Brian, please keep us posted as to how you & your fjords do. I'm sure there
will be trepidation for you & your horses after such an occurrence. These
horses are so smart & have unbelievable memories. If you have to do some
desensitizing or retraining, please keep us posted so we can all benefit & also
learn. Or hopefully your horses have such trust in you that their will be no
serious repercussions. Glad you shared with us & most of all that all are
physically OK. Of course it will take time for all to heal mentally, but hope
that mental healing will happen speedily.

I can identify with you on excitement in a different setting. The first time we
took Tunix to a show at a covered arena the echo, PA system, clapping, all
frightened Tunix. As I was sitting on him I could feel his heart POUNDING.
Never felt that on a horse before. He did finally calm down & we did OK. For
the casual observer he would have looked OK.
My Zoe, who had been in a small heard of Fjord mares before I acquired her,
came unglued when she saw neighboring horses for her first number of outings,
they were lions tigers & bears. It took some miles for her to realize they are
horses & its OK. I definitely feel that Fjords know their own breed & act
differently towards other breeds. I have a new riding friend who recently
lives nearby. She brought her fjords with her from Holland. My two like their
new Fjord buddies

I never cease to be amazed @ these horses. We've had Tunix about 15 years here
in Calif. & it doesn't rain much. But when it does rain I feed the horses early
& put them away. Well it rained today & Tunix remembers they get fed early.
He comes down to the back door & lets us know that it's time to be fed! In
good weather, he never comes down to be fed this early, but he's made the
connection & remembers! These horses have a memory like an elephant.

Meeting

2015-02-20 Thread me.kint
This message is from: "me.kint"

I attended the NFHR annual meeting & eval for the first time. It was great to
meet people who keep our organization running & those who are active
participants in promoting our Fjords: Pat, Phil, Lori, & Beth. Being out there
& DOING takes a lot of time & effort as well as resources. I so much
appreciate all of the hard work in the planning & putting together of this
event. Big surprise for me is that Lori Albrough has a Bachelor of Mathematics
degree. I know of her great riding & wonderful stallion Mogly but didn't know
of her mathematical abilities. She gave an interesting presentation of
statistics & affects on scoring. Phil also shared a wealth of knowledge along
with photos of the history of the breed. The evaluators, Pat & Brian need to
be commended also...for giving of their time & love of the breed. Evaluators
have long hard days concentrating to check each horse. I need to take a nap
just thinking about it.
So many friendly people in our organization, I got to also meet some list
members including Steve. We didn't get to view all of the evals & tests, but I
saw a few Fjords & handlers that inspired me to get out & work more with my
two. The owners/handlers had obviously put in a lot of work with their horses
& was a pleasure to watch. We all know good performance is no accident.
Again, a big THANK YOU to everyone who keeps our organization running & all
that made up this event

EMS

2015-02-10 Thread me.kint
This message is from: "me.kint"

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is mentioned in the most recent Smart Pak
edition. This topic was brought up a while back & I asked if EMS could be
inherited. Smart Pak says it's "more common in 'easy keeper' types such as pony
breeds, Morgan's, gained horses, Arabians, & warmbloods, EMS is likely to be an
inherited trait". It sure could be an interesting study or record keeping by
breeders, or Registry (if that would be possible) to see if there is a strong
prevalence to certain blood lines, stallions. This could be of help to
breeders if there is a connection.

I'm not a breeder or seller of Fjords but I would hope that evaluations would
give biggest equal weight to conformation & disposition then next in importance
-movement. Hopefully with good conformation a fjord would have a life without
soundness issues & would have good movement not impeded by poor conformation.
And temperament/disposition--kind, willing to work are what our Fjords our
known for. But unfortunately our system only allows a superficial evaluation of
temperament by evaluators. The European system of evaluating temperament &
trainability is a better more reliable, predictable system of evaluating
temperament plus the ability to pass those qualities on to progeny are
important in the final licensing of a stallion. I'm not aware of all the Fjord
stallions in the USA that are licensed in Europe but a few I know of are Felix,
Marnix, Mogly, & Prydarson. It's too bad that our system does not have more
money (wealth) to enable our evaluators to have a further mea!
ns of evaluating the all important temperament.
Of course don't forget the all important mare. Her attributes are very
important to the final outcome-- foals. You can't expect a good stallion to
completely correct a poor quality mare in what is produced. A good temperament
in a mare is not enough. Conformation & movement are equally important IMHO.

"chew them open."
The Ingenuity of a good fjord is amazing. Many years ago I learned to not leave
a rope halter ($$) on Tunix traveling in the trailer--web or leather is much
better. He accidentally got his rope halter caught (beyond me how he did it)
while traveling in the trailer. There was no panic or thrashing about in the
trailer. Instead when we arrived at the destination, he had chewed the
halter($$) loose!

New topic: can Our Fjords read our minds?
We take our 2 down to a neighbors 1-2 times a week at their invitation. They
have a different soil than us & get lush grasses beginning in Nov. We have
next to none. So I walk the horses down in the morning & go fetch them several
hours later. This way I get exercise too, round trip its 1.6 miles. Well
lately, while walking to our friends with the horses, I check the time &
mentally decide what time I will go fetch Tunix & Zoe. Today & several days ago
the horses left the lush 10 acre pasture & went up to the house (I don't have
so far to go fetch them) just about exactly at the time I decided to go get
them! There is very little grass & weeds up at the house, winter grass which
is mostly brown in California. They've done this other times too. I know it
is Tunix who makes the decisions; he is the herd leader. With so much to eat
in the lower acreage, you'd think they would stay down there.

