Yeah, why don't they have the meeting in Florida? It is actually quite nice
this time of year, sunny and breezy--no hurricanes, mosquitoes, no seeums or
humidity that plague us from May to October. Of course, there still are
alligators and iguanas although none have dropped out of the trees onto the
arena for a couple of months now (I am not kidding). Watch me say that and one
will be waiting for me tomorrow. Although I am no fan of alligators, I think
I'll take my chances with them compared to cougars, wolves or bears. I used to
be really worried about them but you kind of get used to them. Lisa, come on
down, we won't let the alligators carry you off!

Lordy, Jean, that picture gave me the chills!!! Thought it was cold here,
only 33 but fog, also. Have been taken over by raccoons and possum
Trying to get a shot at them tonight. Had to board up the barn and cat to
keep them out. No dogs as all of mine have recently passed away. Planning
a move to town soon. I have a beautiful place between two towns, half way
to Olympia and Ocean Shores. I love it but age and balance and lifting are
pulling me down. Gunnar will be adopted by friends who have a 'WILLFUL"
mare just waiting for him!!

When you speak of arenas, mine is old fashioned at only 100x60 and enclosed.
Covered and electric, but no heat!!! But it has served me well for 27 years.
My five acres give me two fields and privacy. It is zoned R2 so when the
economy improves it will sell well, don't think I can wait.

Laurie,
You sure do have the best of both worlds! I would love to have an indoor
arena that close and other friends to ride with. There is nowhere I can go in
the winter to ride safely: sure, I do have a nice one acre field that I ride
in, fenced with a little arena in it. In February I usually clear the little
arena of snow and snow blow trails around the field. Otherwise the snow is too
deep along the road, the road is unsafe, snow machine trails are "punchy",
etc.

It is just too cold to do anything right now, at -40 again today; I drove
into Fairbanks for groceries and the ice fog was so thick that you could
hardly see tail lights! Want to see Fairbanks in winter?

not riding now

2009-01-02 Thread Linda Lehnert
This message is from: Linda Lehnert

Laurie, I'm sorry to hear about your knee problems and hope this new
orthopedic surgeon can help. Knee surgery is tricky at best. Maybe the new
one can at least find some medication or a combination of medications that
will give you some relief from the pain, but not make you high or put you to
sleep and isn't addictive.

Other posters have had some excellent suggestions about enjoying your horse by
just doing what you can when you can. I've been on disability for 20 years
with chronic pain problems and the hardest thing for me to do initially was to
learn to accept the limitations these problems imposed on my life and not
being able to do what I could do before or do it the way I used to do it.
Accepting them does not mean completely giving up; it means doing things
differently (ground work, not riding) or, in some cases, not doing them at all
(not riding, but enjoying the companionship of your horses). Just being
around them is good for you psychologically whether you ride or drive or just
watch, pet and feed or groom.

Lois, good call on the expensive nature of golf - how much do those little
bitty balls cost and how many do they lose each time they play? Not to
mention the cost of everything else. And it's boing!

I hope you can get some relief some way and wish you all the best. Please
enjoy your Fjord what ever way you can.

few days - below 0C during the night, up to around +2-3C in the day

I have a hugely drafty mare. Her father is Lukas
http://www.nfhr.org/ponyweb/ponyweb.cgi?horse=1614&HorseName=lukas&Page=1
&Sort=0 There is a photo on this site, but the photo it replaced when he
belonged to the Leaders showed how immense he is. Note his mane is cut
down almost to his neck, like I keep my mare. The crest is all horse, not
hair.

My mare's name is Half Diamond Kristi (mother was Half Diamond KristY).
She has a full brother listed, Half Diamond Kellner. Neither can be
registered with the NFHR because Uredd is the grandfather on both sides
(half brother to half sister breeding). Kellner gets to be on the NFHR
site because he has progeny, but my mare does not have any.

She is a very calm horse except on the rare occasion she gets riled
(about 3x in 4 years), then she is like a Mack truck. I call her my
Xtreme mare.

truthfully, the ex and i were so separate that holidays with my family

having oz where he is is the same as having him at home. i board because then
i have unlimited arena access, a warm and dry place for my tack, and i know
he will get fed. because i am on the same property as the boarding barn, his
pasture comes right up to the fence of the old barn where charlie and gizmo
live
behind the house i rent. the old barn is difficult to keep clean, and has
small doors which always require snow and/or ice removal in the winter to get
them open. oz has even spent the night inside that barn. and if i opened the
gate, he could share the pasture with the others. i board him for the riding
amenities and consider it money well spent. when i can and do ride, i have a
safe,
dry spot to do it, and friends for chatting and support. i guess it's the best
of both worlds.

laurie, and oz who knows he has two sources for food. he just has to walk a
bit to get to them.

thanks, lois. your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated. and i can
sure love the big guy on the ground, i did that for the first two years i had
him, and while i recovered from my initial knee surgery. i sure don't consider
getting rid of him as a solution to any of my problems.

i also am sure that finding a way to alleviate the pain will make taking care
of my other animals easier. charlie and gizmo are here to stay, i would not
give them away nor sell them, since they require handling that i wouldn't ask
anyone else to do. someone suggested just moving to an apartment and that was
so very unappealing. i will find a way, and my chore girl comes home on
sunday,
so that will help a lot.

oz is my peace and laughter. he stays.

This is so well said, Lois. One can get so much satisfaction and
soul-felt comfort from just being around a horse. It is not necessary to
have them doing something for you all of the time. They are doing
something for you by just being there.

If Karen is willing to share it, she is not "just" doing this with her

Oh, Lois, this quote is a keeper. I married into a family of golfers who have
always just thought I was nutty to have horses -- "They're so expensive." My
very first horse property was a 3-acre place in Florida that we had to clear
and fence ourselves. The first time my avid golfer MIL came to visit, she
took a walk around and proclaimed it smelled like horse poop. Arrggghhh! The
only thing that saved the marriage was moving far away from the inlaws. :^P
