Montana Update
This message is from: Michele Noonan fjordl...@hotmail.com Hi Everyone. The weather has been Teasing us that spring is here.. We have been out riding and working with horses for most of the month. You watch we will have a foot of snow in a few weeks We have been affected by the economy also.. We took a 30% pay cut... Ouch..but atleast we are still working! I still have 3 very nice now yearlings for sale. This is definitely the year for us to offer great deals to first time fjord owners or repeat owners. We have for your consideration.. WHR Axel and WHR Bjorgen (soon to be gelded) yearlings, born in April and May last year. These two are 1/2 brothers and boy do they look a lot alike.. Axel is a smidge taller than Bjorgen but in the winter we couldn't tell them apart well.. Anvil's Morgen is their sire. Dam of Axel is Freya ll and Dam of Bjorgen is Britta . Bjorgen took first place in the weanling class at Libby this fall. They both lead, trim, trailer, etc There is a picture of Bjorgen in the In hand trail class in the Libby section of the Fjord Herald, It was mis labeled WHR Chris,, but it is really Bjorgen Price is $999 each or a deal for the pair We also have an ever so sweet yearling gelding RED DUN WHR Kris.. He was born in the winter so he is quite a bit bigger than the other yearlings.. His mom is a drafty blue ribbon mare Two Rivers Kare and his sire is WHR Elsker He is a very sweet, calm fellow. He went to Libby and did the in hand trail class and halter.. He has a lot of bone and will be a good sized boy. He is exceptionally sweet. We are asking $1700 for him. You can go to our website WWW.Montanafjords.com to see more pictures,, but email us if you have any questions ( We are only 4 hours from Spokane Washington and even closer to Idaho) I do have them posted on the fjord list advertising also. We are looking forward to our only two babies this spring due end of April and early May! We also have been enjoying watching our young gray stallion OFI Skogen (OH Sadie-Flotren) figure out that he isn't a baby anymore.. He is two this year and is growing like a weed. We have been working with him a lot so that he remembers his manners while he figures out the testosterone! We attended the NFHR meeting in Seattle and had a wonderful time and came home refreshed and ready to plan the next few years evaluations and shows. Now I just need to find that pot of gold HAHA Michele Noonan Wild Hair Ranch Stevensville, MT _ Get more out of the Web. sore front feet
This message is from: Claudia cava...@bloomer.net Hi Mary, Have you seen the product called Sole Guard on the Vettec website? It was just discussed on the CD-L so I looked it up. It is goo that you apply to the sole, which apparently holds for about three weeks, and during that time protects the sole from sharp ice, hard ground, etc. I've had horses develop laminitis from getting their soles bruised on the ice, and the only real answer is to protect the sole until the ground softens up. Keep the horse in a bedded paddock, put on Easy Boots, put on shoes and pads, whatever works. And bute, to keep the inflammation from getting out of hand. The thing that I thought was good about the Soleguard goo is that it fills into the grooves and provides frog pressure, much like a heartbar shoe would do, and therefore treats a little bit and protects at the same time. Another solution would be the Ground Control shoes, which are acrylic with some flex to them. They are very nice, and provide protection to the sole as well as traction. I don't think they would be slippery on snow and ice, but you would have to ask the vendor. My farrier said they were very easy to put on, and he liked them for my Fjord. He is barefoot now, but if he got sore, I would go back to the Ground Controls. Good luck--it is so worrying to have a sore horse. This message is from: Beth Pulsifer magicm...@roadrunner.com Thank you for sharing this information with us Claudia. Several of us are having similar problems with sore feet... This sounds like it might be just what we need. I am going to check it out. foot problems
This message is from: brass-ring-f...@juno.com Wow, this is interesting. Sounds like sore feet in mares is epidemic. How odd. At least her xrays have come back perfectly clean, no damage and her soles are not thin. That's the very good news. Certainly all the usual laminitis starters are missing, no grass, no grain, no road founder (the vet asked if she could have run around crazily on the frozen ground. She is in with a 24 year old Morgan. I answered, that's a thought..but no. They really do not move much), no shots yet, no change in routine, no change in feed. So, as you say, what triggered it? I am not going to be much help here because we have done the same thing for 5 years running and never had any problem until now. She too is on bute and isoxuprine. I bought her some Sabre Sneakers to live in. I am glad to hear your mare got better. As soon as mine is, she is getting front shoes and pads, even though riding season is not quite here. I guess I will have to spring for winter shoes for the next 6 weeks because I do not want her slipping and nursing something else! I am also going to get her thyroid and insulin checked when she is better during spring shots. I think it is early for Cushings, she is 11, though I know it does happen. I am on the Cushings list with my Morgan, so have learned too much. Tallest fjord ever?
This message is from: Ardeth Obenauf laz...@united.net My 2 yr 7 mo. old gelding, Reidar, is nearly 15h 2. Since we have obviously left ponyhood way behind, I'm wondering how far we have to set the record as the tallest fjord? :). ao Ardeth Obenauf The Lazy AO Farm Shelbyville, TN Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
clippers
This message is from: Tom Rounsville trounsvi...@stny.rr.com I know that this was already a discussion, but at the time my old clipper's were working. Now that they have died. I would like to know a good clipper to use on the fjord mane. RE: foot problems
This message is from: Mary Sergeant mkserge...@gmail.com When my mare (Ingrid) was examined by the vet for her sore front feet, I asked about Cushing's. I am very familiar with it because there was a 32 year old mare in our barn that had Cushing's, and I had a Peruvian Paso gelding with DSLD that I had to have euthanized last year. The DSLD group has a lot of information about Cushing's and IR. My vet didn't think Cushing's was a factor because she had no other symptoms. After the x-rays came back clean, the vet was actually kind of stumped, but the treatment was the same for laminitis or sore feet...bute and sneakers. When I first got my Fjords, my farrier was really impressed with their feet, both in the shape and strength of the hoof. The x-rays confirmed that Ingrid had great soles: thick and even. My farrier also mentioned Sole Guard and had some with him to show me. I think it could be a viable option. The Soft-Ride boots with the orthotic inserts were great, but were starting to show wear. The vet charged $160 per boot (including the orthotic). On the Soft-Ride website, the charge is $235 for 2 boots, including the orthotics. Not cheap to keep your kid in those expensive sneakers. Also, it seems like Ingrid's feet would not harden on their own as long as she was wearing the comfortable sneakers. Thank you to everyone who posted, including Valarie who started this post. It is nice to know you aren't the only one experiencing a problem, and all of the suggestions are great. Ingrid is fine right now, but a little miffed that healthy feet mean she has to work again. I think she thought she was retired. This message is from: plumg...@pon.net plumg...@pon.net The Cushings list talks about a substitute for bute because bute has adverse consequences for Cushings or pre-Cushings horses. Is anyone currently familiar with the protocol? I think it was jiagolon??? Re: Tallest fjord ever?
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Ardeth, My big gelding, Bjorken, is all of 15h-2. but he continued to grow until he was 8 years old, so I expect your gelding will outdo him in height! I predict that he will top out at least 15h-3. Bjorken's dam is Stella II, sire is Anvil's Rikolv. Stella is 14h3, Rikolv is about the same.
