Steve, thank you for doing this list for all these years. I learned a
lot reading, although I did not write a lot. I appreciate meeting other
Fjord owners through the list.

As with some others, I find Facebook and social media too much of a time
waste to sort through. My first Fjord, BDF Lillehammer is 21 and still
going strong, my main fox hunting partner, BTB Silija is 27 and retired,
and Leik's Susie Q is 5 and has some very big shoes, or I should say,
hoof boots, to fill, but is learning well.

Best wishes,

Sue Banks, near Williamsburg, VA

RE: Goodbye FjordHorse List

2015-12-24 Thread Mary Ofjord
This message is from: "Mary Ofjord"

I was mildly shocked when my husband told me Steve is going to shut down the
Fjord Horse List! I wondered why he received the notice and I did not. Upon
searching my Outlook Email, I found all the replies in my Junk Mail!
Outlook gets a little too aggressive, I've found out, on which of my emails
gets chucked in the Junk mail and which ones it lets through. That being
said, I was able to move all the responses into the In Box.

I understand Steve's reasons for shutting down the list, but it comes with a
bit of sadness because I remember when we first got Fjord horses back in
1994, and soon after, were notified about the "List." We learned a lot from
the conversations and wisdom gleaned from the List. I remember how it was
referred to as sitting around the kitchen table having coffee and discussing
the wonderful breed we call the Fjord Horse. I was able to have
conversations with, what I considered famous people - such as Gayle Ware,
when I had a problem with one of my horses. Of course, there were the times
when Steve had to step in and calm things down when things got a bit too
heated for civil discussion - just maybe, someone was going to throw one of
those coffee cups across the table at somebody! I remember printing out
all the responses and emails when I first was on the list - I think I quit
after I had several three-ring binders full of emails. I didn't want to
miss anything that came from those emails. Checking the Fjord Horse List
was one of the first things we did when we got home. Later, of course, I
found out about the Archives and I didn't need those three-ring binders
anymore.

I remember those wonderful Archives which held an immense amount of
information to review anytime we wanted. One of the many things that the
Face Book pages seem not to be able to do. I, too, do not care for some of
the frivolity that comes with Face Book - how many times do I get to see
"Buttercup" doing this or that; how many times on FB to I get to see someone
asking again and again how to saddle fit the Fjords? The Archives had all
that information.

We also learned the etiquette - at least some of us - how to cut and paste a
response to an email. We learned that our beloved Fjords were loved
world-wide by the responses from members overseas. Yes, FB has that too,
but it seems too impersonal to me. Heck, I don't even have a smart phone!
How's that for being in the last century? I have no service here at our
farm, but I can go up the hill 1/4 of a mile and get five bars! I also
consider FB to be a great waste of MY time and both my husband and myself
have wasted a couple hour here and there pouring through the posts from FB.

I'm as guilty as anyone because I also admit that I haven't posted in the
Fjord Horse List for some time - I think I know why because all the emails
were going into my Junk Mail, however, it's still sad to see this come to an
end.

Steve, thank you for all your years of service to the breed, thank you for
being the tech magician to explain over and over again how to subscribe and
unsubscribe to the List, thank you for bringing us all together.
With fond memories,
Mary Ofjord

Steve: I want to thank you for all the years and effort you have put into
making such an engaging list available to Fjord fans everywhere.

I too have noticed a significant dropoff of contributions in the past year

contact and picture sharing with a few friends and family. It is
completely understandable to not want to maintain a service that is barely
used.

While I am horseless for now due to financial circumstances, I found your
list and Fred's forum, an invaluable resource for a newcomer to this
wonderful breed. I started on the list in 2002 and found a great bunch of
people who were willing to offer suggestions and advice no matter how
trivial the topic. Thank you again for all your time and commitment in
promoting our wonderful Fjordies over the years!

Don't forget about the NFHR Evaluations in Bozeman, MT on August 20, 2016.
I plan to fly in to visit my son and take care of personal business at the
same time. I hope I will get to meet some of the faces for the names on

Thanks for the offer, Fred. No, I am not burned out, but it appears
the

concept of an email discussion list is. The novelty or perhaps the
immediacy of Facebook seems to make the idea of communicating via email
just too old fashioned to interest people. The traffic has dwindled to

that fighting the tide of the new "social media" is insane, and though I

Steve,

Tusen takk for managing the list all these years. I joined in 1999 and learned
a lot, met great people, and formed lifelong friendships. I always enjoyed
reading the stories of adventures with the Fjord horse, and sharing my own. We
learned, celebrated, and grieved together as our most beautiful companions came
and went from our lives.

