Is it based on an optimal time? Are there ridden hazards? - - In the green horse jumping class...do you have to canter 100% of the time? We are still green at jumping and I don't think we'll manage that. But, it sounds like fun and I'd like to try. Hi Lynn, Hope you make it to the Woodstock shop, you won't regret it. It's a ton of fun and very beginner and gree nhorsefriendly.Ifyouarenotsureabout anything, just ask management or any of us "oldies". Cross country is usually judged one of two ways: one - high and low times are thrown out, times averaged and the one closest to the middle wins. Other way is the course is ridden ahead of time and and optimum time chosen. Riders closest to optimum time wins. Mel Gobel can give you the definitive answer - he'll be designing the course. I can tell you that what's looked for is a good trot pace, not overly fast, not real slow. Obstacles are crossing through water, ride through a covered bridge, sometimes past balloons or flags and zig zaging through driving obstacles. No jumping. There are spotters out on course with walkie talkies ready for helping if necessary. Green horse jumping can be cantered or trotted or a little of both. Of course a horse that cantered and got its lead changes would pin over one that trotted, given they both had a clear round. The jumps are inviting, the course simple, the crowd appreciative. Hope to see you there. Marcy Baer Briar Hill Farm http://www.briarhillfarm.com

Woodstock show questions
This message is from: "LYNN BINKOWSKI" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi, I'm psyching myself up for my first trip as a competitor to the Woodstock show. For the 4 years I've owned my fjord I've always told myself "next year I will bring my horse to the show" but of course I never have! Meanwhile, forces are working against me this year as well -- just found out I need an emergency root canal the week before the show, and I'm also getting married 3 weeks afterward! Stress? What stress?!?! Guess I'll take my inspiration from Lance Armstrong and fight through it all! Anyway, I do have a few questions I hope someone can help with... - How is the cross country - ridden class judged? Is it based on an optimal time? Are there ridden hazards? - In the green horse jumping class...do you have to canter 100% of the time? We are still green at jumping and I don't think we'll manage that. But, it sounds like fun and I'd like to try. Any help is appreciated to allay my fears! ALSO...my friend Wendy may come along for a day or two of the weekend to cheer me on. She is a certified equine massage therapist, so I thought I'd see whether anyone might be interested in treating their fjord to a massage. She does a great job and will be a presenter at Equine Affaire this year. -Lynn Binkowski Cromwell, CT

This message is from: "briar hill farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The tenative dates for the Woodstock Vermont Show are: Aug 23, 24, 25. I say tenative because if there isn't enough volunteer participation this year, the show will shut down. Some of the organizers have moved on. If you are not aware of this or the show dates and are a Fjord owner in the Northeast, I suggest you join the NFHA - North East Fjord Horse Assoc.- and get their monthly newsletter (Call us at 802 456 1680 to join and get more info). There is a meeting of the NFHA January 13 in White River Jct. VT. Below is the annoucement for the meeting: The NFHA wants you! Come plan next year with your fellow fjord friends! Our annual meeting is on January 13th from 11am-3pm Ramada Inn, White River Junction, VT at the intersection of 89 and 91. 802-295-3000. We will discuss the 2001 show, the show plans for 2002 and hold elections. For 2002 we will be putting together the show committee to plan and coordinate our show. The show date the GMHA has offered us is 8/23/02-8/25/02. Don't worry if you don't have experience or if you are new to the group or Fjords. We need help with pre-show planning, getting adds, preregistration, show program layout / printing and then all the tasks the weekend of the show. There's lots to do and it ain't rocket science! For the NFHA election we need a Treasurer (mostly just keeps the checkbook and accounts), a Secretary / membership person (does the mailings and keeps the membership list) and the President and Vice President or coPresident (keep everything together and moving forward). Come to the meeting with your ideas and energy. The NFHA Show has a long history and I think there is still a need for the organization and a Fjord Show in the northeast. We can't do it without all of your support! I know we all want this show. Let's pitch in and make it happen! If you can't make the meeting, give us a call with your ideas. This message is from: "Starfire Farm, LLC" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Congratulations, Marsha and Curt. Good work with your pair. How could you go wrong with Pat as navigator? Now, get to work on that four! You could include Solvar, why not? We have a white dun as an alternate. Could you imagine, two fjord four-in-hands, each with a white dun? Too funny. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi to all We took 4 horses to the show and a 14 yr old friend. What a great family oriented show and a super place to try out new capabilities. I encourage everyone within spittin' distance to support this show, which has been going on awhile. The managers did great this year (the Goebels didn't sit down once till Sunday night at the Pizza parlor). For brags, Caribo the wonder horse took his 14 year old new friend in her first driving class, first cross country and Solveig took her in her first dressage class. She had a blast. My pair (are you listening, Beth?) went clean in cones, best time cross country (6 min, 1 sec) with the best navigator ever, Pat Wolfe, and would have been 3d in the obstacle class with all those singles. I am very proud of them and it will be awhile before the pair euphoria wears off and I need to attach more Fjords! Our new guy, Solvar, just 2 weeks here from Norway, entered Green Horse pleasure driving and won first place, we are very pleased with his ! te! mperment and training, I think i t was a good decision to bring him home from Norway (3 year old white gelding). So, need more pair+ drivers on the East Coast (as I am not ready for the big time yet) and did we have a good time at Woodstock - yes siree. Marsha and Curt in VA with Caribo (Versatility champ for third time), Solveig, Tobyn and Solvar

