You did renew on time I just looked.

I know the Spring Herald was late in getting to me, but
it seems that this has been a couple weeks now.

I only received mine last week.

Carol - do you mean leg wraps?? If so, I use them and they seem to work -
reduce some of the stomping. Also good if there is an injury/sore to keep
flies off.

Leg bands? Have not heard of that. I am curious too.

RE: Horse guarantee question

Bill, I have many years of experience breeding horses. I also, researched and
taught a short course on horse breeding and operating a horse business.

Bill Walton wrote:
I have a question that I'd like to put to the group. We bought a
Fjord mare about 2 and a half years ago that was supposedly pregnant at the
time and the seller guaranteed a live birth. A few months after getting her we
found she was no longer pregnant. We took her back to the seller who had the
stud and had her serviced. This was done several times last year and twice
this year all to no avail. All this was done under the direction of a good vet
who ultrasounded her on a regular basis. I have finally come to the conclusion
that it is futile to spend any more time and money trying to get this mare
pregnant and my vet agrees.
This sounds logical. After it was determined that the mare was not pregnant
the first or second time, was an exam performed to see if there were any
reproduction problems with the mare? Normally, if you are buying a mare for
breeding purposes, it is recommended that this exam be performed by your vet.
Also, what is the conception rate for the stallion? These are things that you
need to know before it can be settled that the mare will not conceive.

So, since I have not encountered this situation in the
past and am a novice at horsebreeding I do not know what I should expect the
seller to do to honor his guarantee of a live birth. I know that selling a
pregnant mare with a guaranteed live birth is a fairly common practice but what
is the accepted recourse if the live birth does not happen.
Normally, the guaranteed live birth is from the stallion owner, not the seller
of the mare. In this case, it sounds like the seller is both. What happens if
a live foal is not born depends on the contract that was signed. One standard
practice is to rebreed the mare to the same stallion.

The seller has offered to give me either another breeding to another Fjord
mare or the $450 he normally gets as a breeding fee.
This sounds like a common practice, but what did the contract say?

A friend of mine who has dealt with horses many years says that I should
return the mare and get my money back but the seller is not real receptive to
that idea.
To force this issue, you would have to prove that the seller knew that the mare
was not breedable or had a condition that made it difficult, and was not
pregnant.

I don't necessarily like that idea either as we have gotten quite attached
to this mare. I know I would not have bought her in the first place for the
price I paid if it were not for the guaranteed live birth.
Boy! can I relate to this situation. I probably paid too much for my first
mare, but later I found out that compared to deals friends of mine got from the
same dealer, I got a really good deal. Also, I could never replace the fun and
education I got from that mare.

I hope this information helps. There may be alot of factors that I am not
aware of in this situation. Here are a couple of web sites for more
information. There are a lot more sites, but I don't have my list with me.

Anneli I love that opens her mouth and inhales everything edible in the
neighborhood. My warmblood and fjord are still gaining if I am not
careful . Gunnar ripples and they are on drying pasture grass and last
years grass hay

. Yesterday I was sitting on the patio reading the paper and heard a loud
crash and then the horses screamed and went berserk. I could not see Gunnar
but the mare was standing in place bucking and kicking and staring out at
the field. I finally saw Gun who was running across the field with the
pasture small gate around his neck! A calamity, never planned. He finally
stopped and shook his neck and the gate dropped off. He turned and tore
back like a freight train, with the mare still kicking and bucking, and
headed right for the now open gate area. Waving arms did not stop him, of
course by now the dogs were barking frantically and I was yelling with the
mare screaming. I was afraid the hot wire was still in place across the
gate opening but he had already broken that loose. Through the gate he came
at break neck speed, slid to a halt on the lawn and began eating. Cheez!!!
Everything worked out well amazingly. I could replace the gate as it had
lifted off its moorings, I found the hot wire was rusted and had broken but
I never put more than thirty feet in each section so they do not run off
with 100 feet or more to cut legs etc. That rusting also told me why the
hot wire was not working. So, thankfully all was well

The ferrier was just here and we had been watching a growing lump on the
pastern of my big boy. The ferrier said it is side bone with growth toward
ring bone. No lameness yet and he is not ridden. At nineteen the ferrier
felt he would go off from something else before the ringbone got him. He
suggested DMSO twice a week and then once a week. Anyone else had this
problem?

I use my old close contact dressage Passier on all my horses. I use a short
thick western pad that I have sown loops in to attach to the girth leathers.
The saddle has a regular tree. Might have some problems with Gunnar now as
he is quite broad. Jean

2000-07-19 Thread curt421
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I would have to agree with the e-mails recently concerning saddle fitting for
younger horses. They do grow and therefore could need a different saddle size.
Marsha Korose and I recently found a saddle that fits all Fjords very well.
It is called an Ansur saddle. This saddle is tree-less, therefore, it does not
pinch the horse like normal saddles. It is designed and made of certain
materials so that it does not restrict the horses motion. It also gives the
rider the feel of riding bareback.

We tried the saddle on our very wide gelding, Caribo. He was more relaxed and
had more action than normal when we use our ortho-flex saddle. The only
problem we found was that it takes the rider a while to get use to the natural
feeling of the horses movements.

The saddle costs about the same as an ortho-flex. It is sized according to the
riders size and comes in petite, small, and medium. Most riders fit the small
size. Women seem to like this fact. For more information check out the web
site: http://www.ansursaddle.com/. Just another option.

2000-07-19 Thread Karen McCarthy

From: Brenda Simonson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also have a horse that developed what I thought was a sarcoid
(multiple actually). The vet that we use doesn't believe in the
injections and tried to freeze the first one off. It didn't work. She
then cut it out. That one never came back.

Then he got one on by the corner of his mouth. We cut that one out
too. It came back.

Then he got one on the side of his neck. I got frustrated and found
some herbal remedy - thuja ointment and hilton ditton herbs. About 8
months after being on the therapy I noticed that both spots were
shrinking. They are still shrinking. I don't know if it was the herbs
or just time - and he has been off the herbs for quite some time.
(Some articles I have read say to leave them alone and they will go
away - sort of like warts in humans.)

Just my two cents worth.

Brenda

Yeah Brenda!!!
I have been lurking on the sarcoid thread a bit...I too had a gelding who
came back to me after a couple of years w/ a well developed sarcoid growth
over his eye.
I went the route of the injections. VEEERY expensive, and in my case, I
think utterly worthless. ( 3 injs. w4-6 wk intervals, I think.)It just
dragged on..
I did a search for a homeopathic remedy, and I came upon the Chamisa Ridge
catalog,(online). They offered the Ditton mix, man. by Hilton Herbs in
conjunction w/ the topical application of Thuja salve.(Yew tree /
anti-cancer drug).
Arne was in great pain, didn't eat for a day or two after the anti-cancer
inj's. (Very bad for a weegee to go off feed!) The thing burst and bled and
was generally VERY painful and more disgusting...and did not resolve itself.
The Ditton worked like a charm. I sold him after one month into the
herbal/homeopathiic treatment, and his new people were very vigilant about
his dosing. They called me a month and a half later and told me it had
shrunk by half, and 3 mos. later it was ALL GONE!
BTW, my vet was very open to trying the homeopahic route, as he was not very
satisfied either w/ the anti-cancer inj.