My Fjord boys who I loved so much are all gone now, and I find myself horseless
for the first time in many years. Although it makes me sad, I'll admit that I
am enjoying the break in commitment of time and money that the four-leggeds
require. I am focusing on my writing, teaching, and other areas of life for a
while.

I maintain the same email account, and I can be reached on Facebook at

All good things must come to an end. Some of us have been here since March
29, 1998 and a few have arrived only recently. However I have come to the
conclusion that the traffic on the list has dwindled to the point that it
no longer makes any sense for me to continue to fund it. So when the
current year's server subscription runs out, the FjordHorse List will be no
more.

Technology flows forward, and although I find the current offerings of
social media to be somewhat of a black hole for people's time, I am in the
minority like the Luddites of the 19th century. For that reason, I must say
goodbye to all of you who I have come to know online, because I will
continue to refuse to become enmeshed in either Facebook or Twitter.

It's been great getting to meet all you folks, but it's now time to draw
the curtain on The List.

Thank you for hosting the list; we were new to Fjords 9 years ago; and everyone
on the list has been very helpful. It it would help, we will be happy to make a

All good things must come to an end. Some of us have been here since March
29, 1998 and a few have arrived only recently. However I have come to the
conclusion that the traffic on the list has dwindled to the point that it
no longer makes any sense for me to continue to fund it. So when the
current year's server subscription runs out, the FjordHorse List will be
no

more.

Technology flows forward, and although I find the current offerings of
social media to be somewhat of a black hole for people's time, I am in the
minority like the Luddites of the 19th century. For that reason, I must
say

goodbye to all of you who I have come to know online, because I will
continue to refuse to become enmeshed in either Facebook or Twitter.

It's been great getting to meet all you folks, but it's now time to draw
the curtain on The List.

I belong to my local Grange, and, like all Granges, there is a "Lecturer"
position. The Lecturer position's duties include providing educational
content. I suppose we might be able to bring back some of the list
relevance by adopting a rotating responsibility amongst old timers to make
some kind of presentation each month on horse care, or how to buy a kids'
horse (hint, Fjords may not be it). An idea for Fred.

Fred has asked that I let folks know that his Yahoo list is continuing.
It does seem to me that the traffic there isn't much greater that it has
been around here. I don't knowSteve

I WAS THINKING of that alternative FJ option also. Fred allows sale of FJ
horses

on his list too, on Monday's, which may come in handy for some.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/fjordissues/info

Here's a tip that comes in handy-- if that link is not live, forward the
post to yourself after placing the cursor at the end of the dead link
and "enter"... when it arrives it will be active.

Fred has asked that I let folks know that his Yahoo list is continuing.
It does seem to me that the traffic there isn't much greater that it has
been around here. I don't know, but I guess there is an immediacy to
Facebook that email lists are missing, but after giving it a shot early on
I found it to not be my cup of tea.

No, I still have not found the ideal Corgi to attempt to replace Clust. If
anyone knows of an available young Corgi from active herding lines, please
send me contact information.

In the years I lost contact with them, what’s such a pity.

I have had wonderful feedback from novices as well as more experienced
horsewomen and even people who just enjoy animals or good stories. Check it
out on Amazon if you think it might help you. This list and Facebook Fjord

Welcome to the list! The archives are a treasure-trove of information, and
please do feel free to ask questions. I have had my Elph for 18 years now
(oh my!), mostly living in Minnesota, and having recently moved to San
Francisco (Elph is in Woodside on a free lease as a therapy horse). I only
get to see him on weekends, as traffic is so awful here that the idea of
driving the 30 miles or so is unbearable to even think about during the
week. I envy you being able to have your horse right there with you.

Where are you located?

I'm sure she will enjoy the goats!

Welcome to the Fjordhorse neighborhood! I know you and Tira will have
lots of fun together. She will provide all the experience you need although a
good riding coach is helpful too. And the rescue of elderly horses shows you
already have a good heart which can't be taught. Tira, her goat friends and

I am so glad that all of you did not have more serious injuries. It is
unfortunate that the horses will remember this incident for a long time
even if they seem fine. I sure do hope they will get over it. We humans

so much. Fjordies have so much good sense, they may stand their ground

This was not a horse related accident. If Brian had been driving a car, he
might now be dead! The truck was heading straight for an oncoming
vehicle. And was equivalent to a hit and run..

