Re: Congratulations, Maggie Sullivan
This message is from: Ed Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you, Sue, for your very kind words here, and friendly support at the Laurels -- when will this ol' horseshow mom get over the jitters on show day?! Maggie had a great time and learned a LOT -- you can see her growing as a driver each time she competes at a CDE, it's so rewarding! There's still a lot of work to do on dressage, and they should try to school cones before an event, but didn't they SMOKE the hazards? You don't have to ask the pony which phase is her favorite. Regarding turnout, Maggie and Andy felt that she was underdressed in just a country blouse, but I wanted to keep her looking young for awhile -- she's only 14 ! I learned sooo much as groom this weekend -- do all of you use black shoe polish on your harness, and parade gloss? What a difference it makes! As Sue says, the Laurels is a phenomenal event, really spectator-friendly, with all the driving -- including every hazard, oops I mean obstacle -- within sight of the main tent-- lots of vendors, US team members up-close and personal, jazz band playing... check out www.laurelscde.org and www.garyknollphotography.com to see what we mean. My one regret from our Laurels trip is that I wasn't videoing Nancy's marathon -- if only I had been recording Hazard 1, when her husband/navigator scooped up her whip off the ground, it was priceless! Ann in CT giving Riena another day off -- she earned it! - Original Message - From: mom Sent: Monday, September 11, 2006 4:10 PM To: fjordhorse-digest Subject: Congratulations, Maggie Sullivan This message is from: mom [EMAIL PROTECTED] I had the privilege of volunteering at the Laurels at Landhope this past weekend, and what a pleasure it was to see our own Maggie Sullivan with Andy Marcoux as navigator/coach turn in a really lovely performance. 8th in dressage, FIRST in Marathon, she came in 6th overall in the preliminary single pony division . . . made some of those older folks sit up and take note! The turn out was perfect and the performance professional. It was great to see a Fjord pony among all those browns, bays, chestnuts and greys! Nancy Roemer also competed with her lovely fjord. Ran into some trouble on the marathon and was eliminated, but with real class continued the next day to drive the (very tricky) cones course for no score. It was a super weekend! I worked dressage warm up on Friday and got to watch all of the intermediate and advanced tests, then hazard timer on Saturday and cones outgate on Sunday. If you ever get the opportunity or have a yearning to volunteer at the Laurels, Bobbi Hager does an absolutely phenomenal job of organization, briefing and supplying all the posts. And they keep you well fed, watered and shaded :~). Hard to beat. Take care. Sue Freivald

