Fwd: [ClassicShetlands] stolen horses
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello everyone, Thought I would post this in case anyone has seen this truck near their farm. Apparently, at this point in time the stolen horses are from NY. Her fences were cut in the middle and wires folded back to each connecting post and halters/lead ropes were found in the pasture. Noise/farm lights/neighbors thwarted these attempts. Neighbors stated that they had seen the Blue PB in the area. Betty has personally sent out 500 alert/warning post cards to the Barneveld Horseman's Association. Again the truck is a blue Peterbilt with 24 aluminum stock trailer. This is the same truck used in the western region mini-horse case. Betty has been in contact with the NYS Troopers. Betty has been in contact with another hack stable in Newport, Herkimer County that had two horses stolen and found them at the Indiana Horse Auction. Betty was told that the men were held in Indiana and released. At this point, we have been informed that it is one white man and two black men. This case is being worked by Detective Mike Delleck 315-866-7275 for the Herkimer County Case. Please forward this alert to all your horse DL's and make folks aware to be on the watch for this truck and to keep close tabs on horses pastured at night. If any of you have more information, kindly send it along. Diane Jones President, New York State Horse Council

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In a message dated 8/12/2002 5:33:10 AM Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: At my barn I am the only one who wears a helmet at all times. I am at an eventing barn. Good for you. You are setting an example. I think I mentioned that years ago I never wore a helmet. It sounds like a joke, or a bad tv commercial, but I used to ride on the beach and in the canyons at Malibu through the 70's, wind in my hair, never a thought towards a head injury. But back then I don't believe we had the helmet technology that we have today. Helmets were more of an apparel item, and the ones I saw didn't really give you much protection. Today with such great protection available, I don't see the point in not wearing one. But I've become a nut on safety. Pamela
fjord mule
This message is from: Kathleen Spiegel [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have a thoroughbred, a quarter horse/TB , a mule ( sister to the cross and daughter of the TB) and a Fjord. Although I have no desire to make a fjord mule, it really might be a wonderful cross. Both the mule and Fjord are very very similar in temperament and trainability. They are not governed as much by the flight response as the horses and I would trust both of them further than either of the horses. Their response to new situations is incredible.Their devotion to people and their intelligence ( and playful personality) is several notches higher than the horses. They do share a trait that has been mentioned in the posts on childrens horses and that is incredible strength, particulalrly in their necks and a different attittude toward authority. You cannot be just a passenger on either the fjord or the mule - they constantly look for direction and if you don't give it they are quite confident of their own direction. They too must realize the similarities. At home, my Fjords all time best buddy is the mule - they look like mutt and jeff one short blonde one tall elegant brunette ( yes some mules are simply elegant) At the place I have her for training, she fell instantly in love with the mule next to her ( and he her). Given the proper training, this little fjord mule in the post might be awsome. Kathy in Idaho
Re: Ruthie's comment on brochure..
This message is from: Sarah Nagel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yes, Kathy, you are correct. A new, updated PNFPG brochure was beautifully printed by the Webbers for our Group. The photo with the infant near the Fjord was removed. The brochure contains photos of a Fjord pulling a cart, being used in a pack string, as a mount for vaulting, being ridden by a young person (wearing a helmet), in combined driving (helmet again), being ridden as a trail horse, being jumped (helmet worn by rider) and a final picture of 4 Fjords pulling a plow. The PNFPG keeps a supply of these brochures, available to be used if you are participating in breed promotion or representation. The brochure is also printed with space on the back panel, so that a person can put their farm name and number to use for their farm's promotion. They are available free of charge for breed promotion activities, or for a fee of 3 brochures for $1.00 for personal/farm use. This nominal fee covers the cost of printing only. Please contact me if any of you are interested in obtaining any of these brochures. I would be happy to send you a sample brochure to look at. They will also be available at the Libby Show in September! Sarah Nagel [EMAIL PROTECTED] PNFPG Promotional Materials 4284 S. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ruthie, I believe that the photo of the infant near a fjord has been removed from the brochure from the PNFPG based on exactly the concerns you presented. Thanks for the comments regarding the website. It helps to have folks participate in these things so that we are representing our breed with both respect and enthusiasm. In any case I will check on the brochure with the group. We may still be circulating a batch that was printed earlier as they are getting expensive to make with such nice color. Bill Webber would know for sure.

