RE: Anemia/ EPSM and Horse keeping on a small amount of land
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi All - My Fjord, Sonnie tested positive for EPSM about 3-4 years ago and is on the hi fat low carb diet and doing great! This Summer though, he seemed kind of lethargic during the marathon portion of a CDE. We had him tested - he came back anemic - his RBC 6.84, (low) Hematocrit 28.6 (low) and hemoglobin 9.8 (low). I contacted Dr. Valentine - she's been helping us all along with his EPSM - she thought it might have been the heat, hard work, etc... I did end up putting him on a supplement "Equine; Erytho Hip" for Anemia. He's been on it for about 6 weeks now, I drove him yesterday - he seemed like his old self. I will have his blood tested again in a couple more weeks to see if it is helping. Has anyone every heard of the "Equine, Ertho hip"? Expensive stuff, but where I board him, its easier to use all powdered supplements and mix them in advance for the barn help rather than doing Red Cell. On another note, does anyone on the list keep their fjords at home on a small amount of acreage? Like less than 2? Any insights would be helpful. We have our house for sale (in hopes of buying a small farm)and its not selling - may just look into setting up some type of "farmette" here...Thanks!!! Nancy
RE: Info on Moving to Memphis, Tn

Is there anyone on this list that lives there or has lived there in the past? We just wanted to know what the weather, property and area was like. Are there any driving clubs in this area? Thanks! RE: EPSM in Fjords
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> "Jean, this is an interesting article. Has anyone out there had a problem with EPSM in Fjords? Carol 'n Patrick in Ct " Hi Carol and All - my fjord Sonnie has EPSM - luckily Vivian was judging a show and advised me to have a muscle biopsy - I did and it came back positive. Now on his diet consisting of alfalfa pellets and oil (2 cups per day) he is staying sound and has alot more nrg than before. It has been 3 years since this all happened. We had called in our vet multiple times over the years - "he's kinda off, he's kinda stiff, he doesn't have any nrg etc" and the vet would have us bute him for awhile and cut his "sweet feed". She said he was too fat and is not built for dressage - ridden or driven. I NEVER would work him hard for 2 days in a row cuz I knew the 2nd day he would be "cranky" and would have a hard time using his hiney. This was a very well respected vet from one of the best Equine Hospitals in New England - she just wasn't aware of EPSM. After 3 years on this diet he has been competing in CDE's, Prelim Level and staying REALLY sound! Little stiff to the right, but who isn't at one time or another? Alot of my friends have switched their horses to a hi fat low carb diet and noticed better attitudes, better coats more good nrg! I thought Sonnie would get really fat on this diet, but he didn't - just more muscle! As always Vivian, if your reading this - Thank you, thank you, thank you! Nancy and Sonnie in Exeter, NH PS - I'm going to try Joy dishwashing soap to get Sonnies oil off - he's covered in it - ears and all!

RE: Schleese and Albion Dressage Saddles
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi - does anyone have any experience with either of these saddles? Good or bad. Sounds like the Schleese saddles are actually "fitted" to the horse and rider, guaranteed to fit and have a good long "trial" period. Any input? Thanks - Nancy and Sonnie in NH
EPSM
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi everyone. This is Nancy. I have been off the list for months due to computer problems. But, I'm back on now and need help. With the help of Vivian Creigh and her keen eye, my horse Sonnie has been diagnosed with EPSM. (We had a muscle biopsy done and it came back positive just yesterday) I have e-mailed Dr Valentine and gotten allot of great ideas from her, but was wondering if any of you out there have dealt with this disease and could give me some input as to what diet has worked well for you. She mentions allot about alfalfa and alfalfa products, do any of you use these? If so why? His selenium and vitamin e test has not come back yet. If anyone has any input, I would love to hear from you, you can e-mail directly if you want. It seems like with the correct diet he will be ok, but I'll tell ya, he really doesn't seem to like alfalfa pellets and oil and he's only getting 1/2 cup right now. I'm supposed to up him to at least 2 cups. I would REALLY appreciate your thoughts on this! Thanks - Nancy

glory bit
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi - I too use a glory bit. I have ridden Sonnie in a eggbutt snaffle for years and driven him in a uxeter kimberwick (soft cheek position) for years. I went to a lisa Singer clinic a few months ago. She suggested the glory butterfly bit. I splurged and bought one. The weather was so bad that I have really been unable to drive in it, but I was able to ride with it - I removed the leather curbing strap and again just used it in soft cheeck (can't remember how to spell cheek? Too early for me!) He has been awesome! He has been S good, that I have to make the lessons short cause I think he's really using his hiney. His canter is excellent. No leaning - soft - flexible. The only thing is, he seems to bite his cheek and bleed - a little - very little bit. At first I thought it was just carrot juice and curtailed all snacks prior to riding. Then I brought in the vet - she thought he had very fat cheeks (spelling? sorry) and filed a couple of points down. She is coming again and is going to put a bit rest that should help. Has anyone else had this problem? I love the bit and really wanted to get a riding one also, but the blood bothers me. I thought the problem was corrected, but I had a friend ride him last week (we still have a right lead problem - rider error I am sure) she got after him for coming against her hands - she a good rider - and sure enough - he bled a little bit. Sorry so long - this has been bugging me for a long time. See ya - Nancy In NH
meadowbrook
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Tammy - we have a meadowbrook and have used it for 4-5 years and love it - but are now interested in getting something higher (I look at Sonnies butt - can never see in front of me) We are thinking of getting a 4 wheel - Lisa P - where did you get your Bird in Hand? Anyone else with ideas on various vehicles? Ernie and I just got wheels (truck and trailer) this past summer and want to start doing CDEs - Whats the advantage of 2 verse 4 wheel vehicles? What about the Bell Crown? Laurie from Washington has a 2 wheel Bell Crown and likes it - anyone ever have one of theyre 4 wheel vehicles? Thanks - Nancy from NH - I'll go back to lurking and hibernating...
Fjord Show in Holland in Year 2000
This message is from: "Botte, Ernie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello - Just returned from our trip to Denmark and Norway. Got to see a few fjords and talk to a gentleman who was taking his fjords to Hamburg for the driving championships. We understand that every five years there is a fjord show in Holland. We think its going to be in the year 2000. Does anyone have information on when and where the show will be. Thanks, Nancy and Ernie fro NH.
