Good point Claudia, but in my experience of seeing people do restorations,
there is usually more there to work with. Most of what was there was broken
leather. I didn't see much hand wrought work, mostly cast pieces that were
broken or cracked.

I heard from Pam Garza and Shawna Smith that the horses Joel Harmon consigned
did very well. They sold as pairs, one went for around $2400 (ea. horse), the
other pair went for about $2700 each. One pair will stay in Oregon, the other
will be going to Canada. Apparently Grayson did not make reserve, so unless he
was sold privately at the sale, he is still looking for a home. The Fjord
mares that were cataloged did not make it to the sale.

It may look like rusty junk to some, but I have a friend who could buy a

replica of the original will be finished and ready to use.

consignment horses?

2009-04-20 Thread FoxxRidge
This message is from: foxxri...@aol.com

Hi
I will be sending a couple of young horses to Carol at Beaver Dam Farm
later this year and am checking to see if anyone has a consignment horse that
needs a ride north to Nova Scotia as there may be room on the trailer.
The economic situation in the U.S. is bad, but I believe there will
always be a market for high quality Fjordhorses. If you have a horse to sell,
and that horse is well bred with very good conformation, temperament,
training, and movement, then there are buyers out there who can afford to buy,
even in bad times. These buyers don't worry about feed costs.
We've worked with Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm for many years, and in
fact, all of our original stock was purchased from BDF. -- Carol has done
a great job for us over the years, and always made the right decisions for
our horses. And that's why we plan on sending two of our home-bred
Fjorrds to Beaver Dam this spring. Carol has had 30 years experience
breeding,
training, and selling Fjords. She's been successful year after year,
through good times and bad, and the reason she's had this success for all
these
years is Beaver Dam Farm's reputation for high quality Fjordhorses.
The horses we're sending meet Beaver Dam's standards of bloodlines,
conformation, temperament, movement, and we at Fox Ridge Fjords have done
everything possible to be sure our horses have developed their full potential.
 By
this I mean we've provided the best nutrition, exercise, handling, and
training. Our horses are ready to go to Beaver Dam Farm.
Having spent time at BDF, we know personally what to expect for our
horses. We know how and where they'll be stabled, and we know the size and
topography of Beaver Dam's pastures. -- We're thrilled that our horses will
have the advantage of running up and down hills in immense grassy pastures.
This is exactly what Fjords need in order to develop their potential.
Beaver Dam Farm always has trainers on the farm. From early spring to
late fall, they have a wonderful group of talented interns from all over
Canada, the U.S., Europe and even Russia. -- These girls have been
hand-picked
by Carol from amongst a lot of applicants. They're all experienced
riding, training, and showing, and all have a dressage background. Some of
the
Europeans are Fjordhorse owners. --
We're particularly excited about sending our horses to BDF this season as
Carol is hosting some very interesting clinics during the summer. Bob
Giles is doing a clinic in August, and in fact, will be at Beaver Dam Farm for
most of the summer, teaching and training.
In June, Clay Maier, from California, is coming to BDF to do a clinic on
Classical Long-Lining. If you're interested, take a look at Beaver Dam
Farm's website for lots more information. I'm excited about these clinics,
and hope to be able to attend one or both.
If you are interested in sending a horse along with mine contact me at
_foxxri...@aol.com_ (mailto:foxxri...@aol.com)
Thanks!

Midwest Horse Fair

2009-04-20 Thread Dave and Patti Walter
This message is from: Dave and Patti Walter dwal...@tm.net

Home from a LONG 4 days of the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, WI. WHAT A GREAT
TIME!!! The weather was GREAT until Sunday afternoon, then it started to rain,
but we had gorgeous weather, HUGE crowds, and the HORSES WERE FANTASTIC!

I'll get a DVD up on youtube probably in a week or two will keep you posted on
that. I'll get some pics on my website too, got some nice shots.

This years theme was Super Horse. We went off on a shoot of Superman. All
the breastcollars had the S logo on them, and their fearless leader, me, was
wearing a superman cap, and logo on their shirt. We rode to the music of The
Theme Song from Superman, SuperHero by Go Fish , and Holding out for a
hero-Flash Dance song.

