Did you advertise for certain breeders or sellers? If so don't you think this is a great way for them to get out there and sell? Wouldn't this encourage more people to seek out the breeders and sellers to help defray show costs and breeders and sellers to deduct advertising expenses? I really think this is just about the most effective way for breeders/sellers of Fjords to spend their advertising buck. To have a live salesforce (both human and equine) actively pushing your product to literally thousands of potential buyers is certainly invaluable. And to expose people who say I've seen them in books but never before in person to those big brown eyes and questing noses we all love is a seed for future sales whose value is incalculable. How many of us are Fjord owners today because of strictly because of that first one we saw somewhere? It is just too bad that so few heeded our requests for material to distribute at this event. I'm really disappointed that we had no literature from Midwest breeders/sellers arrive in time for us to give out. Since the regional clubs do not think that funding breed promotion events is their responsibility, I really feel there should be a more formal program established by the NFHR promotions committee to oversee a central fund to which breeders can contribute to help pick up the expenses for shows like this. The same program could also act as a central distribution point for literature of all farms who did contribute. And yes, I will here state publicly that I would be happy to help develop that program. -- Steve McIlree -- Pferd Skipper -- Omaha, Nebraska, USA Noblest of the train that wait on man, the flight-performing horse. --William Cowper(1731-1800)

Also, we directed them to the NFHR website to find a breeder in their area. If so don't you think this is a great way for them to get out there and sell? I would think so. You can reach so many more people this way. Wouldn't this encourage more people to seek out the breeders and sellers to help defray show costs and breeders and sellers to deduct advertising expenses? Jean I think it is a good symbiotic relationship! We also handed out many of the new NFHR brochures. For those of you that haven't seen them yet, they are very well done! This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] just lost a horse with a colic they suspect was caused by a virus and today one of her other horses is colicking with the same type of symptoms. Misha, I don't know of any viral causes of colic. Plenty of bacterial causes though. I think we were talking about Clostridium and Salmonella earlier this year. Is this what you are referring to? This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] OK, I'll put in my two cents about the expo. I was expecting to get a lot of the cute type of comments (which we did), but there were many legitimate questions and interests in the fjord as a sport\recreational horse. I think there is a real market for the fjords here. Other breeds represented were: paints, pintos, trekehners, quarter horses, morgans, arabians, shires, percherons, min. horses, min. donkeys, donkeys, shet. ponies, appaloosas, palominos, suffolk punch, paso finos, spanish mustangs, and some others that I'm forgetting I'm sure. Disciplines represented: roping, reining, trail, endurance, draft, fox hunting, vaulting, driving, western, dressage, forest service pack mules (a big hit), mounted police, etc, etc. There are over 200 signatures in our guest book from people from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, and various parts of Nebraska. Even one person from France (although I don't think they came just for the expo). The date is already set for next year and we are planning to be there again. The Ehlers are planning on bringing more horses. Buz is going to bring his three horse unicorn hitch . Hopefully we can get others to join us. A good time was had by all! This message is from: Vivian Creigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] I literally got goose bumps when I read Steve's post about the woman watching the tape of WEZ. That is so exciting and exactly the kind of exposure the breed needs. When I take Marnix to a ridden dressage show I am usually surrounded by woman of some age asking me if they all do that!!! Well ofcourse not all Fjords have the ability just like not all WB have the ability, but certainly there are Fjords who would certainly satisfy the average dressage rider who is happy to ride to second level on an honest good natured mount. I have never believed for a moment that I'm successful in combined driving in spite of my Fjords, but because of them. Friends remain in awe that I continue to spend money on buying more Fjords instead of a more competitive breed and I feel I would be a fool not to stick with a breed that has given me so much success and pleasure. Plus whenever I get breed envy I have my daughter's TB event horse and Welsh ponies in the barn to satisfy any need for variety. Vivian Creigh

Sorry, I don't have any way of copying the tape. These were some tapes that Beth and Sandy at Starfire Farms made for us to use at the Expo. They were compilations of stuff from Holland, Norway, Blue Earth, Libbey and more. They provided us with over six hours of video to show in our booth. The Grand Prix test on the tape was Wez being ridden by Anne's trainer; there was also Anne riding a Fourth level test on Mishka(sp?). You might want to contact Beth to see how to get the footage of Wez. The email is [EMAIL PROTECTED] All weekend we listened to truly experienced horsepeople express amazement watching the videos of classes at Libbey or demos in Holland of how light and undrafty the Fjords moved. If nothing else I think we opened a lot of eyes as to the breed's versatility. I'd like to throw my two cents in on this one. The woman who is the president of the Nebraska Dressage Association stopped by the booth to look at the horses, and asked what you could do with them. I replied that they would do anything you wanted, and that we had some video of one doing a Grand Prix dressage test. She said she would like to see it, with probably more skepticism than honesty. First Nebraska Horse Expo
This message is from: Cynthia_Madden/OAA/UNO/[EMAIL PROTECTED] We had a very successful weekend at the first horse fair in Nebraska. It was held as the Grand Opening event for the still under construction Lancaster County Event Center in Lincoln (where we think the first National Fjord Horse Show should be held). The turnout was terrific. Steve and I had to leave my cart behind as we couldn't get our truck or our small flatbed trailer for the cart out of ice. Thanks again, Mom, for the new Brenderup trailer in which we hauled Tank to the fair in Steve's t-bird. Fortunately, there was a spare cart in the driving club's exhibit and we were able to drive the whole weekend. Steve W. had done a great job of setting up the booth with the stuff from NFHR on Thursday. With our nice booth, materials and the great tapes sent by Sandy and Beth we were ready to go when the fair opened at noon on Friday. Steve W. brought Breana and Tordin and Buzz Bonnie Ehlers brought Gus in from Stapleton, NE. So we had four Fjords at the fair. They got a lot of attention. We talked to hundreds of people about them and gave out lots of information. Tordin and Tank were also visible in our driving club's demos so they had lots of exposure. In our demo, Steve had Tordin pull a stone boat, Bonnie rode Gus in western gear and I drove Tank. Tank even got 10 seconds of TV fame on the local station. The Fjords drew crowds to our aisle and thankfully were at the head of the aisle as an 18.3 newly imported Shire stallion right across from two of our horses frequently dragged people off. I have to admit he was a true gentleman and a gorgeous creature. It appears that Bonnie and Buzz have sold Gus thanks to the fair as several people were seriously interested in him. The tape showing Wez doing a grand prix dressage test brought oohs and ahhs f rom the dressage crowd who thought it was some of the best dressage they had seen. The scenes from Norway and Holland also got lots of attention. We really enjoyed seeing Libby again. We haven't head anything about how the MWFHC mid-winter meeting went. Could someone please give a report TIA. Cynthia Madden email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