Brian, when you catch your breath, and, hopefully, the injured horse
improves, is it possible to go up the road to the logging show and figure
out what logging "show" the truck was serving, and then sue that company in
small claims court? They might rat out the driver as well.

Oh my gosh! SO glad you are alright! I seem to remember a couple of driving
incidents we witnessed at Armstrong the first time I showed there when I
stayed with you in your motor home. The 6 up that had a run away and the lady
who's mare spooked as she was exiting her cart with no header. Guess that's
why I stick to riding?!

list—I thought awhile aboutsending this mail to the list but asoverall road
safety is paramount I thinkit appropriate. Last Friday, Aug 7th I took
out a pair for a realnice long drive whichwe were al enjoying. We were coming
North on Trinity Roadabout ½ mile fromour place when we heard a logging truck
coming south justaround the cornerfor us. The road at that point is fairly
narrow with no ditchon our rightside only a steep 70% bank of dirt. The
logging truck at about 60mph. roundedthe corner facing us at about a ½ head
on collision. The drivernever slowedor pulled over just zoomed at us. The
Fjord pair reacted inflight mode and went up the 70% bank pulling uswith them
in the wagonette. Iwas driving and Dave my groom was in the back. The logging
truck was fullyloaded with a logging trailer hooked behind so itwas a huge
sight barrelingdown on us. At this point the Fjords were done withthe hill and
in slow motionit seemed they fell over backwards and sidewaysrolling back down
the hill withDave and I rolling down with the wagonetterolling as well. By
some form ofhigher intervention we were under butunscathed. The logging truck
pulled overabout 300 yards from us, but when hesaw us get up he left the scene
of theaccident! We were left with two Fjords lying one on top of the
othertangled inharness and equipment. The Fjord underneath was
cryingloudly.Thank goodness for quick release traces. The near Fjords
headstalland collarhad been torn off her and she has right side facial and eye
damagefrom beingunder the off Fjord. Dave and I got them untangled and
standingshakily. Wewalked them home with torn harness and left the bent
wagonette onthe side ofthe road. When we got home they were still jumpy but
more settled.Ursula tookthem into the shade of the barn and cool washed them
down andtreated thefacial injuries on the one Fjord. Dave and I took the
tractor andwent backfor the damaged wagonette. It is now in the shop being
welded. Theharness wastorn as well I have notified the RCMP who have opened
the afile on the incident. Theirone main answer wasdid you get the
driverslicense plate number? I ratherdoubt that the RCMP will move on the
accident!!The pair are healing wellafter the accident. The near Fjord seems
quitesettled, while the off Fjordwas more injured and is still very cautious
aboutanything. I was somewhat shocky myself for a time but am driving again
andfeelingOK.The huge overall picture of this incident in hindsight, is
thatthanks to twoFjords who reacted quickly, they saved themselves and two
verythankful humanbeings. A very, very thankful---

was passing us

WOW Brian. Am SO glad that everyone is OK and hope that the horses recover
fully as well as your nerves! That seems to be the problem with today's society
that they drive too fast for the road conditions and are not willing to get
involved. The truck driver SHOULD have stayed to make sure you were all OK but
then he might have known that he was the cause and left to avoid owning up to
his part. Stay safe, my friend.and Drive On.

Hello All, I saw the question about Snowy's Mezlo and his entry into the
extreme cowboy race back in February. Mezlo showed Friday and did very well
in most of the obstacles. Unfortunately he didn't do the water box which
was white this time. Of course, we hadn't practiced with a white one that
had a piece of black in the bottom surrounded by scary obstacles. He wasn't
scared but figured why go through it if one could go around it. LOL
Otherwise he did all the obstacles and placed into the semi-final round on
Saturday. On Saturday he did every obstacle but the water box again. This
race was different since most of the horses there had done the challenge
multiple times and this was Mezlo's 2nd time in a competition and to be
around so many horses. He was very excited to see there are so many other
horses in the world! He did the bridge which had cones on it to weave
through and a cowboy curtain with pool noodles, the canter poles in a very
small circle (very challenging for him to not hit one), a tire that you had
to pick up the rope and pull around the jump standard (misjudgment on the
rider to make it around the pole), push a ball, jump 2 jumps, up on a
tractor tire filled with dirt and black plastic on the down side, sidepass 2
barrels with a cow hide over them, stand in a hoola hoop while rider
dismounted and walked around the horse, go through a hallway with scary
objects, and pick up a rain slicker and run around the arena. Mezlo wasn't
as focused on the obstacles as our last time but he did very well even with
the crowd hanging on the rail in the arena with their arms sticking in. I
think the only obstacle he didn't do was the water box and the hallway
because of rider forgetting the obstacle. Mezlo placed out of the final
round on Sunday by a few points. He had quite a few people come out to see
him and it was nice to meet other fjord owners.