We had a drill team pattern that we performed with Tyler Schlickman driving
single, Riders were: Dawn Schlickman, Jessica Reuterskiold, Nancy Hotovy, Ali
Austin, Joni Griffin, Patti Jo Walter. We did the pinwheel and 7 abreast, 6
riders and the cart. I was next to the cart and GLAD Tyler was a great driver,
have to say fearless leader was a tad nervous so close to the cart, but we
were fine. :-) Also did some cool moves, cart weaving us riders, and a weave
of all riders down the center line. That was cool. Superman also jumped over
tall buildings in a single bound! I had a jump made of tall buildings. First
time around, I didn't set him up right and he tried to duck out and he hit the
cavelleties and it fell over, so Super horse Voss can jump tall building in a
single bound or totally destroy them, he's that strong! He was GREAT all the
other jumps and cleared it easily as he is a nice jumper, just rider error
first time thru.

Met a lot of great folks, some new owners, many wanna be owners and many many
lovers of the Fjords.

GREAT to be home, April is always a hard month as I do two horse fairs, but
always great to get out their with the Fjords , met people and just have a
GREAT time with the horses and friends.

THANKS to Joni Griffin who decorated our hospitality booth, she turned it into
the DAILY PLANET, what a great booth we had!
THANKS to all our riders, everyone worked hard at remembering the pattern and
putting up with me!
THANKS to our GREAT breed, don't think it could be done with many of the other
breeds. We don't get to practice besides on foot. Oh you have an outdoor ring
to warm up in , but you share that with about 20 other riders. Impossible to
do your pattern and pretty much impossible to drive out there. We come from
3-4 different states, so no practice ahead of time. Horses don't know each
other, the coliseum is BIG, our demo times were the BEST, crowds were big,
noise was loud! Horses were rock solid and all riders were experienced that
does help, but really helps to have a GREAT horse to start with.

Oh, Joni and I survived our Side Saddle, not bragging but think we were the
best! heheehe We both w/t/c and did side passing, and pivots. AGAIN GREAT
GREAT horses!
I had a BLAST with Jane Savoie, she is GREAT. Was in her first demo. Of Course
she loved Voss.

It's s GREAT to have a Fjord, you really can have a large opportunity of
having great adventures with your horse.

Hope I didn't forget anyone or anything big thanks to all, helps when you have
a good group and everyone pitches in and does their thing.

Here's a suggestion but there would have to be some geographic relevance to
make it work. A horse swap. I take yours, you take mine. We get to know
their personalities and good and bad habits. After the novelty of the new
horse wears off we are either eager to get our own back or eager to keep
swapping hoping there may be a permanent swap. Occasionally I have
contemplated buying a summer place with pasture and barn around Tryon, NC
(real horse country) but how do I enjoy a horse for several weeks before
having to go back to the permanent home on the golfcourse? So I thought a
swap would work there too.somebody gets to send one of their horses on
a vacation to my pastures which gives a possibly ignored horse some TLC
attention, reduces their horse care and expenses temporarily and the
horsenut (me) gets to play a bit with the pony and then send it back.
Something like having grandkids come to think of it.

What is CEM

2009-04-20 Thread Green Valley Farm
This message is from: Green Valley Farm sop...@greenvalleyfarm.com

WHAT IS CEM ?
Contagious Equine Metritis

According to Gluck researchers (The Gluck Equine Research Center, College
of Agriculture at the University Kentucky), CEM is a sexually transmitted
disease that only affects members of the equine family. It does not present
an immediate risk of spread to the general horse population as long as state
and federal regulations are followed. The disease can only be transmitted by
sexual contact and is most frequently spread when a stallion breeds a mare.
It may also be transmitted through artificial insemination or contact with
contaminated hands or any objects that have been in contact with the
genitalia of infected stallions or mares. Stallions are symptom-free
carriers of the bacterium Taylorella equigenitalis. Infected mares can
develop inflammation of the reproductive tract, which can result in
temporary infertility.

Researchers said there are no reports of transmission of infection to
pregnant mares except at the time of breeding. Only two confirmed cases of
abortion due to this bacterium have been reported in the past 30 years. CEM
can be treated effectively with a wide range of disinfectants and
antibiotics. Strict hygiene should be observed after contact with horses
that test positive for Taylorella equigenitalis. CEM is not known to be
transmissible to humans.

