Gail. the sarcoids on Charley's sheath and inner thigh were external and the
xtera has done a great job. Yours sounds more like a (hopefully) fatty
tumor or such. I am sure Steve can tell you. We are going to treat Charley
one more time and finish the small bottle of xtera. The hardened skin is
almost gone and where the skin turned white it is back to a natural color.
This stuff really works. Good luck, Jean

Fjords at Waverly Horse Sale

This message is from: "Robert Morgan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

>From Helena, MT.
At the Waverly Midwest Horse Sale, Waverly, IA -- March 25 -- 29.
There will be a farm dispersal of 24 registered Fjords, older ones broke,
several yearlings. One mature stallion, another stallion, two yearling
stallions, geldings, mares, some mares bred back. Another group of 14 Fjords,
3 weanling stallions, 2 mares and 8 geldings. website: www.waverlysales.com;
to email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have no idea how the Fjords are selling at this sale, this is not the first
time they have sold there. This is primarily a draft and driving horse sale
with lots of driving stuff, they usually have about 3 rings going at one time.
Harnesses, carriages, wagons, sleighs, horse drawn farm equipment, all the
other stuff too.
Will anyone be attending the Small Farmers Journal sale in Sisters, OR --
April 25-27? Horses and equipment for farming, and driving. Swap meet also
held on the grounds.
Horse Progress Days, July 4-5, Mt Hope, OH, showcases the animal drawn
technologies. Usually some Fjord teams will attend.
If anyone goes, please report back the results on the prices overall and in
particular the Fjords.
We have a gelding for sale, 4 yrs old, drives well, sort of laid back, just
started riding, (walked up to the stake with the surveyors tape and I think he
tasted it!), will be ridden in the mountains this summer. He will have some
size.
We have a local Helena Equine Expo, all volunteer staff, our 10th year, up to
two days now. We always take a team to the event with the wagon and give
rides. We missed one year, and the next year people were really aggressive
when asking, 'where were you?'
Bonnie, Helena, MT -- where we hope to have spring moisture! A very mild and
somewhat dry winter.

thanks for the ideas (about having color photos on the

Hi, > Gail - "Miss Daisy Mae" is a mini zebu blend, a breed that was started
about 15 years ago, if I remember right. I bought her from the breed's
founder and registry chairperson. The registry broke apart and no longer is
functioning - but if you go on any of the mini cattle elists (yes, they
exist, I was on most of them!) then you can track down most of them (there
are 3 breeders of these mini ox left in the U.S., I was last told).

If you like to see a picture of Daisy - click here and scroll to bottom:

In this picture, Daisy is full grown at 3 years old (this is NOT a calf!)
There's also a picture of Petunia the carting Hampshire ewe - just before she

Hi Gail,

If it isn't raw, and not growing, I wouldn't disturb it. Get some "Ditton"
herbs from Chamisa Ridge and start him on them. Also get some "Thuja"
ointment from Chamisa. if the lump isn't on the surface the ointment
probably won't have much effect but it won't harm anything..

Stella has had several probable sarcoids that I keep a watch on and they
don't change much over the last several years. One lump on her back thigh
has been there for years, gets a bit larger, then smaller. seems to shrink
in the summer when she is eating green grass and dandelions, etc. She had
one removed from her jaw several years ago,it had gotten raw. I then
started feeding the Ditton herbs and it never recurred , even tho the lab
felt the vet had not gotten all the sarcoid cells. I used the Thuja also
on the incision.

Well, that's my experince. Keep an eye on it, don't disturb unless it
starts to grow, fester, etc.

Anybody else? KMac? Dr. Steve?

This message is from: "MeadowLark Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have been reading the posts about the rescue mares. I was surprised to learn
that the mare named Molly is a full sister to Troll C-492, who is the sire of
Sherle and Walt Monheims's beautiful stallion Lower Forty Bodil (evaluated
blue in conformation and he has also passed all of his introductory
performance tests with flying colors to receive his Silver Medallion of
Quality. Beauty AND brains!) Bodil has a wonderful disposition. We also own a
wonderful Troll son. If this girl takes after her family tree anyone should be
proud to take her home. We have found it isn't unusual for quality horses to
wind up in adoption. I've no desire to start any controversy (rescued Fjords
versus those from a breeder-we love them ALL!) I would just like to see Molly
and the rest of these girls have a chance at a good life. We have several
beautiful, gentle and beloved rescue Fjords and we highly recommend adoption.

Hi all,

I have to call the vet out, but thought you all might know something about
this that migh (or might not) put my mind at ease.. I have an eight year
old black TB/Perch mix who developed sarcoids when he was five or six.
Several, various, on his muzzle, and flank. The vet biopsied and said they
were definitely sarcoids. We decided to wait to decide what to do...and
they went away by themselves sometime within the next six months.