This message is from: Vivian Creigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'd like to mention here that I just, about 45minutes ago, gave aFjord Award at our CDE. It was an incredibly lovely stained glass piece made by Martie Bolinski calledCircle of Friends This year it was won by Nancy Botte and Sonny who also won best prelim dressage Championship with a fabulous score of 35. This stained glass sun catcher is absolutely lovely and I was proud to offer it as a trophy. Check out the website. Thanks Martie I'll be in touch next year. Vivian C

Re: Tragedy Re: Fjords for Kids
This message is from: Reena [EMAIL PROTECTED] How horrible Pammy thoughts and prayers go out to you and your stepsisters boyfriend family... At my barn I am the only one who wears a helmet at all times. I am at an eventing barn. When they (riders) jump they do wear one, but not on hacks or flat work. I am the only one with a fjord and I could care less what I look like! I used to NEVER wear one when I had my welsh mare, but when I got my Quarter horse gelding who was three (I no longer have him) you can bet I wore one! and thank goodness I did, cause once when mounting up I was swinging my leg over and he moved forward and over the other side I went.my head landed on the asphalt and my body on the dirt.. Martie Bolinski's art
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I would just like to say that I have a GORGEOUS stained glass piece done by Martie. It's really well done, of very high quality, and gets complements from all who see it. Besides, Martie is funny and sweet! You couldn't do better for a fjord-related gift than one of her pieces. Go, Martie! http://bolinsj.tripod.com/twinoaksgraphics Jan
Re: Tinkertoy
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Janice, I just wanted to give you a public congratulations on your new foal. I was glad that I got to share the experience with you and Carl. I must say that in 10 yrs of practice I have never seen a more vigorous foal. Nice straight legs and good body too. When I returned later that morning to test the colostrum level, my assistant was able to see the foal. As we were leaving, she asked if the foal was a week old. She couldn't believe it when I told her it was just born that morning. Steve White, DVM Waterloo, Nebraska

All we can do is continue to encourage all riders, young and old, to wear their helmets for every ride and drive. May God be with your friends and family at this sad time. Kathy Folks in Galena, Boy am I envious of all of you learning from Brian Jensen! He is so easy to learn from and so very patient. I would like to have been part of someone's luggage for this trip! Have a grand time and I hope to read about it all on the list afterward. Little by little I am learning to drive a pair, one day I hope to be a decent driver. So glad that we have the Jensens and others to learn from out here in the west:)
RE: Tragedy Re: Fjords for Kids Riding Helmets
This message is from: Bob Stahr of THS [EMAIL PROTECTED] EVERY TIME. . . EVERY RIDE. . . is an educational video on head injury prevention is a must for all riders, instructors, horse clubs and parents of children who ride. We were introduced to this video about 10 years ago when our daughters pony club leader played it at a mandatory kid+Parent meeting. We now share it with anyone that is even considering purchasing a horse. Helmets are absolutely mandatory for anyone mounting, or even handling a horse at our riding school. Here is more info about the video: http://4h.wsu.edu/foundation/videter.html -Bob -- Bob Stahr [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.horsemanshipschool.com/ -- -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, August 11, 2002 11:57 AM For example, Beth Beymer rode Romulus in a helmet at the Buck Brannaman clinic. NOT exactly cool behavior at a natural horsemanship clinic (I think she may have been the only person there in a helmet, save possibly some obviously very new and very inexperienced horse owners.) But...in doing so, I would wager that Beth has made it psychologically possible for ten other Fjord owners to wear helmets, even in situations where no one else will. I do not give a fig for coolness, but commend Beth. Especially after the email I received from my mother today, and would respectfully LOVE to see everybody with a horse wear a helmet EVERY time they ride (like that will happen! but I can dream!). Sorry if I'm a bit terse. But I'm in shock. My stepsister and her boyfriend went to San Diego yesterday to see his sister, who has horses. She was recently given a Tennessee Walker stallion. I do not know if that is the horse she was riding. Nor do I know if it was a dangerous horse to begin with, hence it being given away. I do not know if she was wearing a helmet. But I doubt it. All I know is that a day that was supposed to be spent as a wonderful, lazy summer day of barbeques, swimming and riding turned tragic. She fell off whatever horse she was riding. Both the front and back of her skull is crushed. They are talking about taking her off life support today. She has a six year old son. :( The email my mother sent me was one begging me to be careful around my horses. Always am. Always. They are 1000 pounds of muscle and hoof. Even the tamest horse can hurt you. I have in my barn the sweetest, tamest animals that I think have ever walked this earth. But I'm still careful. I pray everybody else has a safe, happy and fun summer with their fjords. And also pray that we all take advantage of the technology we have in 2002 and wear gear that will help protect our brains in a fall. Pamela Who is very sad and also sorry to depress all you good people. But I had to share this. :(

