Fjord Herald - Submission deadline for summer issue approaching

2011-04-16 Thread Starfire Farm
This message is from: Starfire Farm starfiref...@usa.net

I know, it doesn't seem possible. But it is. As always, we encourage you
to share your experiences and expertise with entertaining and/or
informative articles. If you are reluctant to submit something because
you think it is to complicated or difficult -- reconsider. Beth and I
will try to make it a fun and rewarding experience. Holler with any
questions. You can reach us at edi...@nfhr.com or 303-651-3940.

Remember to send us full-sized, original image files -- if you aren't
sure what that means, just ask. I'll be glad to help you understand the
confusing world of digital images.

Fjord Herald submission deadline approaching

2011-01-28 Thread Starfire Farm
This message is from: Starfire Farm starfiref...@usa.net

Your winter Fjord Herald should be arriving in your mail box any day now
and it is almost time for us to start on the next issue.

The article and ad submission deadline is Feb 1. As always, we are happy
to answer any questions you have about submitting -- especially if
you're a first time author. If you have something to share that might be
of interest to other Fjord enthusiasts, don't put it off any longer.
And, start going through your Fjord photos too -- it might be time for
another What have you done, lately feature. When you send your photos,
be sure to include captioning information and tell us who took the photo
so we can give them proper credit.

Look forward to hearing from everyone!

Sandy (and Beth -- who is at the NFHR educational forum in TN right now
with BDF Obelisk, BDF Magnum and BDF John Arthur)

Fjord Herald Submission Deadline

2010-10-24 Thread Starfire Farm

This message is from: Starfire Farm starfiref...@usa.net

Quick reminder that the submission deadline for articles and Ads is
November 1st.

Think about sharing your summer and fall adventures with the rest of the
members you know how much you enjoy seeing photos and reading
stories about other member's experiences. Articles can be about anything
FJORD! From everyday interactions, trail rides, performances and show
results, tips on raising or training or just what your Fjord means to
you. And, we are always collecting images and short stories (usually
just a paragraph) for the What have you done lately? series. If you
need 'technical' help with your submission, don't be shy -- just ask.
Usually you can just email everything to us.

Remember -- the Fjord Herald is YOUR publication. Linda, Beth and I just
pull it all together and get it out there for everyone to read. Without
YOUR submissions, we have no Fjord Herald. And, along those same lines,
your advertising support goes a long way toward keeping the publication
viable. Consider renewing your Friend of the Fjord Herald today!

We look forward to hearing from you,
Sandy

Herald Submission Deadline Approacheth - Aug. 1st

2010-07-29 Thread Starfire Farm

This message is from: Starfire Farm starfiref...@usa.net

Hello All,

The submission deadline for the Fall issue of the Fjord Herald is upon
us once again. *August 1st! *If you have material that you would like to
submit, please get it to us ASAP.

*Attn: Stallion Owners: *The Fall issue is the one that arrives in
subscribers' mailboxes in October/November. If you wait until the Winter
issue to advertise, the Herald might not hit the mailboxes until
Feb/March, so if you want prospective mare owners to oogle your
stallions' photos ALL WINTER, the Fall issue is your best bet!

Of course, if you consider a 4x contract, they'll be looking at your
stallion all year!

Thanks,

Beth

Next Fjord Herald Submission Deadline - May 1st

2009-04-14 Thread Starfire Farm

This message is from: Starfire Farm starfiref...@usa.net

Just a gentle reminder that the submission deadline for articles and
advertising for the Summer Fjord Herald is quickly approaching. Don't
know what everyone has been doing the last couple of monthsbut the
editor's InBox has been pretty quiet!

If you've been putting off writing an article for us -- now is the time
to put pen to paper (...does anyone do that anymore?) or more likely,
start that new Microsoft Word document. As always, include a bunch of
photos for us to pick from to accompany your piece. It should be
obivious to everyone that the only way we can produce a Herald that you
enjoy readingis if YOU send us stories, club activity coverage and
updates, instructional articles etc. to put in it!

And, we're always here to answer questions, so don't be shy.

