First bitting a youngster

2009-10-22 Thread revivant
This message is from: reviv...@thegrid.net

Hi all,

I am wondering how folks go about bitting their youngsters for the first time.
How and at what age do you do it? Not to actually bridle and use in training.
I'm talking about just letting them wear the bit and get used to it.

Thanks!

Karen in Morongo Valley, CA

Parades? How about a performance demonstration at Equine Affaire?

2009-10-05 Thread revivant
This message is from: reviv...@thegrid.net

Hi everyone,

All this talk about doing a parade... Is anybody interested in doing a Fjord
Breed demonstration at the Pomona, CA Equine Affaire next February?
Vestlandshest is in the early stages of planning to have a booth in the Breed
Pavilion and hopefully also a demo. Kathy Kramer is organizing the performance
demo. Coincidentaly I was speaking with Kathy this morning and she is looking
for driving, english and western turnouts.

Equine Affaire is pretty good about supporting people who bring horses for the
demos. If you bring your horse exclusively to do a demo, you get a stall for 24
hours and 2 free tickets to the event for the day of the demo.

The fairgrounds in Pomona is a really nice facility. If you are interested,
contact Kathy at (951) 657-2566 or ka...@westcoastfjords.com.

mare udder repelant for weaned babies

2009-03-30 Thread revivant
This message is from: reviv...@thegrid.net

Hi everybody,

I'm wondering if anyone has used any type of topical product to keep a baby
from nursing after they have been weaned. I weaned my youngster six months ago
and thought I would try putting her back with mom. At first mom was very firm,
giving warning kicks and squealing, so I thought it would work out. But after a
couple of days, the little one's persistance and charm won over mom and she let
her nurse. With summer coming on, it would save us from having to build another
shade structure if we could put them together. Has anyone had any luck
resolving this situation?

Thanks much!

Fallbrook, CA Evaluation in July

2009-02-21 Thread revivant
This message is from: reviv...@thegrid.net

Hi everyone,

Vestlandshest has been given the go ahead by the NFHR to proceed with plans for
an evaluation in Fallbrook, CA (north San Diego County.) The two days of the
evaluation are tentatively scheduled for July 23, 24, 25 or 26. Conformation
and performance tests will be done.

Additionally, Vestlandshest will hold a pre-evaluation practice clinic on
Saturday, May 2, 2009 in Aguanga, CA.

Contact Evaluation Coordinator, Jayne Woellhof-Olson at 760 731-3268,
mbffjo...@gmail.com or 1020 N. Stage Coach Lane, Fallbrook, CA 92028 to
reserve space for your horses, to volunteer or for more information.

We still haven't met the minimum number of horses needed to proceed. The
opportunity to evaluate horses in southern California is only available every
few years due to a lower Fjord population than in some parts of the country. So
if you are interested in having your horses evaluated, please contact Jayne as
soon as possible.

Thanks!

- Or anything else you would like to talk about!

Of course, any other articles, photos, announcements, etc are appreciated. And
don’t forget that horsey related classified ads are free to members. If you
would like to submit something, the deadline is January 10. Either email me at
reviv...@thegrid.net or mail me at P. O. Box 1108, Morongo Valley, California

Re: Ration Balancer?

2008-11-13 Thread revivant
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Kristie,

A product I have been using for a couple of years now is from Sweet Pro and
comes in 2 forms - Equilix (solid in a tub) and Equipride (granual form) I like
the Equilix tub form and each horse has a tub to eat free choice. This is a
broad spectrum suppliment which includes salt. I actually provide free choice
salt separately since we live in a hot climate and the Equilix is too expensive
if they eat that just because they want salt! The SweetPro website is
www.equipride.biz. I have a 25 year old Fjord who's coat was always a bit
rough, even in the summer. The first summer I used Equilix she slicked out
beautifully! I had never seen her look so good.

I have a couple of questions about grass hay also. Recently we have been able
to get Teff grass hay in our area (southern California.) I have always fed
Bermuda, but the Teff is quite a bit more nutritious, but still a low protein
hay. A neighbor mentioned to me that the Teff hay can cause dental problems as
it can get caught in their teeth. Has anyone had any problems with this? This
same lady also says Bermuda hay shouldn't be fed to older horses as it tends to
cause colic. I haven't asked my vet about either of these issues yet, but I'm
wondering if anyone has seen this colic accurance with older horses and
Bermuda.

Thanks!
Karen

I'm satisfied with her weight, don't want her to get any bigger, but
I
think her coat and overall apperance could be better.

Hi folks,

I have recently become the newsletter editor for the California Fjord Club,

Re: Prevention of sand colic?

2008-04-26 Thread revivant

Hi Robin,

I have lived in the California desert with my Fjords for many years in a VERY
sandy environment. I feed psyllium religiously to prevent sand colic. I have
tried various kinds of psyllium products over the years, but have settled on a
powdered kind because it does the job and is much cheaper. I feed it for one
week every month with their pellets. It is supposed to be fed dry. For one of
my horses I add a very small amount of water and feed it immediately because
otherwise she doesn't eat it all. Also, ask your vet how to use a stethoscope
to listen for sand in the gut. Good luck!

This message is from: Robin Churchill [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Do any of you who live in dry places have specific
regimens that you follow or that your vet has advised
for prevention of sand colic? In southwest Fl, winter
is our dry season but we have had two summers with
much less rainfall than usual and my pastures are now
like the beach. I feed lots of hay frequently to keep
the horses from foraging in the dirt/sand and try to
feed out of bins which they promptly empty onto the
ground and also feed psyllium one week a month. I
haven't had any problems but I am concerned. Has
anyone used this Assure System that they are
advertising? How about mineral oil? I am going to
ask my vet as well. Apparently there is a paper by
someone at University of Florida that showed that the
most important preventative is feeding adequate hay
but I have not seen it.

So. CA fires - need a place to evacuate horses?

2007-10-23 Thread revivant
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all,

Having been through fire evacuations the last two years at our place, I know
how nerve-wracking and exhausting it can be. Last year the Sawtooth fire came
to within a few feet of our house. Thanks to about 200 firefighters who used
our place as a base no buildings were lost. Yeah, those firefighters are
amazing!

All that to say, if anybody needs a place to bring horses (or yourselves) our
place is available. We are about 45 minutes north of Palm Springs. So far no
fires are close by us (there's hardly anything left to burn actually!) Give us
a call at 760 363-6903 if we can help out. Hope those darn winds die down.

wrong with my carts (bicycle tires on the training cart.)

Thanks again from,

I have lots
of training experience with dogs, and do not accept being walked on
by ANY animal I own. I can see how with a really wimpy owner, who spoils their
fjord
and does not set limits, that a fjourd could use their strength and willpower to
be the boss. But if you are fearful, and inclined to spoil your pets,
you really should NOT own an animal that weighs 1000# anyway!!! And you probably
should not own most do!
 gs either, for that matter.

I thought this a very interesting comment. I love to watch The Dog Whisperer
on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar teaches people to be calm assertive
so as to teach dogs to be calm submissive. I have found by following his
methods of being a better assertive leader it has helped me alot with my
fjords.