Unless we pay first class postage, they get delivered on this erratic schedule. Mike May is trying to get them classified as a subscription magazine, but has not been able to do so yet. The mailing problem has gone on for a very long time. I always get my Herald well after everyone else. In fact, the year Catherine Lassesen bought the two gray mares sired by Karibu, I missed purchasing them because my copy arrived long after Catherine had purchased them off the Herald advertisement. Maybe we should send them first class until Mike can get them reclassified. Gail -- Check out the new AOL. Libby - from my perspective
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In a message dated 9/13/2006 7:32:24 AM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi All- Could someone who was there post about Libby, please. Hi Everyone, I, too, had been waiting for someone to write about Libby, but guess everyone else has been busy unpacking, as I have, so I'll jump in. I brought 3 other gals from my barn with me, Sue Grantham, Mary Johnson and Deanna Haugen, all Fjord owners too. I sure needed the extra helping hands since I was showing 5 head throughout the Evaluation and show. The weather cooperated this year and the sun shone brightly the entire week. It was quite warm, sometimes over 100 degrees. I don't have an exact head count, but would estimate between 90 and 100 horses were there. Perhaps Sherrie Dayton could provide the exact numbers? It is always such fun to see so many Fjords all in one place and to reconnect with friends that you haven't seen for a while. Brian and Ursula came without horses, unfortunately. It seems that their horses had had a bout with a bug, coughs and runny noses so Jensen's had to make that tough decision not to bring them. That was a loss for all of us since it is always a thrill to watch Brian and Ursula work their horses. Brian did video much of the show for the benefit of the rest of us and Ursula provided moral support to everyone, although she looked a bit lost at times, not having her Raynor there! The PNFPG had invited Eike and Suse Schoen-Peterson, from Germany, to present a couple of very informative clinics. Eike and Suse are both vets. Eike is an FHI judge and evaluator and is currently Vice President of FHI as well as Vice President of the German Fjord Horse Association. Suse is also a Fjord evaluator and is President of the North Eastern Fjord Group in Germany. Both speak excellent English and both were very gratious and willing to answer questions from everyone. The clinics were well attended and they shared some really great information. Eike participated in the Conformation Evaluation as a guest evaluator and one thing that I noticed on his score sheets that I liked very much was that he strategically placed dots within the + and - columns and that gave you a better idea of how much he liked - or not - what he saw. Somewhat like A+, A-, B+, B-, etc. I liked that. One problem with showing horses oneself is that one does not have the chance to watch all of the other folks to see how they do since one is so busy just getting to the next class on time with the right horse in tow! However, it was such a treat to see the wonderful hitches and occassionally getting to watch a few of the exciting classes like the log skid. I presented a 5 year old mare, Dun Lookin' Inga, for her owner, Kimberly Kinney. She recieved her Red in Conformation and went on to earn her Silver Medallion for Intro. Western. I also showed Lakka for Catherine Lasessen (Lakka had previously received her Blue in Conformation) and she went on to earn her Silver Medallion for Intro. Western. I also showed TRR Thomas for Sue Grantham and he earned his Gold Medallion for Advanced Western. One of THE HIGHLIGHTS for me was - caution - BRAG ALERT - my gray stallion, Johan, won the Aged Stallions class and went on to receive GRAND CHAMPION STALLION! OH MY, I was absolutely thrilled and a bit NUMB as they presented us with that big, beautiful ribbon! Sherrie Dayton had worked for quite some time making a commemorative quilt in honor of Libby's 20th Anniversary. It had many pictures on it from the past 20 years, including some of our members who have passed away, Patty Peterson, Ron Davis and Lois Berge as well as photos of several Fjords that had made a real impact on the Fjord world. It was, indeed, a work of art and quite special for those of us who had 'been there' from the beginning. Raffle tickets were sold to PNFPG members only. LOW AND BEHOLD, Mary Johnson won that raffle and gave the quilt to me! Needless to say, I cried. It will grace a wall in my livingroom and will be a conversation piece for all who visit here - especially since there is a picture of Dusty and his sliding stop on it! Another special highlight for me was Brainne Orwick brought her 3 year old Dusty daughter, Brigetta Arvick. She won everything in sight including two Silver Medallions for Intro. English and Western. I could not keep track of all that she won, but did ask Brianne to email me the list. It was quite a thrill to see one of Dusty's 'children' do so well - a legacy for him. He is 20 years old now. My absolute favorite memory from this show will be the the performances that Dusty and I did with Anne and Wez. It was such an honor to be able to ride with them. It was a great tribute to two Fjords who have reached the top of their game in their perspective venues. As Anne and I were writing the script for our introduction, we calculated that

Libby
This message is from: oe Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] From a non-showing but Fjord loving person, the show at Libby was great. The temperatures were a little high but not that uncomfortable. The beauty of the area is such a great backdrop for Fjords. They go there like butter and jam. We didn't make it to Nordicfest as we kept busy at the show. We met some new wonderful people, Dick and Melinda Springs, Steve and Sherril Goya and others. I wanted to make aquaintance with Dagrun but didn't make it over there. We got to help Jeff and Lisa Pedersen with a little of the grooming and getting harnesses changed. I was priviledged (sp) to groom for Jeff with a couple of his classes. What a blast. I am so impressed with the composure of his team. Sunn, who is very green at this driving stuff was a brick. She did whatever was asked of her without any attitude. What a delightful mare. I have always been impressed with Juli and Hans and especially Kaiser. I am impressed that Lisa and Jeff are donating him to a theraputic riding center in Idaho. I am sure that this was pretty hard on the both of them but what an assest he will be to this cause. The classes at Libby were well run. I especially liked the idea of bringing them in at one gate and taking them out of another. The costume class was great on both junior and senior part. Amy Evers and Catherine Lassesen (sp) were up to there usual funny selves. Thanks to the committee for a good job done. Pat Wilson

