Parades? How about a performance demonstration at Equine Affaire?

2009-10-05 Thread revivant

Hi everyone,

All this talk about doing a parade... Is anybody interested in doing a Fjord
Breed demonstration at the Pomona, CA Equine Affaire next February?
Vestlandshest is in the early stages of planning to have a booth in the Breed
Pavilion and hopefully also a demo. Kathy Kramer is organizing the performance
demo. Coincidentaly I was speaking with Kathy this morning and she is looking
for driving, english and western turnouts.

Equine Affaire is pretty good about supporting people who bring horses for the
demos. If you bring your horse exclusively to do a demo, you get a stall for 24
hours and 2 free tickets to the event for the day of the demo.

The fairgrounds in Pomona is a really nice facility. If you are interested,
contact Kathy at (951) 657-2566 or ka...@westcoastfjords.com.

Fjords and saddles

2009-10-05 Thread brass-ring-farm
This message is from: brass-ring-f...@juno.com

My Fjord mare has a very round back. The ortho-flex fits her nicely but I
do notice when we go down steep hills, it feels like it is going to tip
way forward. It is English rigging so I can't put a back cinch on it. It
is plenty tight enough. It does not roll side to side, just this pitching
forward feeling on somewhat extreme terrain.

I have had 2 Fjords, both have been hard to fit in that they are so roly
poly. The other horses I have had have been Morgans. Even the most round
ones do not compare to the no-withers-at-all of these 2 Fjords. For the
English saddle on the other Fjord I used the Limpet pad which kind of
bonded with her skin. This Fjord now though, has an itchy problem which
manifests in her rolling as soon as the saddle is pulled off (and 4x
while I was riding her), so I do not want to use neoprene or anything
that makes her sweat (or itch) more.

Just adding my 2 cents worth that - yes - Fjords are hard to fit.

Yes, Beth, that is sort of correct, you submit your entry info May, then they
go into selection. That's another reason we scratched entering as we couldn't
find some one soon enough to replace the person that bailed & complete the
minimum # for an entry.

If I remember correctly, didn't you have to have your application into
the Rose Parade organizers by June of the previous year?

When I was talking with someone about our quadrille performing at a
one-evening performance at the Del Mar show (The Night of the Horse, or
something like that) it was going to cost around $3,500 - $5,000.00
(can't remember which) just to get our team there, using our own
trucks/trailers. That didn't count food, stabling, etc., just getting there.

So...anyone up for a sponsorship? ;-)

Enumclaw horse auction

2009-10-05 Thread Pedfjords
This message is from: pedfjo...@aol.com

Just FYI, for those thinking that horse auctions are a good place
to make a little money and unload horses right now, the results from the big
Enumclaw Horse sale are posted on the FUGLY daily blog. Everything from OTT
TB's grandkids of Seattle Slew, broke to death pack string and dude ranch
horses, Paints, minis, oldsters that ride great and assorted arabs, ponys,
QH's, donkeys, papered, broke and projects all mostly went for under 300 bucks.
30 went to the kill buyers. I did not see any Fjords listed, but look for
the 2 from Myrtle Point to go to the Hermiston one soon. I know that Waverly
Iowa Horse auction ( comming up soon ) usually also has Fjords go through.
People suck sometimes.Lisa

No Mother Goose here. but I could do it. Maybe not this year, new grandbaby
due in Nov. I am open to a parade though. Norco has parades too. If your
horse can travel the streets of Norco you can do a small parade.

I think this is something that sound like fun, but then as you point out you
find you are leaping directly to the "professional" ranks.  Maybe some of the
southern CA Fjord folk might consider starting a little smaller like the Jamul
parade I entered last week.  You have to gather at the staging grounds (Jamul
primary school) about an hour before parade time.  The parade route is 1.5
miles.  You can participate in the Gymkhana afterward if you want, but it's
not mandatory.

I was thinking next year I would try to organize a larger entry in the Jamul
parade and maybe even think about the mother goose parade (week Before
thanksgiving in El Cajon). but I don't know if that is as complicated as  the
Rose Parade.  has anybody on the list ever done Mother Goose parade?

Years back I got online and researched the parade application. It was like 5
pages long. Who would not want FJORDS in their parade? I am NOT one for
"cocktails" for my horse before ANY work.

Beth and Sandy? well those 2 are capable of anything they choose to
undertake.

I have silver (real) on my saddle I never use. I ride in my Crates that is
nice and light and liftable.

If the committee saw a photo of Regn they would pay me to have her in the
parade.

LA Eq. Center is a wonderful facility. The city of Pasadena is nice, LA as
a whole, in my opinion is a pit. Again this MY opinion only.

Back when I was doing alot more parades I seriously considered entering a
group of Fjords in the RP about 9 (?) years ago. Someone in our group had an
"in" w/ the RP commitee and so we applied.
It is a very rigorous undertaking. You don't 'just enter'. You have to do a
pre-application to get through the door, then you are sent a binder that must
be completed listing every rider/horse with accomplishments & photos down to
the nth detail - they even wanted to know if the silver on the show saddles
was sterling or plate!
Well, when one of our group decided to bail on us, we sort of lost momentum in
finding a replacement, and we didn't send in the final app. I think I still
have the binder floating around somewhere...
Yes, you DO have to be prepared to park your rig on a closed off section of
freeway late the night before, and you you also have to agree to have your
horse evaluated by the RP vets before embarking on the 5 mile parade route. If
they deem your horse needs it, you HAVE to accept them administering a
'cocktail', or abandon the parade. It is also a requirement now that you also
participate in the Equine Festival before the parade, and I think this is now
a big affair, and may take place days before the parade, thus be prepared to
be in LA for quite awhile. I believe they stable and hold the pre-parade
doings at the LA Eq. Center. Can't remeber if you needed to pay for boarding,
but I would assume so.
