Hi - does anyone out there have contact with Karen Wolfe -
I purchased a Fjord from her years ago and wanted to get in
touch with her. She was living in Vermont at the time - maybe
still is!
Thanks!

Sizing a Cart

2008-04-20 Thread sonsweptfarm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All - I recently found a used Running Brook Spinner.
Its close enough that I can bring the horse to the cart and try it on him.

What should we be looking for in fitting him? Anyone know where there might
be diagrams?

Thanks!

Tick Control

2008-04-13 Thread sonsweptfarm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Has anyone used EquiSpot for tick control?
We have had so many cases of Lyme disease around here -
(Southern New Hampshire) and this year is supposed to be the worst.

A friend mentioned EquiSpot - like the Frontline one puts on dogs
for tick control with her horses.

Anyone try it?

Thanks - Nancy in NH

Cart Advise

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All - we are looking for advise on purchasing a 2 wheel cart for our young
Fjord.

Something fancy enough for all 3 phases of low level CDE's, but also good for
trail driving.

We have Running Brook Farm and Greenalls pretty close to us - anyone familiar
with
their carts?

Thanks!

EPSM Diet

2007-12-15 Thread sonsweptfarm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi - does anyone on the list has a confirmed EPSM horse?
I am curious as to what other people are feeding their horses
with EPSM.

Sonnie (18 year old Fjord Gelding) was confirmed about 6-7 years
ago with a muscle biopsy sent to Dr. Valentine.

He is on the oil and alfalfa pellet diet along with supplements.
Does anyone else feed their horses alfalfa pellets?

Thanks - Nancy in NH

Electric Pill Crusher and Tahiatian Noni

Hi - I need to crush 45 Doxy pills 2x/day.
Is there such a thing as an automatic pill crusher or small blender?

Also, has anyone ever used Tahiatian Noni Juice? The vet recommended
it for my guy as a natural anti-inflammatory drug. Expensive stuff!

Has anyone ever dealt with Rons Horse Harness?

http://easyentrycart.tripod.com/ronshorsetackcopy/har.html

I have friends looking for a draft size harness and they mentioned the
Presidential Harness from Rons. Looks like it sells for $309.00.
Price seems almost to inexpensive

Also does anyone has a draft size pleasure harness and/or a draft size cart for
sale? They are in the Newbury, Mass. area.

Thanks!

OT - Medical Question

2007-10-20 Thread sonsweptfarm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sonnie - our 18 year old Fjord gelding started bleeding after urination about
6 weeks ago. We had him scoped and had a biopsy done twice - the most
recent results came back as Hyperplasia - its located about 75-80cm proximal
to the urethral opening. The bladder appears to be normal.

We put him on Piroxicam for 30 days. He has been on the Piroxicam for 10
days and is still bleeding after urination. The biopsy results came back
as Hyperplasia.

He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable at all - still eats well etc...

Has anyone else had this type of problem? Anyone use the drug Piroxicam
before?

Also, what do people use to boost their horses immune system?

Thanks - Nancy in Nottingham, NH

Thanks for all the responses -

So if you don't use Quest, is there a dewormer that you use instead?

Glad I posted this - I was more concerned about our Shetland/Mini cross
and Quest, but it sounds like there have been problems with Quest and
quite a few breeds.

Thanks!

EPSM diet and BOSS

2007-01-14 Thread sonsweptfarm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Kelly MacDonald wrote:

For the EPSM horse who needs the truly high fat diet, some of them do
much better on more natural sources of fat, even when those sources
(boss, rice bran), bring the total dietary fat below the 20%+ fat that
the more severe EPSM'ers have been deemed to need. Corn oil is more fat
- - it's 100% fat vs 35 to 40% for BOSS and rice bran and it weights more
per volume measure (i.e. cup), so it delivers more calories per volume.
However, it's not just calories we're interested in when we're adding
fat, although that's a big reason. The nutritional value of BOSS is so
much better than oil.

I have 1 Fjord that has EPSM and have tried to keep up with any new info on
EPSM and diets. I had never heard that BOSS would help an EPSM horse/pony.
I emailed Dr. Beth Valentine who has been working with EPSM horses for years,
including helping us with Sonnie.
Thought that someone out there that is dealing with an EPSM horse would be
interested in her reply:

The black oil sunflower seeds contain up to about 40% fat, so they are good for
horses that won't take in enough fat from oils. I wouldn't recommend them for a
horse that eats other fat sources well, though, just be cause we aren't
entirely sure how effectively sunflower seeds are digested by horses (at least,
I haven't seen a study of it yet). There's nothing else in the sunflower that I
know of that is good for EPSM.

I think I'd stick with your current diet!

Thanks Kelly for bringing this up - interesting! My Fjord does ok on alfalfa
pellets, beet pulp
and corn oil plus supplements. This is the diet that Dr. Valentine told us
about years ago!
