. Ontario, near Kinburn (about half an hour out of Ottawa) on April 1-2 .. Some of you will know about it, but I was so taken with the one I attended last fall that I really thought I'd recommend it. The Cdn organization is making only its second trip east, to promote the method. Anyone within 3-4 hrs drive should think about attending. It's $75 for the two days, and about $300 + if you bring a horse, but I think they may have sold all the spaces for horses. Unless you decide to let the horse audit! Call Tom McEvoy at 613-623-1717, if you're interested. What made me think to mention it was the super session I had this morning with Soleia, who is 10 mths pregnant and has been worked only periodically throughout the winter, when it wasn't -30! This system is all about communication, as most of them are, I guess .. but what I can't get over is the expression in her eyes when she sees me get out the halter, rope and stick .. she absolutely softens up - you can see it in her eyes, and trots over to get the halter on.. then she assumes her "position" .. ie carefully lines herself up to face me, waiting instruction about which game we will play today. I can get her to straighten up and align herself with me from twenty feet away now .. but I"m afraid it has become the fall back when she gets confused (or I am) .. and sometimes it's difficult to get her out on the track to do some circling, because she anticipates lining up for me. She has also improved tremendously at backing up and following and halts on a dime when I come to a stop. Haven't ridden her in a while so don't know if this is going to make any difference to our communication when I'm on her back and not on the ground, but it's clear she likes to do this stuff. And she hasn't forgotten a thing from last fall, in fact, she's better than she was, with very little more effort on my part. Hope to learn more myself from the next clinic and see if we get beyond the very basics.

A little goes a long way Karen knows a zillion percent more than me. But watching the finals in team penning in Albuquerque, the "good ones" don't do it that way. It's a lot more cerebral than physical sometimes -- thinking ahead to be in the right place and teamwork, rather than hotdogging. It was so fun. I loved the way it was multi-generational, multi-gender, multi everything. I planned to look in for 10 minutes and stayed 5 hours. My only complaint was I've never been around so many smokers in my life (cough-cough), and you know how virtuous we ex-smokers can be (vbg). Gail-Dorine
Re: Our first filly!
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (James Rollins) Cornerstone Fjords is pleased to announce that last night at 11:20pm our mare Budeia gave birth to a fine filly. Mother is fine and baby as well. Both have been vet checked last night and this morning and are busy getting to know one another. Dad is pretty proud too up at Trinity Fjords as this is his first daughter. Caretaker Kathy however is a little worse for wear and hoping to get in a few naps today between checking on the girls in the barn. Very rewarding to be there for the entire birth and have that important bonding time. I must rethink sleeping on the straw bales however and invest in a cot for the barn! Now I shall go over my list of names I picked out to see which one fits her the best. Our next foal is due on the 22nd so will be doing this again soon! What a blessing fom the Lord! Kathy Rollins
Re: glory bit
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Nancy, The Glory butterfly has a loose sliding connection at the cheek: I have found that if the bit isn't wide enough it will catch the lip at the corner of the mouth and pinchyou need a wider mouthpiece on these also so that the upper part of the cheek piece is wide enough to clear his face. There should be 1/4" To 1/2" space between the top of the shank (where the headstall attaches) and the face. What width is this bit? Ray Johnson uses a 5 3/4" for his MORGANS so he would advise you to get a wider bit. Ray will exchange a bit if you need a different size, (even if it was bought somewhere else!) Call him! For the moment you could wrap a little latex bit wrap in the gaps at the ends of the mouthpiece where it slides and prevent it from sliding so much and catching the lip. I do this with one of mine. The Glory RIDING bit, while it needs to be wide enough for the top rings to clear the face, does not have the sliding action that the butterfly bit has and the lip pinching wouldn't be a problem. Again, I'm sure Ray wold exchange your Butterfly model for the riding model! That is what I like about dealing with him, he is very helpful! So call Ray Johnson (603) 726-3766 I think what is good about this bit is the shape and angle of the mouthpiece, it helps tham somehow use themselves better. Originally Ray and Audry Johnson developed the bit for Ray's morgans which have lower pallets and thicker tongues (like the fjords) and angle that the mouthpiece is to the shanks is one thing that makes it work well. I hope this helps..But do call Ray and ask him about it and maybe exchange for a riding bit or a larger bit! glory bit
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi - I too use a glory bit. I have ridden Sonnie in a eggbutt snaffle for years and driven him in a uxeter kimberwick (soft cheek position) for years. I went to a lisa Singer clinic a few months ago. She suggested the glory butterfly bit. I splurged and bought one. The weather was so bad that I have really been unable to drive in it, but I was able to ride with it - I removed the leather curbing strap and again just used it in soft cheeck (can't remember how to spell cheek? Too early for me!) He has been awesome! He has been S good, that I have to make the lessons short cause I think he's really using his hiney. His canter is excellent. No leaning - soft - flexible. The only thing is, he seems to bite his cheek and bleed - a little - very little bit. At first I thought it was just carrot juice and curtailed all snacks prior to riding. Then I brought in the vet - she thought he had very fat cheeks (spelling? sorry) and filed a couple of points down. She is coming again and is going to put a bit rest that should help. Has anyone else had this problem? I love the bit and really wanted to get a riding one also, but the blood bothers me. I thought the problem was corrected, but I had a friend ride him last week (we still have a right lead problem - rider error I am sure) she got after him for coming against her hands - she a good rider - and sure enough - he bled a little bit. Sorry so long - this has been bugging me for a long time. See ya - Nancy In NH
