This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] My Anjee was born in mid-May in Alabama and I had to shave her even though it wasn't an extremely hot summer here. The first week was just wet, a completely different worry than the summer heat. When the sun came out I started shaving her coat off in bits and pieces over a few weeks until all but her legs were shaved. And I would have shaved her legs if my clipper blades lasted long enough. I started with the undersides of the neck and her chest and belly where I shaved her right to the skin. It was difficult catching her before she got damp and sweaty in the mornings. Then she got a trace clip. Then I shaved her head and neck and left a blanket clip leaving the blanket short but not shaven. Then I carved her blanket into a saddle. Then I shaved the saddle - I was finished. I have a guard on my clippers that allowed me to shorten the blanket on her back without shaving to the skin. I was reluctant to shave too much off too soon for fear she would get chilly because we had a lot of rain this summer. You have to worry a lot about both hot and cold the first couple of weeks. I couldn't leave the stall door open to the paddock at night until I was sure she was independent enough to leave her mother's side to warm up in the straw on her own. Now she is four months and her baby fur is all grown back and if my clippers still had any gumption left in them I would shave her all over again. I can't wait till autumn when Anjee can run and play to her hearts content without having to stop and play in the pond to cool off. Depending on your setup and the weather, you might want to get your baby shaved quicker than I did if you haven't already. It was my first experience raising a Fjordie foal and the learning curve was sharp. I fretted and poured over books and the web many times trying to figure out the best thing to do with several problems that cropped up. I hope and pray little Theo will be fine. New Baby Advice
This message is from: Nancy Blauers [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Everyone, I think my last post got lost in cyberspace. Had a little surprise this labor day weekend, I woke Sunday morning, crawled out to feed and Sam ,my Qh gelding, started up with his alarm grunt( usually reserved for escaped emus and rocks). He was facing the barn where Mischa stood quietly waiting for breakfast. Well I was a little bleary eyed(a bit too much wine the night before) and I was shocked to see a curous little face peer around from behind Mischa. And the dang vet said we still had three weeks before she was due! Anyway we now have a beautiful little colt and a special thanks to Dianna and her wonderful stallion Danser of Fawn Creek Fjords. This little guy, we named him Theodin is super sweet already loping around the pasture and eating well. This is where I need your help- today as the Florida temps soared to the mid ninties, our Theo had a very rough afternoon with heat exhaustion. He became very lethargic, his gums darkened to a dark pinkish red but he still attempted to eat and walk. We think our thermometer is off- it read 104. We immediately hosed off his legs with cool water, gave him a wash with rubbing alcohol on his chest and abdomen and a friend gave him 1CC shot of Bantamine. Our vet was hours away on another call so we were on our own with family and neighbors. We also gave him electrolites water orally, and put a huge industrial fan in the barn facing his stall. One of our neighbors dashed home to get an article he just found that described the exact same situation with another fjord foal in Florida. We followed what the article stated ,it even suggested shaving off the baby hair and he is a very wooly little guy. During this time the baby seemed to be getting better- still exhausted- but alert and eating more ( and he tried to kick a few times at our friend Rick). His body temp seems to be going down- his gums are looking better and he's getting up to pee , which looks good , it's clear and not dark yellow and his skin snaps right back when you check for dehydration and he is eating quite a bit. Has anyone else ever experienced this with babies born in warm weather climates? Can anyone offer any advice? This has been a very rough night and I'd really appreciate any advice from you seasoned Fjord breeders. What is the normal range body temp for fjord foals? What should his heart rate and respiration be?I'm still worried sick over this. Thanks! Nancy Blauers Geneva, Florida

This message is from: Janne Myrdal [EMAIL PROTECTED] Announcing the arrival of our one and only baby this year, and it was a filly, born on Thursday. As usual, Ingrid foaled with absolutely no warning out in the meadow,(never waxes, never gets loose) and as usual in the middle of the afternoon. This must be the year of tall fjord babies, as this one is HUGE, she is so tall and looks a month old to me, :). No name yet, still pondering as the name I had just does not fit her. She is out of Ingrid by FSF Tor, by Rokidas Knut. Name will probably be related to the wind and cold weather we have had in May, the day she was born the wind gusted 40+ miles an hour, uffda!!! Janne in warmer ND today, will get to the 60's, whooppiee!

Rokida's Karina and Kaspar are the proud parents. I'm off to take a shower and get on with the day. Philis Anderson Hi, Congratulations Philis. I missed seeing you at the expo. I spent a good deal of Sat. with Betsy and Mike and learned a whole lot on mane trimming from Mike as he did Flicka. I enjoyed the expo much more this year and hope to see you at a show or the expo next year. We are finally getting some rain in Spooner and hope things are not as dry by you now. -- Built FJORD tough Carol M. On Golden Pond

This message is from: Ursula Jensen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Kathy.Congratulations on your new filly. I'm looking forward to seeing a picture of her...will you post it to the List? Let us know the name you pick out for her...I assure you daddy Penfrydd's Raynor had a 'whooop-up' kind of day when he heard the news. He took me on a most exciting outing yesterday. We had not been on the road since last fall and there were all kinds of 'changes' that needed to be dealt with. That new survey flag someone had put up and that boulder which he was sure wasn't there last year and COULD roll out and hit us:.Most of all the idea of leaving home was just too much to bear so the drive OUT was very slow and not exactly in a straight line( read serpentine) and the trip home was 'VERY FAST...My arms ache today and P's Raynor is very tired..What a guy...a stallion in spring is always exciting no matter how old they get. A word of caution for the novice drivers on this List: be sure to take someone along on your first outing no matter who you drive. Horses tend to be a little 'hyped' on their first outing in the spring. Concerning milk testing to predict readiness for foaling, I don't know how much milk the calcium test requires, but if it is more than a few drops you may want to switch to a different testing method. It is just a minute amount. And I didn't even check her till last nite. She was grunting and groaning, and normally she's so ladylike. I KNEW something would happen. Baby is up and nursing like there's no tomorrow. What a beautiful sight! Pamela

I don't think I'll test the other mares. I wonder if it's not a good idea to be expressing milk from a pregnant mare anyway. Dianna Dianna, Congratulations on your new foal. Such an easy birth! How nice for all. Concerning milk testing to predict readiness for foaling, I don't know how much milk the calcium test requires, but if it is more than a few drops you may want to switch to a different testing method. For many years I used a Mare Foaling Predictor Kit made and distributed by Animal Healthcare Products of Vernon, California. It only requires a few drops of milk (about half a cc. - maybe 5 or 6 drops). I found it to be highly accurate for my Fjords. The kit was available from my vet and also was sold by Omaha Vaccine Company in their catalog. I believe they called it a Predict a Foal kit. The kit contains everything you need to do the tests plus detailed instructions. Happy Spring. Mary === Mary Thurman Raintree Farms [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Do You Yahoo!?
