This message is from: Bonnie MacCurdy Hi. I use Renegades on my two fjords for going out on trail rides or drives. I have found them to be easy on and off. I rasp the boys' feet every two or three weeks. They are five and six years old and have never worn shoes. They have lovely, hard, barefoot feet. I have always done them myself. I have a farrier check them when the shod horses are done and so far, so good. Doing this has saved me a ton of money over the years! This message is from: Hello list! Willi Fjord had a check up today. He is doing well. His shoe and plate came off for x rays, and everything is looking good. We have been upgraded from handwalking to turnout in 12'x12' corral panels. May not seem like much but for a boy who normally does NOT live in a stall, it's a big deal. Everything has to be flat and dry though, or he stays in the stall. I have also put panels up in front of his run in, so on good days he can go from the bed to the couch, so to speak. He did get away from me last Thursday and ran about a tenth of a mile. I thought my heart would never restart. But, no damage was done, thank goodness. Thanks again for all the good wishes! Kathy and Willi, in Upstate SC, where the heat got turned on today because the dog was shivering in his crate at 3am. Wm Fjord is doing quite well. I think after a recheck on Friday we will be given the green light to go home. Some stall improvements are in the works where Willi normally lives to make sure he is in the environment he needs. I did my first hoof care tonight almost be myself. He had to be twitched though, he is just sick of people messing with that foot. We should be off the SMZs in a few days as well. And I can take him out for a bite of grass every night as long as it is dry. He is loving that. Dr. Freer expects this to go for 3-4 months as we are now. I can live with that. He will be happier when he can go back to his run in though, for sure. > > Thanks again for all the encouragement and well wishes. > > Kathy in SC and Willi in NC, where the winter coat gets thicker each day > > Important FjordHorse List Links: > Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e > FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw > Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f

When I've had to use nasty tasting drugs w/Cass the applesauce has been the trick w/just a touch of yogurt. Last Dec. she was on 2 different kinds of antibiotics for a month for mastitis. This message is from: Karen McCarthy Hey Kathy, I know it must be immensely horrible for the poor guy to be chugging Bio-Sponge daily (yeah, it's like asking someone to pease eat & swallow a whole bowl of clay, yuk!) but I am sure he is doing it as a gastric preventative bc he's on the HD antibiotics and wants to keep his gut happy w/ and colitis freeso keep it up, it's a great "hind binder" (w/ apologies to Bob & Ray...and if you don't know who they are, then you must be under 50 ;~)) I have used it on 3 different horses and it certainly does the trick, a bit spendy though, but Good Luck and so glad things are going well! This message is from: Hi everyone. We had a good day. Willi got his hospital plate and walks quite well with it. He was bearing good weight on it. The infection had 3 types of bacteria in it all treatable with the inexpensive tablets 12 twice a day. Can't remember the name. I saw the new tissue in the hole in his foot today, very cool. The doctor was pleased with that. The bill was less than I thought. He was moved to the home of the vet who found our troubles, for 3 weeks of R&R. I am not sure what will happen after that. He settled in there very well, in a big roomy foaling stall. He has 3 buds in the barn, a nice window, and is next to the door. Quite the prime location. Tomorrow will be our first bandage change. It took 3 people today. We will be 2 tomorrow. But she has stocks. Well, I am off to bed. I have been sick as a dog all day, couldn't even do the transport with him this afternoon. This message is from: "M. Denmark" So sorry Willi has to have surgery. Glad the prognosis is good If you can find a book about clicker training I bet that would help both you and Willi get through his boring recovery time. Gives him something to learn and occupy his mind in a positive way for a little bit of the day. I have a desire to try it with mine. Seems most folks and their equines must love it. I'd also find one of the slow feeders for hay to help him not get frustrated. Keep us posted on how things are going. Hope these ideas might be of help. This message is from: Gail Russell You might consider Soft Ride boots if he needs cushioning. Here is the amazon link to what they offer in the way of Elastikon...so you can look at pricing. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=elastikon&x=0&y=0 I ordered a bunch of supplies for wrapping from MedVet International. Here is their link to their Elastikon search section. http://www.shopmedvet.com/category/s?keyword=elastikon I also got cotton padding...various things from them. Just be sure you know what you are ordering. I did buy some closeout stuff that was like vetwrap, and it did not stay on very well...was a cheaper version. Ask your vet if he/she recommends Vetricyn. People say it is wonderful for healing wounds. It is hyrdolized water...or something like that. Our barefoot trimmer trims for a diabetic wound care specialist who swears by it.