This message is from: Knutsen Fjord Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] What a wonderful discussion and sharing of knowledge and opinions there has been on the subject of children's horses. I invited Ruthie privately, and I invite all of you now, to offer wording that you think would properly represent the Fjord breed to the world. We will certainly consider any and all material for our PNFPG web site. Thanks in advance. And, Steve McIlree, you are, indeed, a genius. I LOVED the slide show. And I'm sure that being the human of Tinkertoy's dad had absolutely nothing to do with it Actually, it's interesting to compare Tink with GJ, her full brother from the year before. Both show somewhat finer bone that most Erlend foals, and both show the forehead and rump cobwebbing that mostly disappears later. Tink is leggier and more feminine. Both take a bit more after mom than dad, I think, so they inherit Suki's eyes to die for. I have been having difficulty, however, convincing Janice that she got the filly I was supposed to have from that breeding . I tried to tell her that they must have been switched at the vet hospital, but, so far, she seems determined to retain possession of Tinkertoy. Darn! And yes, Janice, she will be grey. Currently, we are in the throes of getting ready to move. Tomorrow we learn whether our offer is accepted and Tuesday, our house is on the Realtors' tour. Arghhh! At least we have gorgeous visitors to distract us - Mike Melbye's lovely red dun Tilly from Germany, and Shannon Kaplan's Brette with her exceptional colt, Magnus, by Dennis Johnson's stallion, Torungen. Dennis, you should be very proud of this up-headed mischief-maker! He captivates everyone who sees him. Time to sign off for now - Peg Peg Knutsen - Ellensburg, WA http://www.eburg.com/~kffjord/
Pamela's step-sister
This message is from: Knutsen Fjord Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Oh Pamela, I am so, so sorry about your loss of your step-sister! Sometimes I find myself a voice crying in the wilderness about wearing helmets. But even as the chair of the Libby show, I find I cannot impose such a requirement. So we strongly recommend, except for a few classes. I have cracked 2 helmets myself, and even though I am considered hard-headed, I'm sure I would be dead or paralyzed had I not been wearing them. My son suffered a double occipital skull fracture from not wearing his bike helmet, and we are so lucky to have him alive and whole. I'm glad you have the list community to help a little on this sad journey. Take care, Peg Peg Knutsen - Ellensburg, WA http://www.eburg.com/~kffjord/
FWD from CD-L: re Karen McCarthy
This message is from: Marsha Jo Hannah [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---begin forwarded message This is Charlene Margesson and I am typing this for Karen McCarthy. She is reclining like a tanktop maja. I am glad to report that she is alive and as normal as she can be (or is normally). She is living on Perkidan and Advil. We went to see some friends today and she is now lusting after this 1960's Barcalounger covered in kelly green Naughahyde. Yes, real live Naugha hide! Tomorrow Dave is going over to pick it up for the next few weeks. She has to wear this great body brace. It looks just like the top that WonderWomen wore. I think it looks more like Joan of Arc or a Norwegian Valkarie. She needs a helmet for the total effect. Karen thinks that she is going to go as a Ninja Turtle for Halloween. The worst part of this is her bruise. As Karen says it goes all the way to Florida and back. We're taking bets as to how long it takes to go away. Seriously, she is looking much better than I expected. She is walking around on her own. She will be in the brace for about 12 weeks, but she is doing just fine. She wants to thank everyone for their messages and thoughts: Ursula Jenson, Gail Russell, Buck S., Nan Hanker, Diane Gomes, Linda, Dave McWethy, and all others not listed here. ---end forwarded message
