As a society we have gotten a bit too thin skinned and rather lacking in
humor.  As an owner of 5 Fjords, I am aware of the chubb issues we have
to deal with..Oh, do I ever.

Personally, I find the Fjordcow rather funny and would think it a shame
if the owner of the Safergrass site were to be bullied into removing it.
But then, I am one of those who wears a sweatshirt with Ride a Fjord, it
will make your butt look smaller.

sometimes. Seems like we are in the attack mode. If we were in our

A lady is trotting down the road in her horse and buggy when
she
  is
pulled over by a cop. Ma'am, I'm not going to ticket you, but I do
have
  to
issue you a warning. You have a broken reflector on your buggy.

Oh, I'll let my husband, Jacob, know as soon as I get home.

That's fine. Another thing, ma'am. I don't like the way that one
rein
loops across the horse's back and around one of his testicles. I
consider
that animal abuse. That's cruelty to animals. Have your husband take
care
   of that right away!

Later that day, the lady is at home telling her husband about her
  encounter
with the cop. Well, dear, what exactly did he say?

He said the reflector is broken.

I can fix that in two minutes. What else?

I'm not sure, Jacob. Something about the emergency brake.

Well, here's my two-cents. I totally agree that no crossbreeding should
ever be allowed into the Fjord breed! This breed roots back into the ancient
Northern dun stock that put so much tough in other European and British
breeds. Yes, there was some development way-back-when, etc., etc.

I also agree with the rule that no outcrosses be made, and while I don't
know the reason exactly, if its the same as with the Friesian breed, where
they don't want any bad reputation coming back to the Fjord due to
funky-looking half babies - on the other hand the blood of the Fjord
could be used to improve some other breeds, and if carefully done, would
have no ill effects on the Fjord as a breed. There is good genetic material
in the Fjord that has been bred out of many other breeds, and a good dose of
the more ancient blood would be good.

How's that for a neutral comment?
Ha.

True. But are we not allowed to voice our opinions also? Especially when
something as inflammatory as pedophilia is brought up as a comparison to
cross breeding horses? What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If
somebody throws opinions like that out and about and around, we have a right
to say what we think about that also. I have no problem with Carol saying
what she thinks, as long as she has no problem with me voicing my opinion and
responding g. I actually think the conversation has been quite civil. I'm
surprised you've found fault with the response. And I think we mostly all
agree that crossbreeding would not be good for the fjord breed, and I
understand that Carol is sick of the subject. But I know the subject will
come upagain...and again...and again.

I think I agree on the too many podiums and too much ranting. I
originally joined the list to get to know more about Fjords, bloodlines,
general horsey stuff and just 'sit around talking to other horse
people'. The pleasure is dribbling away and I find myself deleting more

David I disagree with the talk to much especially as I am a great talker.
Ranting does bother me though, usually terribly subjective. Podiums and
ads I think are all right as I may be looking for what they are selling.

I'm very happy to see that the majority of responses to this latest
controversy, have been of the same nature as yours. We need to all
remember that there are over 230 other people on the list so there
are probably over 230 other opinions. The virtual kitchen table is
getting pretty big, so please folks let's keep things calm.

Having said this, let me put in my two cents on the original topic
of this discussion. Why is it that Fjord people the world over are
*not* able to point to any pictures that represent an ideal norm for
a Fjord stallion and mare. If you check out the literature of the
Quarter Horse association, or the Morgan association or any of the
other breed associations, you will find pictures of the ideal
stallion and mare. Why is it so difficult for Fjord folk to commit
to a picture that shows a good *norm* for conformation. To suggest
that we study all the approved stallions in Europe to see the ideal
is disingenuous. A picture is worth a thousand words, a thousand
pictures are confusing. Perhaps the NFHR should commission a
talented equine artist to study all the approved stallions and elite
mares in Europe to create a composite ideal for each sex. I think
many people would welcome these pictures as a starting point to
evaluate the horses they might want to purchase or breed.