The transmission rate is high and naturally occurs by mating, but
contaminated instruments and equipment may be an indirect source of
infecting mares and stallions. The bacteria can also be spread via semen
collected for artificial insemination.

State and federal animal health personnel have conducted the investigation
by examining the breeding records and movement history of each infected
horse to find other exposed animals. At each step, any exposed animals are
quarantined, tested and treated. Owners of exposed animals are contacted by
state or federal animal health officials. There is no need for them to have
their animals tested if they have not been contacted.

CEM is considered a foreign animal disease in the United States. It was
first discovered in Europe in 1977, and countries known to be affected
include Norway, Holland, Denmark and Germany.

When Kastanjegardens Fernando was imported from Denmark in 2000 he completed
his six weeks of quarantine and was certified CEM negative. The Illinois
Department of Agriculture notified Green Valley Farm in March, 2009 that
Fernando was possibly exposed to a bacterial infection in 2005 at a breeding
facility in Wisconsin. He was tested and found positive and is undergoing
the extensive CEM treatment protocol and will be released after
demonstrating he tests negative for the disease.

When Green Valley Farm received this information, we immediately decided to
be pro active and transparent. We have taken the immediate steps, complied
with all government requests for breeding information and are voluntarily
proceeding with testing all of our breeding mares and stallions. It is our
goal to once again have a CEM free breeding farm, educate other breeders and
to help eradicate CEM from all equine breeds.

We wish to thank all of our Fjord friend and clients for their support,
understanding and encouragement. We will keep our Fjord community updated
with important information.

We were about to send this article just as we received an important update.
We tested 5 mares who had been bred to Fernando by live cover from 2001 to
2005 and then three of the mares with frozen semen from 2005 through 2008.
These five mares were cultured three times over a period of two weeks and we
just received the wonderful news that all five mares have tested negative.
This probably tell us that Fernando did not have CEM before 2005 and that
the bacteria was not passed through the frozen semen used from 2005 through
2008

Sincerely,
Howard Sophie Fiedler

I am totally in favor of a horse community where all that land is for horse
pastures and the club house is the barn/arena complex where competent people
look after the animals and *esp* the manure! We could live in condos or
garden homes that are beautifully landscaped and someone else takes care of
all the mowing, pruning, show removal, etc. We could watch our horses from
our individual paddocks or small pastures behind the house, and go trail
riding or driving along the cart paths or up into the adjacent
national/state parkland. Etc. That's the kind of development I want to

Marketing success story

2009-04-20 Thread Willows Edge Farm
This message is from: Willows Edge Farm i...@willowsedgefarm.com

What started as an idea to help promote our Farm Camp as well as our
Norwegian Fjord horses grew into something we could not have ever imagined.

We wanted to do this cool thing: offer pony rides on all Norwegian Fjord
horses and use all the proceeds to benefit one of the local horse rescues.
We wanted to make it bigger than just pony rides though .we're having Ole's
first West coast foal. Let's make it a celebration! was our thought. We had
media coverage - and friend after friend telling each other about it!

In all we had 11 stations set up with the Pony Rides being the huge hit.we
had an hour long line all day and finally cut off sales at 1pm.

Round and round they went, with little water and cookie breaks, for 4 hours.
Lena only did a little over 2 hours as she started to get a little timid
around all those people. Did I mention we had 696 people come through in
those 4 hours? Most of whom had never seen a Norwegian Fjord horse before.

I enjoy promotions, so this was a really fun thing for me to do. I also know
we have a great insurance policy and a wonderful grounds keeper (thanks to
my hubby Scott). I know most people don't want to open their farms up to
this kind of liability. BUT, if you are interested, feel free to drop me a
line. I would love to help you organize an event of your own to help promote
the Fjord horses in your area.

 WHAT IS CEM ?
 Contagious Equine Metritis

  Howard and Sophie,

Thank-you for the informative article on CEM. Interesting how the Fjords
in a small way can help discover how, when and why the infection begins and
has moved around so much. Thinking here that the information gained from
this exposure will help some of the large farms work their way to
understanding about its spread. I congratulate you on the full disclosure about
it
getting to your stallion. I know that many people would not have taken the high
road and enlightened us about all the steps involved.

 You guys are class acts.

Speedy negitive tests so you can get on with the art of breeding that
beautiful boy. If closer, I have a few mares who I wouldnt hesitate to book to
him.

 Lisa