Look forward to being flooded with your submissions,

I think I figured out what happened to all of the Canadian Heralds

Sweden for a Winter vacation. I am sure it is nice in Sweden this
time of year and hopefully the bag of Heralds enjoyed their stay from
mid November until January there. I am not sure if they got to see
much of Sweden or just spent the time in the bag in the back of a

Spring Fjord Herald Submission DEADLINE is Feb 1

2008-01-14 Thread Starfire Farm

This message is from: Starfire Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just a quick reminder that we're quickly approaching another Fjord
Herald submission deadline.

Please don't wait until the last minute to send us your article/photos
etc. The submission deadline is the LAST date for submission - not the
ONLY date, nor necessarily the one you should shot for. As amazing as
this might sound, even though there are three months between issues, I'd
bet that over 80% of the submissions arrive within a couple days of that
deadline (often more AFTER the deadline than before!)

As always, we'd love to hear how you've spent the first half or your
winter and get photos of you and your Fjords participating in winter
activities. The Spring issue has traditionally been the issue where we
feature a calendar of events that will take place throughout the year.
If you know of an event that you want to share with the membership, send
us a description of the event, date, cost and contact information.

I heard from one of our Canadian members the other day who JUST got
their Fall issue on January 3rd. Hopefully everyone has that issue now!
If not send me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll follow up on it.
Seems like there has been a couple months between the first issue making
it into a member's hands and the last issue to arrive. If you're just
getting your Fall issue, you'd better read quickly because the Winter
issue is right on its tail. As a matter of fact, the Winter issue is at
the printer and should be mailed soon. Thanks to Mike May for getting
all the necessary paper work and fees taken care of, the Winter issue
will be mailed as a Periodical which should even out the mailing times
differences and everyone should get their copy in a reasonable time.

Holler if you have any questions! We also welcome your comments and ideas.

Just a quick note to let you all know that your Winter Herald should be
in your mail box soon. We got ours yesterday.

The Spring issue submission deadline is right around the corner - March
1st. If you plan to submit an article, you need to have everything to us
by then (and earlier would be nice). Now that there is hope that the
weather will start to get nicer, I imagine more events are in the
planning. If you have event information that you would like to share
using the Fjord Herald's Event Calendar, please get us all the pertinent
information by March 1st as well. We generally include events up to 6-8
months out from the submission deadline.

Long Lining and Submission at BDF

2001-06-07 Thread Cheryl Beillard
This message is from: Cheryl Beillard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks Carol for those tidbits of information .. sounds like a wonderful
week at BDF, with your liontamer who is sharing her valuable insights. One
of the messages from our experience with Olaf Nyby was the importance of
groundwork, and long lining in particular to both horse and whip. And
learning to read when the horse was truly accepting of the bit and engaged
through the hind quarters .. the description of being asked to stand at the
horse's neck and ask for that engagement before mounting was very
interesting and made sense to me. I often think that many of the problems
we experience come from insufficient time, even a few minutes, spent in
preparing the horse mentally, to work, before we hitch or mount .. thanks
for sharing, another first for BDF!

This message from Cynthia, home for the holidays, and having to
wrestle the computer from Steve for a few minutes - he's asleep so
 its my turn.

Nebraska State Fair - The horses, Steve and I are recovering from two hot and
exhausting, but triumphant days at the Carriage Driving Show during
our state fair. Tank and I got a second in pleasure driving ladies and a
fourth in reinsmanship. Steve and Pferd placed first in the fault and
out and second in pleasure driving men's. Steve got fourth and I got
fifth in the scurry (this after he calls my horse the SUV model and his
the sportscar model - we were pretty close behind him!).

Tank is the only Fjord to show at the Fair. The thing I noticed so much
this year is how people just have to smile when they see him trotting
around waiting to go in for a class. Yeah, you get the cute horse
remarks, etc. but the big smiles he gets are the best - people just
 can't help themselves.

Driving Humor - John I loved it! Alison, your addition for Fjord is
 terrific!

