Karen - In Oregon, it is hard to get the officials to take action. Several
calls and several people were involved in calling in the situation with the
horses we finally took to our farm. We monitored the 3 we now have for 60
days prior to taking them. We are lucky the two older ones have survived the
starving situation they were in. The younger one is in better shape due to
age and still nursing off of both mares.

I heard you did well at the Expo - Great Job! Sorry I could only go to set
up. I had to come back and monitor our new hay burners... :-)

Karen

I personally wasn't offended, just heartbroken that picture was
just so sad. But I did put the note in there for others who may be
upset by it.

I wish i was set up to take in rescues but I am not

Re. keeping tabs on horses...yes, Reena, in my area I do this. I have reported
a very close neighbor to us, but to no avail. I suppose if I went to state
level or HSUS, maybe our redneck sherriff's dept. would take action. I am
actually looking into Oregon state livestock & ag laws...in a strange way the
cattle may have more protection than the horses due to laws on the books re.
management, and maybe if they show up to check on the cattle, they just might
look at the horses too and then get the sherriffs off of thier collective
butts. Even w/ 3 call-ins to date, face to face interviews & photos, this
local sherriffs dept. & AC is a joke. I remember Lisa P. saying something
similar about law enforcement of animal abuse cases in S. Utah, something to
the effect that they "just like to carry guns" (Lisa help me out here ;~)
Anyway, hope to see more discussion on establishing some kind of Fjord rescue.
I even have a chunk of money that needs to go to a horsey cause to help get it
going.
Ideas anyone?

Kmac in very blustery blucky weather. Glad i made it over the Cascades from
the NW Horse Expo b4 the snow really started falling last nite; it was bad
enuf in the sleet. Yikes!

How horrible this is.

You are right Karen, in this economic times, horses are even more so a
luxury and keeping tabs on horses surrounding one might be a good idea
in case you see someone having a hard time maintaining the upkeep of it.

I think that would be a good idea also for the rescue group.

Since we all know how hardy & what 'easy keepers' our Fjords are; it
makes me really sick to imagine what it would take to starve a Fjord
...truly shocking. In light of the above, what Catherine L. has
recently

experienced in rescuing 3 abused/starved Fjords in Oregon, and our
current depressed horse market/economy possibly contributing to more
cases, is it time to formally, (thru the NFHR), or informally,
(outside

of the NFHR), to organize a Fjord Rescue network amongst ourselves?

What think you Fjord owners?