This message is from: jgayle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gayle, thanks so for the news of Libby. I have always held Dusty as my favorite stallion and believe it or not Wez was my most ideal horse. I had the opportunity to watch Ann bring him up through the ranks while he was at stables where my Charley was in training in Olympia WA. These horses really let us live alot through them and their spirit. more on Libby
This message is from: Douglas Knutsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Oops. How could I have forgotten the biggest suprise for us at Libby? Just after we arrived at there on Thursday night, we learned that son Don, who was taking care of our animals and working on our house remodel, had an emergency appendectomy about 3 hours after we left. Fortunately his appendix had not ruptured. Also fortunately, we had back up folks for animal care. In fact, we had so much back up that Erlend was was getting double feedings for a couple of days. All turned out well, but it was a big shock for us add to the other Libby surprises. Peg Knutsen www.fairpoint.net/~kffjord
Libby show and Evaluation
This message is from: Douglas Knutsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi all, Libby was wonderful and, as usual, added to our file of adventure stories. The first, worst, surprise was not being able to take our stallion, Erlend, to the Eval and Show. He seems to be recovering - good news. We appreciated the tons of support and concern from everyone at the show. Finally, I pinned a sign on my back that read, Erlend is better, thank you for asking. We were hauling our friend Pat's gelding, Dan, and, since we had room in the trailer, we brought along Elvis, another gelding that Dagren Aarsten was hoping to sell for a client. Trying to get going on Thursday AM brought the usual comedy of errors. Dead battery. Lights on travel trailer not working. Heavy horse trailer window bonking Dagrun on the head and hand. [We will replace the latches] Once we got going the rest of the trip was uneventful. We set up next to the Watanabes where we had a good view of the arena. Solveig was pretty much over the moon after earning an 84 with OH Sadie in the Beginning Driving portion of the Eval. Good girls! I was delighted to see the large turnout - one of the biggest ever. An added pleasure was that so many new folks were showing. Our friend Pat [with the unpronounceable last name] won lots of ribbons with her boy Dan, in her first show ever. Dagrun also brought home many ribbons showing Elvis and Dan. Way cool! Reconnecting with Eike and his wife Suse was a real treat. Everyone loved his very informative clinic. Eike emphasized that Fjord people from other countries were very aware of and interested in what North American Fjord folks were doing and in what NFHR and separate breeders were aiming for in their programs. He also stressed the importance of developing a clear direction for what one wanted to accomplish with the breed. A particular highlight for me was seeing Greta Cook and Betsy Billeter winning first and second in Overall Equation. These women train and show their own horses with great success and deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments. You go girls! And then there was the Red Hat Stick Horse Drill Team. They sported Red and Purple hats and boas while executing complicated drills to thunderous applause! [Sorry not to have brought my red cowgirl hat, I wore red hair curlers instead.] I can hardly wait to see the video. Girls rule! Congratulations to all who took the time and effort to make this event big success. Bye, Peg Knutsen www.fairpoint.net/~kffjord

CD or DVD
This message is from: Karen Hanson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Greetings Fjord Folks, The NFHR is close to finishing a project that is archiving the historical Fjord Heralds, which started out as a newsletter in Autumn 1986. These print copies have been scanned to electronic images (PDFs) and will be stored on either CD or DVD, or both, and be made available for purchase. My question to you folks isdo you have the capability to play either CD, DVD or both on your computers? Remember that the DVD is not the type for playing on your TV, only on your computer. If you could take a moment to respond as to your preference, that would greatly assist in a decision of whether to produce on CD, DVD or a quantity of both. Many thanks! Karen Hanson - Talk is cheap. Circus Fjords
This message is from: Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] There was some mention of the four Fjords that are in the Ringling Bros Circus in this post on the Equine Studies Institute Forum: http://equinestudies.secure-mall.com/discus/index.html To read the whole thing go to last day (on the left) then to the Topic Circus Knie Video. By Allen Pogue (208.24.48.133) on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 - 08:10 am: ..snip. On the subject of Circus training, the window of opportunity to see Sacha Houcke in action (in this country) is drawing to a close. When his contract expires this season he is going back to Europe (where trainers of his caliber get the respect they deserve) to work for the Circus Pinder. I have been lucky enough to garner enough interest from him that for the last six years every time the circus comes to central Texas he has allowed me to come and spend time observing their schooling on practice days. Typically it is hard to sit on the sidelines and not ask questions, but with so many acts to work out there simply is not time.. Not so this year as he is turning them over to his daughter Karin and so we were able to spend several hours a day watching as he made observations on her work and the way the horses were responding.. What I am talking about specifically is the Liberty 'sorting' routines that made the Circus Knie so famous. Sacha during his time with Ringling Bros created acts that are reminiscent of what the circus used to be like .. Imagine a carousel of eight gray Arabians, eight Friesians and eight zebras and a palomino all in a 42 ft ring at the same time. This year's Blue unit show includes a sorting routine with four Fjord ponies and four elephants .. when they pair up and 'waltz' it is a testiment to his skill of mastering the willing adaptability of both species. snip *** Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, Glorious golden fall weather, 53 degrees today.

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, Thank you to Ron and Sherri for all the work that they did on the Fjords Farms and Friends book. I picked mine up in Libby but did not get a chance to THANK YOU for a job well done. I really enjoyed my trip to Libby. I have been hoping to get down for several years, this year it just worked out. A fantastic show with good horses and great people. I shall spread the word in Alberta that Libby is the place to go to see large numbers of Fjords. Thanks for a great time.