Hoof boots

2015-01-20 Thread me.kint
This message is from: "me.kint"

Sue, my brief exposure to hoof boots is a lot depends on the anatomy of your
horse, & then how young & how much energy & time you have, Ha. I started out
with the old Macs G. They stayed on & lasted a long time, but buckling them was
kind of a pain. I tried Renegades. They fit Zoe fine but not Tunix. Renegades
are fine if your horse has a lower heel. Tunix has a little higher heel & they
didn't work for him. I tried Easy Boot Trail for Tunix, but he walked out of
them...poor fit. He has substantial pasterns & the Easy Boots are better suited
to a finer boned horse, I guess. I'm currently using the Cavallo Simple Boot.
They are a good fit for a larger boned horse with a little higher heel. Maybe a
little clunky but they stay on. I looked into the Easy boot gloves but decided
against it. I'm not young anymore & didn't want to have to be rasping a hoof
every time I put a boot on. (This is where age & energy comes in & how you want
to spend your time with your horse). I do l!
ike hoof boots for trail riding on my barefoot fjords. Tunix especially,
walks out so much better. He doesn't like to hurt himself on rough footing.
Hope this is helpful.

Drinking water.my 2 guzzle the water down. I have to limit their salt
because if they don't think they get enough hay to eat @ night when they are in
their stalls, they chow down on the salt block! One solution I'm finding is
have a Redmond Rock in each stall away from where they socialize. If I put the
block for mutual sharing, they both stand & lick, chomp or what ever. They can
go through a 50 lb salt block in a 1.5 months!

I just love these horses. Went riding with a new fjord friend from Holland.
Her Fjord isn't used to all of our ditches, etc. yet. Our rains have washed out
a dirt road & there is a deep gully down the middle of the road, no longer
traveled by cars. Well the latest rain caused a bigger drop off down into the
gully. I pointed Tunix down into it (he is careful & doesn't do stupid). He put
his head down to check everything out, stepped down on to a little dirt ledge
then put his hind feet down on the same ledge before dropping down carefully
about 2 feet on to the gully floor, whew. It was as smooth as can be. The
other fjord wouldn't follow so we had to surge back up.😊

I just want to emphasize the extra hay. In cold, it's OK to feed more hay to
fjords. Their digesting the hay generates heat & helps keep them warm, they do
burn (use up) more calories in cold weather. Even in So Calif we get down
into the 20s at night & have very cold winds day & night in our Pass area of So

Weight loss

These Fjords are amazing at how "little" they need. They are like me, Ha!
I've been watching Clinton Anderson's series down in the outback in the middle
of Austrailia. He had an expert telling about the brombies... How these horses
have adapted & go 3-4 days between drinks of water. They've even tracked, one
horse that went 2 weeks between drinks of water!
My 2, I don't know how I can feed them any less, I would feel so guilty.if
Tunix feels he hasn't gotten enough to eat, he will come down & stand on the
back porch & stare me down! He lets his needs be known. I haven't ever been
able to get a rib shown on mine. I keep them in at night & when I clean their
pens, I do a pile count each morning. I've predetermined a target number of
piles for each Fjord. If too many over the target, they gain weight, too
few-- they aren't getting sufficient food. I put in for the night & turn out in
AM at about the same time everyday. So the time they are in is pretty
consistent. That's how I determine if they are getting too much to eat.

I hope everyone still keeps with the list. I personally don't do Facebook, etc.
email is far as I go with technology. I guess I'm tech challenged. Also with
all the ID theft going on, I keep away from Facebook etc. We have had some
incidents of stolen electronic info & because we keep a low internet profile,
we were able to easily identify & take action, & resolve before it got really
terrible.

Everyone mentions our Fjords, limitations of conformation, etc. in progressing
up the levels of dressage, but another important factor in the mix not
mentioned is the rider. How many of us are capable of advancing up the levels?
Not only does it take the know how, it takes an athlete, incredible drive,
determination, time & of course a "little" extra money.

We are down sizing & want to sell our Running brook cart we did showing in & is
too big for our little Zoe (13.2 h). I do most of the driving & training &
prefer the easy entry training cart. We have photos if any one is interested.
Jim used it for 2 seasons at a local show then we stopped showing due to
circumstances beyond our control. I also have a new, never used 19" Smuckers
black buggy collar along with the 18" stainless hames with the accompanying
synthetic fittings ready to use & attach to the traces. This collar & hames
were for my Fjord that died (he had a smaller neck). They are too small for my
2. I'm asking $100 for the collar & hames plus shipping, which would have to
be computed. Below is a full descriptions of the cart. You can also go or the
Runningbrook web site to see what it looks like. Locally we would deliver for
mileage. Out of the area, buyer would have to make arrangements & pay for
transport.

Ursula, I'm not in to sales, but this sounds mighty suspicious. I once got a
suspicious email ending address "ua". I didn't click on it & immediately tried
to delete it from my iPad. I couldn't delete it I finally went to my
computer & was able to delete this email. It was a lethal email targeted to
iPads & impossible to delete with an iPad. I venture to guess that your email
is much worse than a spam!

"and for CHEAP"
I'm not into sells but.
My question is, if someone wants something for nearly nothing, would they be
providing a good home for their horses having that kind of attitude?