Re: Woodstock SHow
This message is from: "Michele Bigelow" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi List, I am a new subscriber, and will be an intermittent contributor. My Husband and I own 2 Fjords, Sigrid and Stovar, but we are currently in the process of selling Sigrid to a friend who has been riding and using her for the past year. My friend and I were at the Woodstock Show, and she did quite well, 2 championships and a reserve championship with Sigrid. I was generally pleased with Stovar's performance, since he is only 4, and it was his first overnight experience. We showed in Western tack, unusual for Woodstock, but based on the feedback from others, I think we will start seeing more of it. My comments on the draft, I enjoyed the draft on Saturday - we usually don't stay to do it in Sundays. It was fun, and the group that participated had a few good laughs. I really liked the new class too! My friend is interested in the Dressage postings, as we had to leave before they finished and were pinned. Thanks! Michele

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Julia and Mike, Thank you alot for your comments on Woodstock. Sorry that I didn't meet you. We were guest of Alan's sister in Norwich and didn't know how much we would miss by not going to the dinner on saturday night. We sat with the Merrimans during the show sat. and sun. and heard alot about the auction and admired her table and wished we had been there! Yes, the show moved slowly with just one horse in the "ring" in the beginning and in the log pull event. But we certainly enjoyed meeting people and seeing the horses! Thanks again, Lois Merrill

This message is from: Julia Will <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello list ~ Comments about the Woodstock showThe weather was grand, the scenery beautiful, as always, and the show dragged a bit due to come changes in scheduling. The halter classes were modified to a "european" format, wherein horses were brought into the ring one at a time and walked and trotted around a triangle formation in front of the judge, then sent out of the ring. I felt the triangle was too small to allow for a horse to really trot out, and I missed seeing all the horses in each class in the ring at one time. It also took a lot more time to judge the horses in this manner. A new draft class was added, sort of a trail obstacle course pulling a log. It was very challenging, but very time consuming. While I appreciate having the draft division receive more attention, (it was held on Saturday instead of Sunday, and started out in the white ring, but moved to the dust bowl when it ran so long) it made Saturday run well into the dinner hour before we were finished showing. We almost missed the banquet! We were sorry to find no cross country classes this year, as that has been a favorite "fun" thing to do. There were some other new "fun" classes, such as egg and spoon race and sit-a-ten, which everyone enjoyed. There was a nice turnout of young people riding and this show offers a great spread of divisions for every level of skill, beginner through advanced. The costume class had more entries than usual and was very entertaining! The "bride" was my favorite...horse and rider in white lace, veils and all. There was some unfortunate confusion pinning some of the Championship divisions...in dressage the lowest scores were pinned as the winners until someone questioned it. Maybe someone who knows could post the total number of horses entered? How about class results? Lindsay...who has those? Could they be posted on the NFHR web site? Some of us don't yet have the whole story on who won what. Since there are so few Fjord shows, I think the results are important information to have available, and in the past it has sometimes been months before the results were seen in the Herald.