Evaluations - Although we also mention the Morgans a lot, we don't
mention our part Trakehner mare, Skipper so often. We have had her a
lot longer than Tank and became familiar with warmblood ways a
long time ago. One of the reasons we have never bred her is that she
just isn't up to snuff. We love her dearly and given the time she
really deserves she would be a great using animal, but she isn't
really breeding material though we were very tempted at one time.
Having seen what has been done to Quarter Horses (they deserve as
much criticism as the Morgans in my opinion), I have always agreed
with the strict breeding principals that are espoused by the
warmblood breeds and their adoption in a large way by breeders in this
country. (Who by the way, receive good stud fees for their proven
stallions and good prices for the approved mares and their progeny).
Warmblood associations in North America do determine who can
be licensed as breeding stallions and mares are rated and it is
 accepted.

I understand why people who are already breeders and have made a
serious investment in stock can be very reluctant to adopt a more
critical and outside system to tell them who is better to breed and
to breed to, but don't try to tell me it is because it is not the
American way. It's an excuse and not a very good one. If in North
America, we want to breed good horses, we need to hold ourselves to
a high standard and not be afraid to be self-critical. Demanding good
breeding stock and selling the not so good as using stock are just
good breeding as well as good marketing practices. If all people who
had stallions insisted on breeding to good mares, if all people who
want bred their mares carefully evaluated them before deciding to
breed them maybe the killer market wouldn't thrive so in this
country. In only four years of owning my Fjord Gelding, I have
noticed at Blue Earth, a great increase in non-breeder participants.
There is a market out there for good using horses not of top breeding
 quality.

I would also like to see performance standards and progeny produced
part of the determination of whether or not a horse should be used for
reproduction or receive increasingly higher approval ratings as the
animal matures - not just conformation, but ability to do are
 important.

If we adopt a really effective evaluation system now, we can ensure
that breeding to the stallion down the road because he is close and
cheap never becomes a practice as Fjords become more numerous.

I feel much the same as Martha, from New Hampshire -re: Fjord Show in
Vermont.
My first Fjord show was in Blue Earth - and I walked away with a
similiar
feeling. Homey, friendly competition, competitors and fans cheering on
anyone
and everyone. A nice departure from the QH shows. I do not plan to
show my
Fjord but would feel comfortable giving it a try at the Blue Earth
show -
lots of friendly help and support to go around there.

Julia,
I believe most of the 'discussion' on Stallion behavior has
stopped because most people do not want to offend anyone. I think this
has been the case from the first with Fjord organizations. Most, I
repeat MOST, of the people who own Fjords are like them in that they are
easy going and do not want to seem to start a ruckus. In many ways
that's good but in cases like this and other problems in the past
someone will get mad not say anything then form a new organization. We
do not need more organizations, we need to strengthen the NFHR. The only
way to do that is by discussion.
I for one have not said much on this topic. I know the horse,
but was not in Oregon. I have very strong feelings about the horse,
beautiful but 'ill mannered', I would not breed to him. That does not
mean he should not be used, it means I would not use him.
As far an The American Evaluation, I do not agree with all of
it, but I think we are going in the right direction, lets keep improving
and working on it. In my opinion there is no options, we need to
evaluate behavior on all horses. All of the Fjords that are 'ill
behaved' should be taken out of the breeding pool.
I've intentionally used the words 'ill behaved' because I do not
know how to define the behavior, that is one of the things that needs to
be discussed and developed by the American Evaluation Committee.

Fjords around here are called Horses not ponies.

I'm also working with 6 yr old gelding (Fjord, of course!) in dressage. =
Very resistant to bending/sofening jaw. We worked for quite awhile on =
forward but he now seems confused with leg pressure when I ask for =
bending (in either direction). What is working? Any ideas?

Subject:Dressage training for Fjords

This message is from: Cynthia_Madden/OAA/UNO/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tank and I are getting serious about our dressage training this spring
under saddle and in driving. My prior experience is with my Morgan and
after many years of off and on work (forget winter training!) we are
approaching second level. Tank is beginning to listen to leg pressure, =
but
is not very sensitive ( a little Fjord horse owner sense of humor here). =
I
am starting to ask him to soften his jaw more and bend a little (he =
doesn't
like this!) I have to get after him a little more that I have. My =
driving
instructor says he does have a good mouth.

Does anyone with experience in dressage and Fjords have any special =
advice
about their training that is different from working with other horses?