Just shows us what we need to practice on! We are enjoying Mezlo and our
other fjord on trails this summer and hoping to get some camping in with
them.

Happy trails, Carol Hendricks

i should mention that this is a video that i did before we had digital cameras,
and isn’t professionally edited, however, i think it’s pretty good.

as i watch it again, some of the parade highlights include Bob Gudknecht
driving the 6-up team pulling the stagecoach, various carts and drivers, Phil
Oden did the introduction of the parade and the history of the horse. the
Norwegian wedding procession and costuming.
Presentation of the flags and anthems for Norway and USA.
Neil Sorum giving the history of the show, from 6 horses the first year to 130
in 2005.
Recognition of the original starters of the show…
Demonstrations of Fjord versatility in driving, riding, jumping, log
pulling…..it was the year of the rarely seen Zebra dun Fjords, ridden by the

it runs about 45 minutes.

Just have to share what my almost 25 yr. old Liten Loki did at our county's
first annual Festival of the Horse. I took him to be in the Parade of
Breeds since he is so unique and we also took our half Belgian PMU rescue
who now 11 yrs. old. The crowd loved Loki...as always. I didn't enter him
in any classes since he's retired and not in condition to compete but I kept
eyeing the trail class which didn't seem to require any stamina...just a
willing attitude...& decided to enter him even though it had been years
since we'd practiced any obstacles. The other trail class entries were
throwing huge fits at some of the obstacles but I decided that Loki & I were
just going to have fun!

He absolutely enjoyed the class and all the attention he got...especially
enjoyed the bag of treats that accompanied his blue ribbon! We're looking
forward to next year's trail class!
Enjoy your Fjords! Sandra & Loki in VA

Good Morning

Well, the Fjords moved into Louisville last week and managed to impress
just about everyone at the Pegasus Parade on Thursday April 30th . Its a
big parade, there were about 115 units including about half a dozen Macys
Parade type balloons, and many floats.

Hello Everyone from Olivia Farm!
Spring has definitely sprung! Not only is the weather absolutely beautiful
in the inland northwest, but new additions are popping up left and right!
We had our first foal of the season, a healthy colt by Tico and out of Riena
by Myrstein. He was born on April 28th and is just a love. Two of our
goats kidded this past week with a set of twins and a set of triplets. And
now we are waiting up at nights for our next baby. OFI Greta is due to have
her Skogheims Viljar foal on the 10th of May. She is getting pretty close!
In addition to new foals and kids, we are extremely excited to announce a new
addition to the stallion line up! A huge THANK YOU to Jill Kosek for the
privilege to be the new owners of the fantastic Norwegian import stallion,
Flotren! We know that there will be many people in the north west, just
like us, eager to have Flotren back in the area. We will be standing him
this season (he will be here in mid-may).
For more info on Flotren, our babies, and a few other new additions (and all
our other boys who still have openings for breeding this season), please see
our web-site, www.oliviafarm.com. It was just updated yesterday.
Happy Spring!

Sounds wonderful (actually, I would rather see the parade than the derby). It
must have been quite a bit of work to organize this: thank you and
congratulations. And thanks for maintaining those driving skills, which are so
rare around here.

I hope there will be ways of seeing pictures (Facebook group?)

It's finally time!!

Tomorrow and Wednesday, April 28 and 28, several drivers ( and riders) with
their Norwegian Fjord Horses will converge on the Kentucky State
Fairgrounds. We have been invited to appear in the Pegasus Parade, THE
official parade for the Kentucky Derby.

There will be 4 ridden Fjords, and 7 driven Fjords with various vehicles:
Curt Pierce and Marsha Korose are bringing Ulend and Solvar with an Antique
Victoria carriage, Bob Long is bringing a Turnout vehicle and pair, Ardeth
Obenauf is bringing a single with a marathon vehicle, Jennifer Harber is
driving a single and I am taking Dagney and my Bird's Eye maple roadster.

We are honored and thrilled to both be representing the Driving community as
well as our beloved, delightful and unique Norwegian Fjords. It's a
wonderful opportunity to show off the different sorts of horse-drawn
vehicles still in use to the general public. We won't be running for the
roses, but we'll be wearing them!

Eagerly anticipating a wonderful time ( and no rain)

Lindy and Dagney in the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia ( but heading
west!)