Now that same horse has a one inch firm lump in his sheath. It does not
appear to be normal, as it is attached more firmly to the skin on one side
of the midline of his sheath than it is on the other side. Could this be a
sarcoid that has gone "underground?" It is well-encapsulated, and firm (does
not feel like a fatty tumor). It is not painful to manipulation. NOthing
on the skin surface at all, this is under the loose folds of his sheath. I
have been trying to search the internet on sarcoid + lump + sheath...but my
service is unbelievably slow right now...and I am not finding much of interest.

Yes, we are going to attend the Horse World Expo in Harrisburg, PA, on
Feb 28 - Mar 2. We will distribute farm flyers for a modest $10. Just
mail or e-mail your flyer to us. You can also give me a call at
703-330-2498 if you have any questions. If you want us to make copies,
just let us know how many and we will send you a bill later.

I agree with what Steve and Mike said earlier, B&W ads work just fine.
We post the all ads on a display board and in a book. I have also found
that the results are not usually instantaneous. They may not buy this
month, or this year, but they will remember the Fjord they saw at the
expo and buy one eventually.

We will have a Fjord on the floor the entire time plus participating
in the Stallion and Breed demos twice a day. We also lucked out with
the location assigned to us. Our booth and stall are just a few feet
from the only entrance to the exhibit hall. If anyone gets to the Farm
Show Complex in Harrisburg, PA, please come by booth S17 and visit with
us.

This message is from: "Hope Carlson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Our 9 yr old mare, Evie, is going to a friend's barn for a refresher course
in western and trail riding, traffic safety this coming April. Evie is so
quiet and good I could almost do it myself, but I can't risk those initial
rides alone on the trail and along the road, too many herniated disks in
various states of repair! I have saddled her, longlined on a halter, lunged
walk/trot and done alot of ground work, yields with a whisper touch. I am
kind of excited about being back at a barn with some old friends and riding
companions, big indoor, only 20 min. away, should have alot of fun. Now I
just have to work on trailer loading! Don't want to wait till the last
minute!

Experimented with leading Kirsten off property for the first time by hooking
her up with her mother (put a calf roping loop around Evie's shoulder,
attached Kirstens halter to that, and then my lead line went from Eve,
across the front of Kirsten). Lost them briefly once, when K went off
bucking (7 mo now, and a big girl) then they worked real nice leading at a
walk, stop, back, turn w. verbal signals, the neighbor joined us and we went
on a little jaunt, great fun on one of our first springlike days.

Hope you NorthEasterners are having some good sleigh rides, like a desert
here, hardly any snow all winter.

Hope

New question-problem with breeding

2003-02-18 Thread blackcat
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is Rhonda Taylor, ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), Straw Hat Stables, Ohio. I
have a problem and need advice. My 13 yr old mare is having difficulty
carrying. She has 3 healthy colts on the ground, and has been bred twice
in the last 3 years. Each time, she becomes pregnant on the first
service, and carries to 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 months, then absorbs the fetus.
All her blood work is normal, and the uterine culture is negative for
infection. Any ideas?

Fjord non-lovers?

2003-02-18 Thread blackcat
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Fjord non-lovers?

Just a note. I have 2 Fjord mares, 8 yrs and 13 yrs.
The 13 yr old is a definite lead mare, and wants to know "Why"
She is fond of "testing" to see if I really mean she has to do something
right that minute. A few round pen sessions after she hasn't been worked
in awhile fixes that in a hurry. She is not balky, or hard to start once
she knows we're working. She does have to recognize that whoever is
driving or riding is in charge -
and a tenative rider or driver lets her make her own decisions
instead of handling the thinking for her.
The 8 yr old is a "worrier" who, with a tenative rider will stop or seem
to balk if the rider is too tense or uncertain about how to do something.
The mare then thinks something is wrong, and she should slow down or
hesitate until the rider decides what is wanted. It has to do with
rider/driver cues with these 2. I have no trouble with them, but someone
who communicates uncertainty or
indecision will perceive that the horse has a problem - when it's really
the rider. R.Taylor

Fjord free shirt - winning caption announced!

Hello, all!

Ok - as promised - I picked the caption I like the most from all the
suggestions sent in, for the new fjord driving cartoon coming out from Rocky
Mountain Trails!

I was looking for a snappy caption, of a cart harnessed fjord looking back
over his shoulder to his driver something short and catchy. Did not
want to use "Have you driven a fjord lately?" as someone already has that for
her photo shirts ... and I wanted something different for my cartoon shirt
version.

Ruth Bushnell won with "Built Fjord Tough!"

It was a tough call, too! There were 5 captions that *really* caught my eye.
I took all five and presented them to a few folks here, and asked each one -
what catches you the most? From there, I made the pick.

I'm heading out to New York next week for a few days --- when I get back,
will have on my website the new cartoon up (and will post on eBay too).

Best wishes!
